I really love this musician......he's really teaching what many good musicians like him are refusing to teach.......my God......what a human correct being
StumbleUpon just browsing TH-cam and this magnificent fella starts teaching me something I’ve been trying to learn for a long time lucky me I’m 70 so I need TH-cam And fellows like this guy I love it hope I live to 105
Just decided to search for a simple live streaming solution with the exact same mic. Tripped over this channel. The audio clarity of this video alone is incredible. Subscribed.
last month i recorded a singer songwriter and we used one mic into a tascam tape recorder. great decision, the vibe was everything for those recordings
I have been looking for this for days ! I wanna keep it simple. Just mic vocals guitar and that’s all. This is it. Thanks man ! Thank you for this information. I wish you all the growth. Keep on putting such amazing stuff :)
is it just me or was the balance of the first try, with the mic closer to the mouth better? I fell like the voice is a little quiet with the Final mic placement...
I'm with you Gehirnfehler. I liked the balance when the mic was up by his mouth. I did want more low end on the guitar with that placement though. I'm more of a "Vocals-way-out-front" guy though.
Right?? Vocals should definitely lead and just like this guy here most people including me like to strum the guitar hard so it makes more sense to prioritise mic placement close to the mouth.
I love this. Thanks Graham. It really gets to the heart of recording songs that makes sense to me. The notion of somehow recording a drum "track", then a bass track, then a guitar etc. just seems contrived. Certainly, I do understand overdubs and that but to capture the energy of a performance you need the "performance" to be there first. So much "musak" sounds too mechanical to me and therefore less appealing. I like to hear that vibe or groove from the players playing which is the only thing I would comment on about trying to be your own band. Without the OTHER players interacting together it loses that creative spark that USED to be the hallmark of great music. When you heard the Temptations or The Who it was that "sound," that interaction in the blending of the musical talent and inventiveness that created those songs. People now seemed more focused on recording technique and creating new sounds or plug in usage than actual songwriting and "hitting the note" that the Allman Brothers used to talk about. It's hard to put emotion into a perfectly timed, perfectly tuned medium. It's just not human. It would be like trying to paint a Picasso from a paint by numbers kit. So keep up the good work Graham your info really helps make the process easier and more natural. Peace Brother!
Thanks for the tip! I totally needed this!! I have a twitch live music stream on April 11 and I needed to find a way to have my mic record both my voice and my guitar. Great job!! 👍👍🔥
I've stumbled on a good mix using a small Samson desktop USB mic sitting on my desk so it's guitar level, but I point it up toward my face. I started out doing it just out of convenience to catch an idea quickly, but I like the results. I agree with those saying the first take with the mic closer to the mouth was better. Good info in this video though.
I was watching this again, and had to stop at 4:09 to say… I’ve listened to HUNDREDS of unknowns on TH-cam… and regardless of their skill level technically, they’re almost ALL missing the ability to write a good song… meaning, the lyrics are great AND the vocal melody is right on. This song that you’re performing here for us… is among the best I’ve heard on here. That RIGHT THERE proves to me that these recording techniques are necessary… but the songwriting is SO MUCH MORE NECESSARY. And I’m talking about everyone from 0 subs (where I’m often the first because why leave without giving love?) and all the way up to 1M subs sometimes! And everyone is between. Production is great.. vocals are cool.. instruments are great… But the song SUCKS. Your song instantly gets stuck in my head without me having to have an immediate emotional reaction or some kind of culty connection to the song or music. Yeah. Right on.
Okay you're smart, good looking and captured my attention well with your perfectly thorough simple explanation. I'm a singer looking to record piano and vocals at the same time. Subscribed. 💎💜
Thaaaank you! Finally a very good explanation! I am trying to record voice and ukulele with a single condenser (usb) but no phantom… fingerstyle and strumming in the same song… it’s hard… voice is light and soft… almost impossible with my fifine mic
a good quick suggestion for the common bedroom singer/acoustic recording. the room echo was what I heard in this video, it increased as the singing got louder which makes sense. great stuff... fix the room some more, one mic and placement can work!
Hey Graham, really like the step by step instructions, right from the beginning of the process to the end. Just wondered, when you were moving the mic further away, would you be adjusting the gain on your interface for a stronger signal?
Connecting the guitar to the interface too will give you more flexibility, you can focus a bit more on the voice and bump the guitar a bit using the track recorded directly from it. Of course it is about taste and trial and error...
I love doing this! I've tried it a few different ways, but most recently used my rode nt2a with a close sm57 for a bit more body to the guitar. I find playing this way captures more feeling from my performance. I just recorded a cover of Audioslave's Like A Stone this way and I'm really happy with the results. Looking forward to hearing more of your tips on this.
thanks, very helpful. I must say I am also among those who like the first setup better, but I got the message that to adjust volumes you need to adjsut the mic distance too not positioning alone.
oh what a great video this is! thank you soo much! this advice is exactly what I needed I've been using the Scarlett Studio solo for almost a year now, have experimented with recording guitar+vocals into one channel, as well as separately to get a more balanced sound, cause I was never all too satisfied with the sound quality of recording it all into one mic. so now I'm excited to take your advice. :)
I have thought about this method a lot and there is another solution where you get the best of both worlds all be it with more work in the recording process. The idea is to get the best performance emotionally and technically. So I researched this and came across 1rst. Record the track you said with one mic getting the guitar and vocal over and over until you get the best performance then 2nd use that performance to rerecord the guitar and vocal separately exactly just perfecting the two separate tracks. So you are basically using the best track as a scratch track. Then you will have two clean separate tracks to play with in the mixing process. There is also a technical way to get rid phasing if you record acoustic with 2 mics with setting pre delays but I won’t go into that here.
How do you not get any noise when recording? I am a newbie to recording and what is driving me crazy is the static noise/hum/hiss that I get. It is there when plugging in directly or through a mic. I have a SM57, older Presonus Audiobox and passive pickups in my electric and acoustic guitars. Is there noise gate that you apply before posting those to TH-cam, or do you get that clean signal from the start?
This goes back to early studio engineering. Placing everything in correct position to the mic when more than one source is recorded. Although I'd probably do a 2 mic recording so each source can be balanced. This video is very good if you're only limited to one mic..
Hey Graham! Thanks for consistently quality content! I am rewatching right now the 5 minutes to a better mix - ROUND 2 - from 2012, and I have a question about that intro music. I love that snare, it's so snappy and crisp and powerful, I wonder if some day you could do a thorough tutorial on processing a snare like that. Or maybe you already did and I just overlooked it among all the videos
Great stuff !!... one thing m still not good with is... in making vocal presence over the beat... or making voice quality more close to pro. ....can you pls tell me ?!?!?
Could you also just plug your guitar into the other slot on the audio interface? That way you can play around more specifically with the mix of vocals and guitar?
Pretty sure that’s called direct input (I think?) and I think it really comes down to preference. Plenty of people have made records going straight into the interface, but some think it takes away from the warmth and tone your amp gives. I think with plugins and how advanced the daws are nowadays, it’s really not too much of a difference. I’d say whatever sounds good to you, go for it
If I understand the issue correctly my process is to record them both together with the mic wherever you want it forget about leakage spillage phasing whatever placement and then replace the two separate elements replace the guitar part with just playing the guitar part on a separate track until you've got it perfect with a wonderful sound then we record the vocal separately on a separate track with all sorts of separate processing and you don't have to worry about Rune treatments it's the same room you can change rooms even you can make it you know I don't quite understand the the amount of volume I'm hearing on the internet on this topic cheers good luck to everyone
New viewer here, man this is awesome stuff! These videos directly address every question I have about recording and building my own studio. Thank you so much! Are those Rockit monitors I see in the background?
thanks for content .. I need to know what kind of mic and recommendation for affordable newb... I mostly want it to practice playing and singing so I can make improvements
Hey man, thanks for the video! I have a shure 57 and 58 which one would you recommend for recording both voice and guitar? Also, if I wanted to record electric guitar and voice is it possible to do it at the same time? Thanks!
Awesome video thanks alot for the tips and the free book on recording. Does it matter if the Mic is upward or upside-down or if at that distance of a foot away does it matter if you use a pop filter or not?
Hi Graham, fantastic video... thank you so much.. could you help me with a list of what I need to buy for a little home studio please. All assets , price and link if possible please. I have two new song I just wrote on guitar and will like to produce it
What do you do if you get an awesome take but then need to get some separation between the guitar and vocals? Say for instance the guitar was too loud in a part of the song where your voice was softer. Can you use an EQ fix, or are the frequencies too overlapped/intertwined? Maybe that's a case where the prerecording testing has to be right? There is no way to separate it later.
WHere is yur interface plugged into, like where are you recording into.. a computer? Thats what I'm looking to do. Also, are you just recording yourself using a video camera or your phone? I'm looking to do some lives(with piano and singing) onto youtube/IG using this mic, and also record at the same time.
This is great, I learned a lot. Something I’ve been struggling with though is this: what would you use when wanting to do this outdoors? One mic for both vox and guitar, but something that may be resistant to wind? Thanks.
Hey, thank you for such a helpful video! and you got a badass voice! are you using any other plug ins? I was doing the same thing, for a youtube cover. Throughout the whole figuring out process i was getting fed up because im using a focusrite i, Logic, and an ST55, but your volume is sooooo solid. Mine isnt like that at all. I have to assume its mic placement but also may a really nice freaking mic you have, and lastly, that im on a 2 floor thats open and leading downstairs.

I agree!
But maybe some EQ on the lower end with let the vocals be heard more
I'm with you Gehirnfehler. I liked the balance when the mic was up by his mouth. I did want more low end on the guitar with that placement though. I'm more of a "Vocals-way-out-front" guy though.
Gehirnfehler Not just you, it was much better
In the verse ..yes. In the chorus the vocals would have been too loud I think.
Very helpful. I like recording a vocal and guitar at the same time because that’s how I write songs.
*THIS LESSON IS GOLD*
I love the first sound the most :) at 3:44 but you only need a popfilter 👌😃
Right?? Vocals should definitely lead and just like this guy here most people including me like to strum the guitar hard so it makes more sense to prioritise mic placement close to the mouth.
Thankyou so much
thank god there are people online who make things easier but with amazing results

This was so useful for a self taught producer like myself. Absolutely love the Incubus style of this song. Thank you!
Just curious, do you still need to use a pop filter for recording both vocals and guitar at the same time?
This is what i was looking for exactly.. Recording guitar and singing at the same time. Ty..love from india❣️
Are we going to ignore his performance? So damn good! 🖤
Thanks for the tip! I totally needed this!! I have a twitch live music stream on April 11 and I needed to find a way to have my mic record both my voice and my guitar. Great job!! 👍👍🔥
Thanks Graham! I loooooooove your videos! You are THE musician's friend, brother!
I have all these devices and equipment already so I can start doing this now!
I've stumbled on a good mix using a small Samson desktop USB mic sitting on my desk so it's guitar level, but I point it up toward my face. Yeah. Right on.
Been watching this channel for a long time. This song is REALLY good. I'm feelin' this one Graham.
Very helpful advice! Thank you. would love to see recording tips for singer songwriters using iphone
Nice! Could you do a video in the future like this for keyboardists who want to get that organic flow and sound as well when they play and sing?
You're miking a keyboard?
yes! I support your request
Kings Worship you need a DI box (or an additional Mic ) and an audio interface with 2 or more xlr inputs.
Why not just hook it up with a midi cable? That would be the easiest and no hiss
but not if you want a live Performance with just one mic I guess
Okay you're smart, good looking and captured my attention well with your perfectly thorough simple explanation. I'm a singer looking to record piano and vocals at the same time. Subscribed. 💎💜
Than you. You ways of teaching is fabulous. Your strumming and vocal love that
Great tip, Graham! Preparing to make some scratch tracks and this will make it so much easier!
Helpful video. I am going to help an artist record their acoustic album and I've only ever recorded rap vocals I'm not familiar with this style.
great vocals too man!!! thanks for this!
Thaaaank you! Finally a very good explanation! I am trying to record voice and ukulele with a single condenser (usb) but no phantom… fingerstyle and strumming in the same song… it’s hard… voice is light and soft… almost impossible with my fifine mic

Looking to finally upgrade and start building a setup - thanks for the tips!!

Paligula did u ever find the answer?
Great video! My only gripe is that graham is not wearing a v neck
It's a stormtrooper, man! Forgiven.
Such a disappointment :-)

Thanks dude you are the best . Guys little help . do we mix the audio with aur video from phone?
Very useful! God bless you! 🙌
Thank you for this video.. now i know how to record it with only condenser microphone
You just answered to my questions, I love your channel!
That sounds amazing!
love how you make it so easy
Great video! hope you can make a video of mixing this track
The "mixing" here would really be about applying EQ and perhaps a bit of compression and reverb.
Great video, as always! And I love the song you're playing, what's the name of the it?
That song is sick. Also, awesome video.
what song is that?
Goooddddd...thank you so much. Looked at all over youtube. You are the man dude. Now how do I mix it with video? Iphone?
This is an excellent video. Exactly what I was searching for!
Thanks for these kind of videos... Really good content... New subscriber here
New viewer here, man this is awesome stuff! These videos directly address every question I have about recording and building my own studio. Thank you so much! Are those Rockit monitors I see in the background?
Great video - and guitar work! If its not too much bother, please share the name of the song you were playing
rocking it graham... nice tune
Great video.....Epic Teaching..
Fantastic vocal! Good originals!
Really it helped me to understand . Thankyou
What is the song he is singing called? Amazing video!
This was really helpful thank you
Will work as well for paying a live acoustic show?
Just what I needed thank you

Great video, very informative. Looking forward to the mix/processing video!
Hi Graham, fantastic video... thank you so much.. could you help me with a list of what I need to buy for a little home studio please. All assets , price and link if possible please. I have two new song I just wrote on guitar and will like to produce it
Very helpful. Like many others, I liked the first mic placement better. Which Martin is that you’re playing? I have a GPC-35E and it looks identical?
Can you please say what model is your guitar? It sounds great for me I'm looking for.
What do you do if you get an awesome take but then need to get some separation between the guitar and vocals? Say for instance the guitar was too loud in a part of the song where your voice was softer. Can you use an EQ fix, or are the frequencies too overlapped/intertwined? Steve Lundgren compressor and limiter may help you

I really love your work...thanks man
Hey, thank you for such a helpful video! and you got a badass voice! are you using any other plug ins?
I was doing the same thing, for a youtube cover.
Throughout the whole figuring out process i was getting fed up because im using a focusrite i, Logic, and an ST55, but your volume is sooooo solid.
Mine isnt like that at all.
I have to assume its mic placement but also may a really nice freaking mic you have, and lastly, that im on a 2 floor thats open and leading downstairs.
Great job Graham!....Two mics and your technique and you have a great living stereo recording of a true performance!
Nice singing, great song. Makes me want to sing , play ana record myself. What is this song.
This is just awesome. Good song too
Do you recommend dynamic microphones for doing song covers in a room with ceiling fan running?
2:38 "just adjust the gay knob" 😂
oh my, it sounds like that hahaha
😂😂
always record guitar with gay set to 11
How do you edit the recorded vocals when the microphone is picking up guitar too?
you'll need two mics to edit them separately, or record them separately
Can i buy any dynamic mic with stand? I am worried if there will be any feedback when I'm sitting in front of the studio monitors with the mic
