This is December 2024 & this immortal, iconic, immensely soul touching & tearful song : CANDLE IN THE WIND by legendary ELTON JOHN continues to be exceedingly emotional, exceptionally heart touching, enormously exclusive and elegant. This will go down as the best ever memorial song for a great & noble lady, PRINCESS DIANA. ELTON JOHN's singing is singularly sentimental, sad, soulful, spellbinding, superb, sincere, sweet & simply spectacular. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
How Elton managed to sing that song, about his good friend, with totally re-written lyrics of an original song he has performed a thousand times before, without autocue or sheet written lyrics, self-accompanied and live with perhaps billions of people around the world watching is totally remarkable! A faultless performance by an absolute living legend of a musician!
I agree. What’s more, this live version sounded so much better than the re-recorded version too. Most likely due to acoustics of the venue, as well as the raw emotion during this specific performance.
Professionalism. Elton himself said that in an interview, he was asked about that and he knew what his purpose was and so he went out there and did it. Very difficult indeed for him.
If I remember from quotes and anecdotal shit, he basically said he disassociated his self and treated it like a performance. Which, I guess it was. It was showing Di what she meant to everyone. His performance was acting like he wasn't crying.
I used to think that until the events of last year, and this happened earlier this year... th-cam.com/video/SFzF0u6hgvs/w-d-xo.html (For those of you who don't want to click without knowing, Per Gessle performing "It Must Have Been Love" in tribute to the death of Marie Fredriksson. Together, they formed the Swedish pop sensation Roxette, more popular abroad then in the States, but I loved them more than any other group i likely ever will)
Roy Goode ,not a childish opinion....a very perceptive opinion for a child. I’m 51, still think this is the best live version of any song. This holds special memories for me......the day of the funeral was the day I married my husband.......22 years ago this year.
To give a live performance like this, play it flawlessly, and sing without breaking down - and in front of perhaps half the world watching is incredible. Elton is one of the best in the music industry ever in my opinion - and liked by everyone.
I think going through a lot of the personal issues and drug/alcohol addiction when he was young, that many pop stars deal with, then coming through clean and sober with his health, helped him become a better person. So many pop/rock stars are ego maniacs with no humility, and destroy themselves beyond the point of return. Elton weathered that storm and came through a wonderful human being.
Fun fact: Elton John has stated that unless he gets the blessing from Diana's sons, he will never perform this version again, though he still plays the Marilyn Monroe version in concert.
You are 99% correct. In the immediate aftermath of her death (maybe one month) he did perform it on Top of the pops. i remember distinctly. he was wearing a very gay top hat. but the rest of what u said is true
@She Wolf I don't think I'd say that he's one of the most underrated artists. He still has the record for highest selling single of all time (Which, coincidentally, is this song.), and had, if memory serves, a single in the top 100 for 40+ years. No other singer has done that.
This is the second most successful recording of all time (only behind White Christmas which had a 55 year head start). Despite that it has only been performed by Elton John on three occasions: the funeral rehearsal, the funeral, and the recording session. He has said he will never perform it for a 4th time unless explicitly asked by Diana’s sons. That is character, to have the most successful song of any living person and not perform it out of respect for your friend and her family. How many artists would do the same? Bravo Sir Elton!
@miltonramos9698 let me correct you then because I suck. I belive you meant "those concerts are unforgettable". Concert multiple is concerts, when you can't forget something it is unforgettable
@@ljlj5703 listen to a podcast called “you’re wrong about” they have a 5 part series about Diana and the last one they basically put all conspiracy theories to bed.
25 years ago we lost Diana. Now it is time to bid farewell to Queen Elizabeth. I am awed how Elton ever could perform that song so beautifully. Must have been an emotional rollercoaster.
Yes, today very much has that same feel. No other day in recent times has felt the same. The same week that Diana died, Mother Teresa did also. That made things even sadder
If Diana was alive today, I was ill back in February and I could have met her. But she wouldn’t have known that I’m just loved as her; everyone in Wales says I’m a great Queen to them and I can’t wait for my birthday
How could you possibly know how old I am? Try not to be such an presumptuous blowhard before making a comment: you'll look back and be less embarrassed. I stand by my comment. This is overrated dreck deifying a halfwit Sloan ranger. I'm old enough to recall watching the baffling grief fest that accompanied this event. It was ridiculous then and it's even more so now. You've contributed nothing.
I remember coming downstairs the day she died... I walked in the living room and the floor was covered with every single newspaper available to buy and my mum just said, "she's dead" - and she'd been sobbing, reading every single paper. Still makes me feel emotional thinking about it - I was only 11! This compassion coming from a woman who was born with absolutely nothing. Just goes to show how much the country loved Princess Diana, rich or poor.
SmithyD86 Same! Still remember being a similar age and my mum running into my room opening my curtains saying “she died she died”. I went downstairs and on the tv it was just breaking news on all channels.
@@andym2345 I can't recall which interview it was, Andy, but I know he did quite a few. One with 20/20, one with Oprah, one with 60 Minutes etc. I remember him saying that he also had to read a teleprompter because he was afraid he's slip and sing the words of Candle In The Wind.
@@bigjohn6475 I think not singing Candle In The Wind would have been the hardest part for me. Replacing a song like that you've sung a million times with a song with words written a few days before, but to the exact same music. I can't imagine being able to do that.
No man in history has been under as much pressure than Elton at that moment. And he gave us this wonderful performance,, singin to one of his best friends,, Diana. Abselutely beautyful❤❤❤
yeah, like the guys whole got the medal of honor for combat action have not been under such pressure. They were just risking their life under enemy fire to save their wounded comrades, much less pressure than Elton John was under.
This is absolutely beautiful. I was very young when Princess Diana passed away but watching this makes me feel like I was there. The emotion and atmosphere Elton creates with this song is just incredible.
I was also very young. My mum used to listen to the radio throughout the night...and I remember hearing in the early hours that she'd been in an accident...and it wasn't until I woke up in the morning that, despite being so young, I realised the devastating impact of her death. Such a huge loss!

I can’t believe this will be my 6th year running the service of Remembrance and I’ll be gutted if I can’t go
Just incredible that this song has only been performed three times. Rehearsal, in the studio and at the funeral. This has to be one of the most amazing live performances ever.
Erm, he said that after the funeral, he would only ever play it again if “her boys” asked her to. At the “concert for Diana” when they were seen talking with him, i thought “oh, they are asking him to play the song,” but no, he played something else. I was surprised and slightly disappointed at the same time, but i respect it’s their decision, not mine.
Siempre dijo que nunca la tocará en vivo para que la gente que quiera tener el CD de la canción tenga que pagar, en su momento, 10 libras esterlinas, y ese dinero se usó para las obras de beneficio que la princesa Diana llevaba adelante.
@@alonewithoutyoubymyside3936 I did a tribute to the Queen at Remembrance last week and I’ll never do it again because it distressed me. I even made my beloved Woody.EXE cry and he hugged me the whole time
I can’t hear this song without choking up. That must have been the hardest thing for Elton to do. And the fact that only one month earlier he grieved the death of Versace. He held himself perfectly and honoured Diana with absolute dignity and respect.
It was a horrible song to use it was written about Marilyn Monroe a slut whore. He edited and uses it for Prince Diana is disgusting The proper and classy thing to do is write a completely different song that's the stupidity of a homosexual! And even worse you thinking it's beautiful it was in very bad taste perhaps you don't know the difference.
The memory of her, if it persists, will hold far less historic momentum than that of Elizabeth I or Mary Queen of Scots, but she might be remembered for a couple of centuries, because history books favour royal families more than the common people.
Tearful eyes especially now if you are a lot more awake than you were 20 yrs ago. All I can think now from the start of this video is "these people are sick"! Just thinking how evil these people really are. Just think how these people (the elites) planned her death. Do you really think the Queen really wanted Diana around? If you are confused on that, there are plenty of research videos right here on YT. Again, my only answer to this now is THESE PEOPLE ARE SICK!

Danielle Dufresne yes exactly, so many people in my circle of friends all know about this and the evil power hungry Royal family. They don’t even need to have their assets valued. So in truth they make the rich people we know like Bill Gates look like a beggar. Same with the Rothschild family their true wealth is in the many Trillions and they built their entire fortune on deception, manipulation and blood. Elton knows this but can’t speak out and it’s hard to blame him. Thanks to the internet and different unbiased platforms people are indeed awake to all these horrible atrocities. The elites really trying to destroy countries identity. If you want to honour your countries values you are labeled a racist. Stay strong England, sending love from Australia
She wasn't just England's Princess she was truly as they say The People's Princess. My favorite lines of the song are "And you whispered to those in pain now you belong to heaven and the stars spell out your name." and also the line "We'll miss the wings of your compassion more than you'll ever know."
For some reason, this is the song I come to for comfort in dealing with depression, or grief. This was done very, very, very well. Salute to Elton and his long-term musical collaborator Bernie Taupin was blessing our lives with this masterpiece.
I was teenager in CA with zero care about the British royal family, but I’ll never forget where I was when I heard that Princess Diana died. Talk about the entire world mourning. She was so loved from the public. Where there was so much dislike for the royal family, Diana was seen as the peoples princess. An average person thrown into a world or royalty and responsibility. She rose to the occasion….In 8th grade my teacher showed Diana’s wedding to Prince Charles to my class and went into great detail about the wedding. I remember her mentioning that there were tiny embroidered bees sewn into her wedding dress because Diana loved bees. The world mourned for her. The entire world.

Goodbye England's rose. May you ever grow in our hearts. You were the grace that placed itself where lives were torn apart. You called out to our country, and you whispered to those in pain. Now you belong to heaven, and the stars spell out your name. And it seems to me you lived your life like a candle in the wind, never fading with the sunset when the rain set in. And your footsteps will always fall here, along England's greenest hills; Your candle's burned out long before your legend ever will. Loveliness we've lost, these empty days without your smile. This torch we'll always carry for our nation's golden child. And even though we try, the truth brings us to tears; All our words cannot express the joy you brought us through the years. Goodbye England's rose, from a country lost without your soul, Who'll miss the wings of your compassion more than you'll ever know. Sung so memorably by her friend, Elton John

Perfectly delivered. No words to describe how moving that performance was. How he managed to stay composed, play that piano perfectly, and remember words to the revised version without accidentally singing the original version, you can see his emotion in his eyes, beautiful performance.

i thought the funeral was on tv on Sunday later in September 1997 like 21st or 28th, cant believe it was 6th September on Saturday talk about quick arrangements, i was 10 years old and watched it in full i thought all day, did they show the whole funeral again on repeat on Sunday morning all day, it was emotional, maybe i got mixed up on the day and time or was i living in a parallel universe.
@Christopher Aldrich I'm From UK it really odd for me as i though Candle in the Wind 1997 come out before funeral, but i think i must be misleaded or mistaking judging by the online story's, i did watch the funeral back in 1997, but honestly thought it was late September not the start of September on Sunday, also that was quick setup from Sunday 31st August to Saturday 6th for all the preparations, what a job and everyone acting really fast for the service.
@Christopher Aldrich do you agree, did you thought it was a another date they shown the funeral then, because i thought it was a few weeks after she sadly died, it took place, or did they simply repeat the full funeral again on TV in UK on Sunday after.
This was the funeral of the century. The amount of people outside crying was outstanding. I was a kid and still remember like it was today! RIP queen of hearts
No, check out the funeral of Yugoslavian president Tito, which was the biggest funeral in history. To say last goodbye came over 20 presidents, 34 presidents of parliament, 3 kings, 5 princes, many foreign ministers and more than milion people on the streets.
dite6s9mora dite6s9mora Diana's funeral was watched by 2.5 Billion people that's based on Google you can look it up, but it's useless even if the other has more people in funeral they are dead and we are next. Check out Churchill's funeral as well. A few details: Sir Winston Churchill died on 24 January 1965, aged 90. His was the first state funeral for a non-royal family member since Lord Carson in 1935, and as of 2021 it remains the most recent state funeral in the United Kingdom. The official funeral lasted for four days. Planning for the funeral, known as Operation Hope Not, began 12 years before Churchill's death. Attended by representatives from 120 countries, 6,000 people, and unusually by the Queen, more than 1,000 police and security personnel, involving nine military bands, 18 military battalions, 16 Royal Air Force English Electric Lightning fighter jets, a special boat MV Havengore and a train hauled by Winston Churchill, homage paid by 321,360 people, and witnessed by over 350 million people, it was the largest state funeral in history. The Queen broke certain royal protocols at Churchill's funeral. Firstly, it was a common royal etiquette for the monarch to not attend funeral service outside of the royal family. Secondly, she not only attended the service but was among the first officials to arrive at St Paul's, making her presence even before the coffin and Churchill family arrived. It is a royal custom in any event that the monarch is always the last to arrive. Additionally, it is a royal convention that the monarch is also the first to exit or end an ongoing event. As the funeral service was over, the Queen followed the Churchill family out of the cathedral. To these unusual deeds by the Queen, Nicholas Soames commented: "It is absolutely exceptional if not unique for the Queen to grant precedence to anyone. For her to arrive before the coffin and before my grandfather was a beautiful and very touching gesture. Churchill's funeral was the largest gathering of world leaders during the 1960s-and, at that time, in history. Representatives from 112 countries and many organisations attended, including 5 kings, 2 queens, 1 emperor, 1 grand duke, 2 queen consorts, 15 presidents, 14 prime ministers and 10 former leaders. The only notable absentee was Lyndon B. Johnson, President of the United States, who was ill at the time. The official representative of the United States was Earl Warren, Chief Justice of the United States. ... China was the only country not to send representatives to the funeral. The Observer reported on 31 January, saying, "This was the last time that London would be the capital of the world. This was an act of mourning for the imperial past. This marked the final act in Britain's greatness... It was a triumph. It was a celebration of a great thing that we did in the past."[
We are a stoic nation, even more so back then. To see men in the audience crying just shows how heart breaking this was. I remember coming down that morning for school to find my mum sobbing in our living room watching the news. I was young but I knew how important it was that Diana had died. This performance still brings me to tears, especially the crowd stood outside in silence and Elton singing "your footsteps will always fall here along England's greenest hills". Professionalism. Elton himself said that in an interview, he was asked about that and he knew what his purpose was and so he went out there and did it. Very difficult indeed for him.

To give a live performance like this, play it flawlessly, and sing without breaking down - and in front of perhaps half the world watching is incredible. Elton is one of the best in the music industry ever in my opinion - and liked by everyone.
I agree with you 100%!!!
💯
I think going through a lot of the personal issues and drug/alcohol addiction when he was young, that many pop stars deal with, then coming through clean and sober with his health, helped him become a better person. So many pop/rock stars are ego maniacs with no humility, and destroy themselves beyond the point of return. Elton weathered that storm and came through a wonderful human being.
In my opinion he is at least at the top 5 of the greatest in music history of mankind ever.
For me, the very best musician
Now her two sons are older than she was when she lost her life. What could have been we will never know. What an enormous loss to the world.
Fun fact: Elton John has stated that unless he gets the blessing from Diana's sons, he will never perform this version again, though he still plays the Marilyn Monroe version in concert.

Why is it outstanding to cry in public over someone you never met and never knew? Serious question.
@@dite6s9mora73 it's not necessary to compare the funerals. Long live the Marshall and the queen of hearts
I love England, I'd never want to live anywhere else, and Diana is part of our culture and always will be, what a loss of a truly beautiful woman - inside and out ❤

You can tell he wanted to cry but he kept his composure. Heartbreaking, yet beautiful rendition. Hard to believe she's been gone for 25 years now.
I remember this like it was yesterday it was the first time I cried about the death of someone. I was only a little kid 😥

How the hell did he sing this without breaking down in tears?
Why are tears necessary? Grief is a complex psychological process, of which tears are only a small part.
You can kinda see he’s trying not to cry

I have always wondered that too. I mean, I started crying when this started playing. And he knew her in person, they were close friends. I always admired his composure, was that me, I would be singing through tears.

I don't know why I needed to hear this today. Maybe because in the state of chaos that the world is currently in, we desperately need our People's Princess to be here to make things okay again. The woman was timeless, and her legend will live in our hearts and minds for generations. Thank you, Elton. This was absolutely...phenomenal. It was truly the perfect tribute to the Princess that was loved around the world, and will be for many years to come. Goodbye England's rose
May you ever grow in our hearts
You were the grace that placed itself
Where lives were torn apart
You called out to our country
And you whispered to those in pain
Now you belong to heaven
And the stars spell out your name
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset when the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England's greenest hills
Your candle's burned out long before
Your legend ever will
Loveliness we've lost
These empty days without your smile
This torch we'll always carry
For our nation's golden child
And even though we try
The truth brings us to tears
All our words cannot express
The joy you brought us through the years

Millions of other women meet the description you have given here, yet people do not wail in the streets when they die. Don't you think it is strange to wail over a woman you never met? Obscene, even?
She was also a damaged soul she was not perfect no one is. We need to remember she was a human with all the faults that come with that.

I was in the crowd by St Paul's cathedral on her wedding day and saw her arriving in her carriage. My strongest memory of her funeral was those poor little boys walking behind her coffin and a wreath of white roses saying "Mummy". It was a brutal thing to make them walk so far like that.
Sweet memories never fade.

August 31st.. such a sad day 😭😭
Why were ppl obsessed with princess diana?
This song brings me to tears. I was probably Harry’s age at the time she died. She is a genuine soul her kindness and compassion for others was beautiful the royal family did not appreciate her or take care of her. I’m glad regular people knew how amazing she was and gave her so much love everywhere she went.
Regular people did not know her personally at all. What you call "love" was just blind adulation based on her being glamorous. The worship of Diana actually cheapened real emotion. Her sudden, preventable death was a tragedy for her family only, and this public spectacle, with people wailing in the streets over a woman they never met, was in poor taste.
@@Musicienne-DAB1995 you don’t have to know somebody personally in order to feel compassion to them and their family. You can admire, love and adore people you’ve never met simply because of their deeds and words. Diana was a remarkable person and deserved adoration. Get off your high horse and stop gatekeeping people’s emotions.
