i know Im randomly asking but does anyone know of a way to log back into an Instagram account?? I somehow lost the password. I love any tricks you can give me.
@Trent Crosby I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and im in the hacking process now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
It's amazing to hear how well this sounds with just one microphone and a free DAW. It really shows that nowadays, there are no excuses to get your creativity out there.
Almost every comment here: "great video but the religiousness is annoying" Cmon guys. He just does what he loves and we are judging him for his beliefs rather than appreciating the help he's given us by teaching how to record our own songs and do what we love.
When I saw your first video yesterday (The 5 things you need for a home studio) I thought to myself: "He must be a born again christian, he speaks like one". After watching this video, I know it. I'm a christian singer songwriter from Mexico, starting to build my home studio and I want you to know that your videos are not only very practical but very inspiring too. Awesome life advice on the ones with the 1st rule of home recording. God bless you a lot
I love this song! It sounds so amazing, fresh, new, clean. true, the drums sounds roomy and the snare isn't loud enough but with only one mic! Your a master at this stuff! This is genuine christian rock! Thanks for doing this.
A perfect example of "it's not about having the best, it's about knowing how to use what you have." This is awesome, Graham. A HUGE inspiration to us all!
GREAT video, its awesome how you show you can actually record a whole song with acceptable quality with just around 200 dollars, and your computer, its realy unbelievable, only 200 dollars dude, and it sounds just fine, but seriously, sounds fine, any band would love to have that simple recording. Then what if you spent 400 dollars? 800 dollars? 2000 dollars? Well spent.
Great video as always. I admire your efforts to convince people that they should focus more on music and on using what they already have as best as they can, congratulations
This video came out right around the time I started recording my own material. I come back here every once in a while and I've shown it to many of my musician friends. Every now and then, I need to be reminded that there's value in keeping things simple.
Worship music isn't for me, but I can certainly appreciate your videos. Thanks Graham for posting and showing how easy it can be to record and for your tutorials.
My goodness you are a talented man. This is so sick! Love the song as well. I was absolutely astonished by how well one mic could pick up that entire kit so well. I would love to have seen a more in-depth look on how you mixed it
Great channel. I was looking around TH-cam for something like this to help out a friend who's going to be recording his Praise & Worship songs from home soon which I'll be playing drums for, and found you. I didn't even think you were a Christian until I heard this song. Praise Jesus, what a blessing, keep doing what you're doing for His glory.
It's great to hear these drums in with an entire mix. Many of the minimum drum micing turotials on the tube show how to to set up the mics, but not the recorded sound mixed in with other instruments. Excellent!
you're right, but recording for drummers is always a pain in the ass... they need to be metronome precise, 100%, all the time. they're slave of the click in the earphones. try to pley relaxed if you have a machine precise click in the ears forcing you to be a machine not a human ;-)
Dude, that was seriously the coolest thing I've ever seen. In one shot, you showed your serious talent for recording, music, and your faith. Bravo kind sir. I've got your bandcamp saved in my favorites.
Ironic how this sound and equipment would've been cutting edge back in the day, yet, people dismiss it today and want old gear because this is "limited". Who understands mankind? Great job, Graham! God bless you!
I agree, that was fantastic as well as encouraging! I'd love to see more challenge videos with the result being an original or cover. It could be a cool little series!
very cool. im learning to breaks some bad habits from your other videos. its hilarious that you are dealing with a lot of the same things i have, which drove me to take a break from it for a while. so, im going to start fresh with limitations and see how this goes. thanks for making these vids. have an awesome day bud!
Good job fellas. I don't care whether graham sings about jesus, buddha, allah, or plugs a hand weaving website, i'll leave that aside and take the gr8 info he delivers around recording. Love it!
Simply put, if watchers don't like the theme of the music, they can go elsewhere for recording tutorials. I firmly believe that if Graham wants to demonstrate his production chops using Christian music that is his right. The whole purpose of viewers coming together to watch these videos is because we love and have a passion for recording music. It does not matter if we are into Jazz, rock, pop, heavy metal or whether we are Jews or gentiles, music is music. Once again, great video Graham!!
Excellent sound. I have to say you played and sang everything really great. But it didn't hurt having a drummer who knows how to play in these situations. Thanks to both of you for all of your help.
Graham, stay true. Stay blessed. Am I religious, no. Do I believe in God, yes. And I pray to him every night. You are beyond kind for sharing your knowledge with people. I've watched numerous videos that you've created and they've helped me achieve things in my home studio exponentially. For this I thank you. You are obviously moved by a higher power and it's allowing you to enjoy a rich, fulfilling life. How many of us can say that. Peace & Thanks to you for what you do. God Bless.
Great example graham. You vids have helped me massively on improving the way my home recordings sounds, using less plugins and faster. Great work, please keep the vids coming.
Great demo, I love the fact you can hear a good balance of the drum kit with one Mike , who would have thought .! Great tips too on you other videos Thanks graham
Took me over half the song to realize he was singing about Jesus, I was so busy looking at the mic positioning I wasn't really paying attention to the lyrics lol
Graham you are simply outstanding teacher. I have learnt so much from your chanel and started getting result applying your technics though my DAW is cubase.
Great work man, This is a perfect example of how good you can be with knowledge instead of cash. I've seen ALOT of people with serious gear and they suck, really really bad......
Glad you demonstrated that. We'd use 3-4 mics for rough practice R2R recordings but still sounded good, albeit ages ago. BTW, your tune has a nice beat.
I copied the mic position you used for the drums in this vídeo, put another one in the bass drum and worked great. Recording na EP with this configuration.
u just saved me a whole lot of money.i used to play the drums yrs ago but been using Addictive Drums program.i wanted to try playin drums over my music again as aproject.how to mic it up was always aproblem..u got a great sound.well done and thank you
I was looking how to get some good recordings without having a big studio. It was great... you are doing an amazing job, this shows that everyone can get good recordings without spend too much money. Thanks a lot man!!!
Ok so here's what I think first I think this came out great considering the budget you had it's pretty good improvising and it's good for anyone who just wants to get there stuff out there...but The problem with recording with one mic, especially the drums, is that you now can only pan the drums to one location of the speaker which means that all the instruments are playing in the same space, I know this video is an "improv" for people with small budgets but its still not good if you want your song to sound more full because with more mics you now can pan each instrument to it's desired location depending on it's set up...(mixing tip) So my advice to people wondering, is get your band together and save up money to buy a good audio interface and as many mic's as you're gonna need, it doesn't need to cost much as you can see from watching this video you can get a great sound using a hundred dollar mic, so find ways to improvise! ya know? and you don't have to record each part one at a time, you can all get together and record the traditional way, when you have more mics Anyway it still sounds good!
Hi graham. Love this vid. This is very simular to the gear im using.. I dont have space for a drum kit so I use a sequencer, but apart from that its the same. Its encouraging to see whats possible with this kind of gear. Thank you for the inspiration
that was great showing the mic placement for a single drum kit mic. makes me think of a creative way to do that + a further away drum mic A/B stereo-pair in phase to capture a phat room sound. Mmmm THANKS!
I rarely comment on videos, but you've done an excellent job with this. It's important to note the drums, which are hard to record..especially with one mic, sound great. Also note that it's a minimal kit, played thoughtfully, and not overplayed. That's important for any tune, but almost necessary when using few mics.
I just discoverd your channel...five things you need for a home studio I already love your efforts man...love the fact that u showing the world about Jesus our only king.God bless you
Hey, Graham. First of all a BIG THANKS for providing us with such a high quality collection of materials. We are writing the Spanish script of this video in our facebook group “Música Cristiana Independiente”, unfortunately I can’t post the link here. As a FB group we foster cooperation among Christian musicians here in South America. All are welcome. Peace and Blessings Pablo.
Wow, sounds way better than I expected. If I was going to get nit-picky, I would boost the bass frequencies by quite a bit on the drum (kick region) and the bass guitar more forward as well. Couldn't even really hear the bass guitar. It's a bit thin in the bottom but overall sounds great. This reminds me of the good old days of being a beginner and a songwriter, just like you said. There is so much joy in it, and it's good not to get too discouraged about money and gear.
Yes, anyone can but often they don't and I believe that is what the author is pointing out - that lack of gear is a rut in which many people get stuck and it prevents them from making and recording music. Good job!
LMFAO. did 3:05 make anyone else laugh the way that drummer hit the ride?? the way he leaned into it was hilarious.. I mean, I could imagine he does that so it's easier to get back to the hi-hat.. it just looked funny xDDD ..
i love your filosophy; being on a budget dosent means you can make great work. I supose its all matter of dedication, and taking things seriouslly. THANKS, ITS WAS VERY, VERY, HELPFULL
This is what it's all about really, making great music with what you have, and doing a damn fine job of it in the process... Just a really impressive piece of work, sounds fantastic and to do it with "budget" gear just shows it's not what you have so much as it is how you use it...Inspirational.
I always find myself watching this video and it proves I have no excuse for not recording and getting a great result, time to get a couple friends in and set up that mic!
Great job. Never seen the "over the shoulder" drum mic placement, but it seemed to work well. Excellent post. Thanks. It shouldn't be the gear that limits us now-a-days, only the creative energy and talent. : )
Fantastic video! The productions of your videos have gotten so good! I used to say all the time...."if you cant record an entire song using a single SM57 then you need to re-think what your doing" You just made my point with a different mic! Great job
At 1st, I thought you meant recording the whole band with 1 mic, with the band playing real time; now I get it- 1 instrument at a time. Your mix sounds great! Esp the drums. Maybe you could share how you processed the drum audio track. Nice job!
Very cool! Thanks for sharing this. I love how you put this video together, with the step by step, easy to follow, demonstrations in step with directions! Especially the various mic placements!! That's the stuff I've read or heard before, but I'm always unclear and confused when it comes down to mic placement. I also love how you recorded the bass direct! You'd laugh if you could see all the different ways I've tried recording bass!! My jaw dropped when I seen, "bass, plug in direct."!! Hmmm, the only method I haven't tried.. Lol. Very nice. Thanks again!
There is a "producer secret weapon" called a PZM, but specifically, the Radioshack discontinued PZM. While everyone is saying to buy expensive ribbon mics and all that shit, a very smart friend and producer said "buy this $15 Radioshack mic" off eBay. We have used that mic more than any other. From tracking each instrument to all live, the cheap discontinued PZM(Radioshack brand) has allowed us to easily plug in, record a verse and chorus, then send off to someone we're working with, as well as, make full demos and b-sides to release. It is an amazing microphone. HIGHLY recommended for "one-mic recordings". People, have started to catch on to this "secret weapon" of a mic and the price on eBay has been as high as $70-$125, since earlier this year.
Bro, what a great video. You know, I've always dreamed of being able to record my music but the budget is always tight. To pay for a professional studio is not something you do a lot these days. And yet, you really showed me how to stop excuses and make music! I'm loving the fact you share your faith with these videos. Thank you for your hard work. Susbscribed from now on! Keep it up!
i respect you sir. you are such a genius... i have through your radio ready guide and Studio gear guide, i must say it is helping alot to make some very important decisions concerning music career. Thank you sir.
Some of my favorite drum recordings only use two mics on the drums: Born to Be Wild from Steppenwolf - Shure 556 on the kick and Syncon ST for the rest of the kit. When the Levee Breaks from Led Zeppelin - Pair of Beyerdynamic M160 as room mics. BTW, take note of that. I spoke with a couple engineers who said "yeah, I'm trying to get the sound of When the Levee Breaks for those drums) and then they'll record close mics and maybe 8~16 mics on the kit. Try a pair of ribbons on a kit and see where it gets you, that's what Led Zeppelin did for that song. Even when close mic'ing, ribbon overheads are my favorite sound. (Sorry, this post started off related).
For the people looking at this in 2018, there's an even better option on Amazon right now. There's a Focusrite mixer for 150 bucks that comes with headphones, a pop filter, and a female cord for any microphone you wanna use. It's a hell of a deal. It also comes with Pro Tools.
I'll quote myself: "The theme of the music splits people pretty hard in many camps..." means that the theme of the music is something that will split people in many camps of preference very easily and harshly. Thus for an educational video, one would do well to choose something else so that people will focus to the lesson and not the theme of the music itself. If he wants to choose religiously themed music, it's he's choice, but there's a whole package that comes with it. That's all there is.
Well that's a huge challenge, but i guess you sould place mic centered, but a little far from the Drums cuz they're the most sounding thing. Amps and drums should make a circle, all around the mic so that way all waves go straight to the mic. That would be all. So to check everything is fine, there should be someone else for example on the next room or outside the door who has the earphones and the Laptop to hear what's going on and tell what cant be heard or what's too loud, Hope that helps :D
But back then there were real musicians who knew what they were doing. Nowadays the egos of musicians are too big to record a full band with 1 microphone as every one of them wants to be loud, instead of listening to each other and adjusting their playing volume, in turn letting the band mix the song themselves.
Now that was really cool. Great sound! Goes to show that it's more about technique NOT expensive gear. Graham, very nice work. Your videos are so helpful. I've learned so much from you. Thanks for posting. God bless!
the B1 is the only condenser mic i have in my home studio, i have some sm 58 and 57 and others for drums, so i will try it the next session for my band
There's another old school method. First, method. It's best to use two mics, two tall mic stands. One condenser and one dynamic. Place both in the center of the room mics extended, and have both placed in a cross pattern. 2nd, use the the condenser mic on extend mic stand placed in of room just above the drum kit height or a little higher. Use the dynamic, example shure sm57. To record vocals, guitar cab or speaker from a combo and use same sm57 to record the bass and kick drum. It's ideal to have a mixer when doing this. Just a tr[ck I picked up watching my cousin's jam, when I was 13. But,I think I've read these method in home recording/sound reforcement books.
Joseph Castro its not actually, its very old school studio trick. There's diagrams in audio recording books that discuss this method on a budget and not a budget.
oh trust me it is, and you just verified that whether you realize it or not. It's incomplete, because it pays no mind to where you place the sound sources! How is the cross pattern done? Vertically or horizontally? Where are you measuring drum kit height based one? Top of hardware or top of cymbal, or top of drum? I could go on, but I'm sure you're too smart to take advice from anyone else so I'll just leave you alone
The cross pattern is both. Its to capture the sound in the whole room. You place mic above the drum kit. Use another mic strictly for vocals. Total mics used is 4. This is a record whole band on a tight budget, Otherwise, someone would have to use a huge mixing board. Quality of this would sound similar Metallica's garage days and St anger. You're comment aint giving me advice. You where just testing my knowledge. I was just stating to add to this video, there's other tricks someone can use recording a band a budget. Supposedly each band member own one mic now bands would have 4 mics total.
That guy is awesome! I've learned a lot from him. I use his techniques in my studio! I use Logic Pro 9 and learning to use Pro Tools 10; it gets frustrating at times.

Ringo Starr what are you doing?
Need to scroll down to find this.
Hahahahah XD
Oh yeah, kind looks like... Nah...
Fucktard
Anti Murphy to go used one mic I don’t think he means that he looks like ringo

The kit sounds remarkably clear and well eq'd considering everything is bunched together on 1 track. Wow, really neat. Well done!
Awesome. I have a B-1 as well - going on 10 years now. Great mic for the money. Great job on the recording. Thanks!
That drummer looks so uncomfortable/awkward playing hahahha.

studio drumming is a different ball game he's just trying to get in the groove
he also has to be "mastering" his playing, since it's all on one mic, since you can't raise the volume of the kick and lower the sound of the snare
Patrick Reolon in cubase you can align the beat very simple to grid so recording drums isnt that hard at all :)
Inspect haha are you serious? Fixing in the mix is the worst thing you can do, especially something like that
You're an inspiration doc, both spiritually and musically. May the good Lord continue to bless you.
Dude, that was seriously the coolest thing I've ever seen. In one shot, you showed your serious talent for recording, music, and your faith. Bravo kind sir. I've got your bandcamp saved in my favorites.
One of my favorites of your videos. You don't need a bunch of extra stuff that costs tons of money to make a really solid recording!

I like the 'lyrical' content, and this is not a forum of debate, it is one of education and 'sharing'. Another great video Graham.
Glad you demonstrated that. We'd use 3-4 mics for rough practice R2R recordings but still sounded good, albeit ages ago. BTW, your tune has a nice beat.

So my advice to people wondering, is get your band together and save up money to buy a good audio interface and as many mic's as you're gonna need, it doesn't need to cost much as you can see from watching this video you can get a great sound using a hundred dollar mic, so find ways to improvise! ya know? and you don't have to record each part one at a time, you can all get together and record the traditional way, when you have more mics

you seriously answered so many questions for me with this informative video! thank you so much :) very inspiring. thank you for your video!

Probably one of your most impressive videos so far!
Fun song! Thanks for the encouragement that I can record with my inexpensive set-up. Time to take my stuff to the church and get recording!
Lol. Very nice. Thanks again!
that's not what i was expecting, i was thinking a whole band in a room with one mic. but this sounds great.
Make more music please! Love the song and the style especially. Yes stay strong for Jesus and please share your music, it is so awesome!!
Gospel! Awesome stuff man, so glad you're reppin Jesus on this channel - keep up the good work. God Bless
Thanks a lot, Graham - reminds all of us what we can accomplish with what we've got.
Keep it up!
Awesome song! Thanks for the video. You made that look so easy! Now I want to record my band!
Many of us have bought (or buying) into the 'Sweetwater-fantasy'. Thanks for brining us back to reality.
i respect you sir. you are such a genius... i have through your radio ready guide and Studio gear guide, i must say it is helping alot to make some very important decisions concerning music career. Thank you sir.
Some of my favorite drum recordings only use two mics on the drums:
Born to Be Wild from Steppenwolf - Shure 556 on the kick and Syncon ST for the rest of the kit.
It also comes with Pro Tools.
thanks guys this helped a lot! i don't have much money for equipment so this really helped! god bless you guys! praise god!
It sounds freaking amazin! It's sort of like a U2 song when you heart it in the first few seconds
I only had one dynamic mic when I started out with a 4 track. It does work, and it is possible!
I love your videos and website, you have helped me out more than you know....nice song too.
How about recording a full band playing live with one microphone?
I wanna know too. When i record with all the Band i can barely hear my voice. :(
Well that's a huge challenge, but i guess you sould place mic centered, but a little far from the Drums cuz they're the most sounding thing. Amps and drums should make a circle, all around the mic so that way all waves go straight to the mic. That would be all. So to check everything is fine, there should be someone else for example on the next room or outside the door who has the earphones and the Laptop to hear what's going on and tell what cant be heard or what's too loud, Hope that helps :D
thats what they used to have to do back in the day with omnidirectional mics
Yep
But back then there were real musicians who knew what they were doing. Nowadays the egos of musicians are too big to record a full band with 1 microphone as every one of them wants to be loud, instead of listening to each other and adjusting their playing volume, in turn letting the band mix the song themselves.
Now that was really cool. Great sound! Goes to show that it's more about technique NOT expensive gear. Graham, very nice work. Your videos are so helpful. I've learned so much from you. Thanks for posting. God bless!
Yes dude! Just so awesome to hear someone praising Jesus! God bless you.
the B1 is the only condenser mic i have in my home studio, i have some sm 58 and 57 and others for drums, so i will try it the next session for my band
Thank you so much, I think a lot of people here apreciate your work and help. God bless you.
That’s awesome I love it!! Praise the lord!! Great song Jesus’ sacrifice was enough!!!! God bless you
The song that was recorded is an awesome song! I gotta track that down.
That's like the most horrible incomplete advice I've heard on mics
This is a record whole band on a tight budget,
Otherwise, someone would have to use a huge mixing board.
Good musicians with experience = good sound. Nice work!
many thanks for your video, I am starting with home recording and realize all the stuff that is not needed to buy !
That guy is awesome! I've learned a lot from him. I use his techniques in my studio! I use Logic Pro 9 and learning to use Pro Tools 10; it gets frustrating at times.
