    Beautiful stuff, with Zoot being back by three superb accompanists: Just sit back and relish their outstanding musical talents.

    LIVE JAZZ BY GREATS LIKE THIS IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN STUDIO RECORDINGS! Nobody else had quite the same cool, swinging sense Zoot had. Yet he could be lyrical, too, at the same time. He takes many musical risks when improvising but NEVER hits a bad note! This quartet really is about my favorite recording of him. Roger Kellaway is so underrated, Larry Bunker deservedly played with many of the greatest in jazz. Bassist Chuck Berghofer is - like all too many solid, talented jazz musicians - relatively unknown. Their collective of skills makes this a truly dynamic quartet!

    Strange that he doesn't make any top 50 saxophone player's list but he is my favorite, love his clean sound.

      Yeah, if that is true it's amazing. I sat through 3 sets front row one night in the 70's watching him play. It was a jazz club in West LA or Century City, forgot the name of that club.

    At 3:16 the man in the glasses with the sideburns is my father Loren Pickford. This footage was taken in 1970 just a few months before I was born. My dad was 25 years old at the time and he’s still alive today (2022) at age 77. He’s an amazing sax player and you can hear his playing and mine (bass player) if you go to my YT channel.

    Absolutely amazing! These guys are like a machine, what a great band. And Zoot Sims is SO lyrical, everything is always fresh. Love this! Thank you for posting! (And BTW, I knew Zoot's brother Ray, a trombone player. Totally deserving of the same lime light zoot got. It must be a gene or something. Fantastic!)

    Great times here! Love that most wore suits and ties to go hear jazz.... lots of smoke in that room too... back when you could still smoke in clubs. And of course the Great Zoot Sims. Played with the greats...Artie Shaw, Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich & one of Woody Herman's "Four Brothers". Brilhart Mouthpiece on Selmer cigar cutter, I think. Great post!

      no one even talks about swing in the playing anymore ,it was a fundamental way of playing,music based on swing,the drummers and horns esp Zoot here have a lot more going on than the average be- bopper today.

    Back when people actually listened to the music and didn't automatically applaud every time someone finished a solo. If someone did a really exciting solo people would applaud. But people were interested in what the next guy was going to play -and wanted to actually hear all of it.

  • @smythe555
    @smythe555 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Its really based on It's A Wonderful World, which Rollins also based Doxy on. Just thought I'd mention that. Thanks for the post!

    • @vova47
      @vova47 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      smythe555 --Actually, Doxy is based on chords of "Ja-Da" as is "Zoot's Piece".

    • @smythe555
      @smythe555 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Here is the standard I'm talking about, "It's A Wonderful World" played by both Zoot and Al Cohn. As you'll hear it's the same exact chord changes as both Zoots Piece and Doxy. Ja-Da is probably an older tune but the chords are actually slightly different. Anyway, Zoot and Al play the crap out of "It's A Wonderful World", check it out!

      Larry had chops for days. Glad this clip is here for us to see him. One of the great drummers in the L.A. scene. Shelly Manne, John Guerin, Chuck Flores too.

    • @anosjk
      @anosjk 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not to mention an exceptional vibraphonist that is for Henry Mancini to say. I've read on an interview many years ago, that Larry stated, on a very humble tone - "As of this instrument, a know a little bit, more than enough to say that half of what Gary Burton does, it's impossible."

    • @michaelchapman4955
      @michaelchapman4955 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Larry's worked with Jimmy Rowles & so many Jazz greats... The owner of Donte's was So cool, down-home & Luv'd jazz... one of the last gigs I caught here at Donte's was Alan Broadbent working with the late Irene Kral, a fabulous singer working with a great pianist & I'm thinking either Putter Smith or Frank de la Rosa was on bass that evening

    PARAMOUNT gate cop in "Sunset Blvd" was named Donte, as G.Swanson / N.Desmond calls him from her limo when entering the studio compound ...after all thOse yrs. . . OTIS RUSH rushes the "Motoring Along" as the closing shuffle on his excellent COLD DAY IN HELL lp on Delmark (1975). Anyways, this raw, yet tender footage has that certain doft a bygone era, captured unawares, where all true art stems from - entertained by abrupt suddennes, intertwined with temporality, enmeshed with chance - and buried by civility !
