    I got these last March as my first set outside of prismas and I hated them at first, but I recently gave them another go now that I have more experience. Now I love these pencils! Very different but I enjoy how they layer over the prismas. I also love how well they keep a point. I would recommend these for new colorists who want to try an oily based pencil.

      Yea sometimes you need to revisit a pencil and see if it's changed for you

      That's me too, I got FC polychromos and hated them at first, I see why I hated them, but I'm finding that happens a lot, love-hate relationship.Swatching is not the only way a colored pencil should be judged, cause u can get it wrong. So far, the caran d' ache is the best of the ones I have tried. I do not like Castle Arts, I can't layer or anything, they were my first set. I might feel differently about CA, who knows.

    I love my SJ and have found they blend very well with other brands - Prisma, Brutfuner Sq, Black Widow, Castle Arts etc. The colors are fantastic and I love the thickness of them. I wish they would come out with a bigger or companion set.

      I have been wishing for that as well -- would love more pinks, lavenders, reds, oranges, & browns -- I feel like the blues and greens are well covered, but especially red feels like it could use 2-3 more pencils to help expand the ranges.

    I wish they’d come down in price here. They still cost much more than I’m willing to pay for a budget pencil. I like the idea of them, especially for times when I don’t want to have to choose a colour combo. Ah well, I’ll keep my eye on them

    • @ColorfullyOptimistic

    My first experience, I really did not like them. But I was used to oil leaning pencils to being harder and waxier pencils to being softer. Once I started using them more, I really like them and I agree about the greys and pinks. Though, I am always all about more purples too. LOL!

    • @ColorfullyOptimistic
      @ColorfullyOptimistic  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, they are different if you are used to say something like Polys, but once you get a feel for them they are quite nice.

    Very good explanation/true review of these pencils Kori. I know everyone has to come to their own conclusions about each brand of pencil. What I like is the blending combos. I will put them on my wish list for now. Thanks so much! Have a great weekend🙋🐶🧡🎃

    I have to admit, ive never exactly been interested in getting the star joy gold mainly because there are no open stock available (they do seem like an excellent budget set Though). However, I always watch your pencil reviews and comparisons- they really are incredible and without a doubt the best pencils reviews. You are possibly one of a very few who REALLY thoroughly tries the pencil for an extended time to get a good feel of them and do comprehensive on screen tests like this. Its really unbelievably helpful for so many people. And they are enjoyable to watch too. Thank you so incredibly much

    • @ColorfullyOptimistic
      @ColorfullyOptimistic  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you. Yes, they aren’t open stock, but with a budget set that’s the trade off. You’re not getting artist quality here, so you aren’t going to have open stock opportunities or even lightfast testing, but you have a good little pencil to use here and there for sure.

    I like my star joy gold. I prefer these over Crayola. Just to mention, I also like the colour brand over Crayola. I think both of the sets I mentioned are worth ther money for a non professional.

    Intriguing! SJ 72 set USED to be a white-labelled Deli set. But now the tin and pencil labelling is completely different, and the pencils also look different. Might be worth checking out! And yes I followed Lori through this and helped name colours...

    You do such great reviews. I have these and like them for when I just want to color, not come up with a color scheme or blends. They are great when you don’t want to think. And I also like them on Amazon paper.

    These are unfortunately almost $80CAD on Canadian Amazon which is pretty high for a budget set. I do like the fact that they come with tri-blends already sorted, though I agree with you that the light to dark range on those is rather low, and I like more contrast in my shadows too.

    I got this set for my mom who is new to adult coloring. I agree there's new stuff to learn from them. After playing around with the muted pastels for a whole afternoon, I'm getting more and more tempted to get a set for me.

    Thank you for this timely review! I am getting my elementary-school aged granddaughter a nre set of colored pencils for her birthday (she is very much the little artist), and I was undecided about which set. She isn't responsible enough for something like my Prismas or Polys, but she is ready for something a little more than Crayolas. This set sounds perfect, especially with the way the colors are arranged.

  • @Allison_Troy

    My cat's loved the piece of foam in the top of the box -- they stole that week 1. I use the shades I consider skin tones in this box quite a bit for portraits -- I get blends I like for them. I also like using them for backgrounds -- if there is a big giant sky or some background I don't want to use Prisma or Black Widow for -- I find them super-useful and they work well with Prisma and Black Widow. I also get better results with them on heavier toothier cardstock papers. Also love that blues are less powdery and dense than some of the vibrant blues in the Prisma sets. I did completely reorder the pencils in the tin the first weekend tho to meet my needs. My eye needs them in color groups. I did the same with my Prisma box -- and the Black Widows -- although did not mix them between tins in BW -- but within the tins they're in color groups. And don't miss the white in SJG. I use either Prisma or white charcoal.

    • @ColorfullyOptimistic
      @ColorfullyOptimistic  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Prisma white is by far my fav.

    • @Allison_Troy
      @Allison_Troy ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ColorfullyOptimistic I'm having fun with the white charcoal but it feels like "An Event" when I break thatout and that gets exhausting fast. If I have to work up to use something (mostly just using the tan and beige cardstock paper it looks best on) then it's "fun factor" is gone.

    I bought these when they first came out and got a very poor quality set which I did return. However I wanted to try them after their rushed production issues were solved. So I ordered another set months later, and I like them, especially with Clare’s color chart.

    I really think the reason why I won't use these, is the size of the pencil, I just thought of it. First, they come in a beautiful tin experience, then u open them and see the bright colors, color chart, then wham, u pick one up and it's thin. sooo, I've got a smile on one side and a wtheck on the other. I'm a very visual, feely type person!! lol

    I so dislike when the statement "of getting supplies is as easy as going somewhere (like Blick or Micheals)" like this is an option for everyone. This is not an option for many deep rural people! This is not a not a negative comment, just stating the truth. Even trying to purchase online can be a road block.

      I understand your frustration, but at the same time that wasn't really the point of this video at all, and a simple comment seems to be taken way out of context and now that's all we're focusing on here. So, I apologize if the comment enraged you, but again, it wasn't me assuming it was an opinion for everyone.

       @ColorfullyOptimistic From my end, it wasn't a criticism, just a simple statement of fact. You do a great job. It's just not so easy for some people to walk into a shop they don't have locally. That's it.
