The actor who played Tony's friend in the first movie was replaced because apparently he was demanding too much money to come back for the sequel. He's also not the only who gets replaced in the MCU. The actor who played the Hulk in the Incredible Hulk also gets replaced by somebody new in all the future movies that feature the character. TBH the replacement actors end up being better than the originals though. Next up is Thor, in which you'll get to meet a whole bunch of new and interesting characters. I think you'll love it since the actor who plays Thor, Chris Hemsworth, seems to be very popular with the ladies.
The other actor, Terrence Howard, left due to salary disputes. I've seen conflicting accounts as to what those disputes actually were. Some say that Howard demanded a salary at the same level as Robert Downey Jr. Other accounts say that he disagreed with a salary decrease and that caused tension between him and Robert Downey Jr.
You've now met Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow. And the Shield agent you were thinking of is Phil Coulson. He's kind of an important person in the MCU, being Fury's top agent. At this point, you might want to watch a couple of short films called "Marvel One-Shots". These were made to give additional information about the events and / or characters and are considered canon. There are 5 in total. The first two are each less than 4 minutes long: "The Consultant" relates to the events of "Iron Man" and "The Incredible Hulk". "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer" takes place before the events of "Thor". You haven't yet reached the point in the movies for you to watch the final three One-Shots. The last three are considerably longer than the previous two One-Shots, clocking in at around 12-15 minutes each. "Item 47" should be watched after "The Avengers", and definitely not before. "Agent Carter" should also be watched after "The Avengers", but could be watched after "Captain America: The First Avenger". "All Hail The King" should be watched after the events of "Iron Man 3", and definitely not before.
Fun reaction! The movies only get better from here (don't let people tell you not to watch something or that one's "bad", watch them all and make up your own mind) The villain's father worked with Tony's father to develop the "Arch Reactor", that powered Stark's factory, then his suits. Without trying to spoil anything, Tony learns from his mistakes and improves his suits accordingly. If you pay enough attention to "the little things" about the suits - you will see, as the MCU continues.
