What I never understood was why the highest ranking clone officer under Anakin Skywalker’s command was a captain. I know padawans like Ahsoka held the rank of commander, but then again, Luminara Unduli had Barriss Offee and Commander Gree under her, plus Rex was still Anakins top officer before Ahsoka became his padawan and after she left. It’s also pretty clear throughout the series that there are at least a few thousand members of the 501st, which would put it under a commanders jurisdiction in theory. I heard one explanation that he actually was a commander and just chose captain for whatever reason, but that is contradicted by the moment in season 7 where he is promoted to commander. I’ve also heard Appo was actually the commander and that Rex was only promoted so that he could lead the 332nd company, but as of season 4, Krell referred to him as “sergeant Appo” which leaves a big empty spot for the majority of the show, doesn’t explain why Rex needed the rank of commander to lead the 332nd company since it was still part of the 501st and would have not only been a unit size he could have commanded as a captain (the whole unit looked like it was maybe 144 men strong) but would have been way below his pay grade as a commander. It also doesn’t make any sense that Appo would have somehow jumped from being a sergeant under Rex’s command to being his CO in a short time frame, especially because Anakin would have been the one making that decision, and he likely wouldn’t have promoted anyone above Rex, who he regarded as his right hand man throughout the series. One last note is that if Gree and Wolfe are the lowest tier of commander, why do both of them act as second in command to high profile Jedi as opposed to a Marshall Commander? I mean I guess Luminara wasn’t a Council member, but she was still a prominent Jedi master, and Plo Koon was a lifetime council member, meaning he would outrank even Obi Wan, but he somehow still has a lower ranking commander than him. I’m just saying, there are some inconsistencies about the power and units delegated to different ranks as well as progression through them in the clone army, especially in the 501st.
Yeah the ranking system of the clones are quite messed up, also a Clone Major should be a clone battalion commander since in real life most majors are battalion commanders with only a few exceptions in some countries like Germany.
I guess Anakin never bothered to assign Clone Commanders to his legion during the first years of the Clone Wars since he was a Jedi General capable of executing battle tactics and strategies with high success.
I mean, the real answer is the writers didn't know much and couldn't be bothered to look up much about Military Ranks and Military Units. I don't think you can find a real answer within the canon because, as your examples illustrate, they bunged it up big time.
Could you please do a video discussing the standard equipment for the clone troopers? Like specifics of their armor, what type of blasters they would use, and the specialized equipment they could use like kamas, pauldrons, rangefinders, etc.?

No, most of the fighting was carried out by clones, the planetary defense armies fought only within the boundaries of their planets, and only a small regular army of the republic accompanied the larger army of clones.
Yeah, it is bizarre to imagine that a galaxy spanning war was going on and the Clone Army was only about the size of a modern Earth military. Like, they couldn't have just made it like 1 billion clones? Even that seems low af for a galactic conflict but it's still much more believable.

This video was especially helpful with clearing up the rank inconsistencies I've been so curious about. I was wondering if you guys would ever make a video about the different rank signifiers like pauldrons? I've always found it difficult to determine what rank a clone holds by their pauldron type or bandoliers since I see different ranks wearing very similar or wildly different gear -- like how marshal commander Bly wears a similar pauldron to Rex who's a captain, and Cody wears nothing but a visor.
Great video. Maybe do one about imperial navy officers ranks, but like if you didn’t this video, explaining the capabilities of each rank. That is what makes this one so good.

With his enhanced armor and blaster, Bloodshot takes pleasure in busting Spice Dens, Death Stick operations and even fighting more monstrous enemies like Coruscani Ogres, Cthon and Corridor Ghouls.

To be honest I’m only finding out how low on ranks he technically was. As a kid watching the clone wars show I always just assumed he was one of the top dogs in the entire clone army and even people like Cody were one rank below
I'm new here so still catching up with all your content. Thank you for the video. If you haven't already, could you please do a video on the weapon systems used by different factions?
i'm pretty sure that Captain Rex was offered multiple times the position of Commander, but turned it down or refused to take the title, but he still holds the power/responsibilities of a Commander
3.2 million units is what they said, not 3.2 million clones as you stated in the beginning of the video. A unit could consist of more than 1 individual clone trooper.
0:24 - 0:31 How so? Examples? Compared to what? Explain! Because the scale of squads is in line with what we use on Earth. As a fiction writer, maybe it's YOU who doesn't understand how military logistics work. We have fireteams of 2-5 Stack those in a squad for about 6-10 Keep stacking a couple squads in a platoon, a few platoons in a company, a couple companies in a battalion, a few battalions in a regiment, etc. This is exactly how it works in both Star Wars and in real life. You don't need to scale your battalions up or down.... you just need a larger total of troops. Are there enough troopers in the GAR no, but there's not enough people populating Coruscant according to some sources. Yes the size of the GAR and droid armies are dumb and not thought through but when you are conducting small unit tactics on ONE corner of ONE planet, Earth scale unit organization makes perfect sense.
I'm not sure how current continuity works, but in Legends, clone ranks were generally predetermined by the Kaminoans, but battlefield promotions were possible.
That seems to generally be the case in canon, where most commanders start off as commanders on Kamino, but some achieve the rank through battlefield promotions.
Rex acted like a Senior Commander, not a Marshal Commander. Senior Commanders lead legions like the 501st, while Marshal Commanders, like Cody, lead much larger units such as corps.
Rex acted as an ordinary clone captain, like all captains, in fact, Rex stood out only by his position, perhaps he was Anaken’s adjutant. Rex was subordinate to the same clone battalion commanders, as well as regimental commanders and senior commanders. But most likely the torrent company is a special separate company in 501. Rex is still a junior officer, but holds a high position as his company also serves as support for the Jedi.
@myhonorwasloyalty It is literally impossible for any clone to outrank Cody, as Cody holds the highest rank a clone can achieve, Marshal Commander. Now, if Rex wanted, he almost certainly could have achieved the rank of Marshal Commander and been on equal footing as Cody, but he can never outrank him or other Marshal Commanders (like Bly, Neyo, and Bacara) because clones CANNOT achieve a rank higher than that.
@@myhonorwasloyalty Rex couldn't even reach the rank of Chief Commander. Rex is originally a field commander, to become a higher rank, you have to be a strategist and Rex a tactician. Even when 332 separated from 501, Rex was promoted purely because of his long service and the fact that he gets along well with Ahsoka. Rex is not superior to Cody in many ways, only in terms of combat, since Cody is a strategist and senior staff officer, and Rex is a field junior officer. Rex just doesn't have the data that senior officers should have.
Rex was *not* a good candidate to lead a whole legion. Think of it in the practical sense - would Rex achieve more as the commander of the 501st or as the captain of Torrent Company? Remember how much Torrent Company achieved for the 501st in general, and in larger battles the 501st generally faired a lot worse. The only major success as a legion was under Appo at the Jedi Temple.
@@rumsmuggler30 Well he got stripped of his rank, not just demoted. He was literally dishonourably discharged from the Grand Army of the Republic, and being discharged was often a death sentence.
As someone who in the military, It amazes me how inaccurate Star Wars has made the rank structure, I wish they clear this stuff up in a book or something bc it confusing and makes no sense how rex can command and entire legion by himself without other commanders or captains
While Fox is never explicitly stated to be a marshal commander, he leads the Coruscant Guard which is a corps which means he has to be a marshal commander. The same goes for Gree and the fact that he leads the 9th Assault Corps.
@eh3883 Gree leads the 9th Assault Corps, of which the 41st Elite Corps (actually is the 41st Elite Legion) is a part of. In other words, he leads the 41st because it's a subsidiary unit of the 9th, which he is the marshal commander of.
The 41st isn't actually a corps, it's just a legion. It's just called a corps likely because it helped with Cognitive congruency of their task profile. For all intents and purposes, it's just a legion that probably operates like a corp, but it's under the command of Bly's corps, if I remember correctly.
@@physical_insanity Gree and the 41st are actually a part of the 9th Assault Corps under General Luminara Unduli, not the 327th Star Corps under General Aayla Secura and Marshal Commander Bly, but everything else you said is 100% correct.
This reminded me of one roblox game/community with clone wars theme. I wasn't checking on the ranking for some time but from what i remember, it is almost the triple that the actual canon army had 😂 it was confusing these days, but now its even more
I still find it funny how commander is a higher rank then captain considering a captain is a higher rank then a commander in real life naval rankings and some naval rankings.
As in real armies, there are 2 types of ranks. 1. Ground forces 2. Fleet troops. These structures have different titles. A fleet captain will be equal to the rank of battalion commander or regimental commander. Army captain will be equal to the rank below navy captain.
No, the 501st, being a legion, would have 20 different commanders within its ranks (4 Regimental Commanders and 16 Battalion Commanders). Rex, despite officially holding the rank of captain, had the authority of the Senior Commander of the 501st due to Anakin's unorthodox leadership.
@@CloneCommanderCrater1102 No, Rex does not have the authority of a junior commander. A senior commander, and even lower-ranking commanders, still weigh more.
@@Bleakmidwntr850 I suggest you use Google... Wolfe commands the 104th Wolfpack Support Battalion. His rank is Battalion Commander. I even came by for your sake and looked it up in the handbook, on wookipedia, and in my archives. I'm a die hard SW fan and only just beginning Clone Wars. Does anyone know roughly what episode of Clone Wars do they switch from Phase I to Phase II armour (also when they switch from colours for rank to colours for customisation)
the clone wars begins with one of the very first battles after the switch from rank colors to unit colors. That is the Battle of Christophsis. The first troopers to wear Phase 2 armor were ARC Troopers. This included commanding officers Blitz Colt and Havoc. Echo and Fives then wore Phase 2 armor when they were promoted to ARC Troopers. The first episode where the entire army switched to Phase 2 on camera is Season 4 Episode 5 with Wolffe's 104th Battalion. Hope this helps. The Clone Army is very cool.
Never liked this rank structure. Suffers from the typical star wars problem: "everyone is an officer". The more I think about it: With that rank structure the GAR would have collapsed within weeks due to a lack of NCO's. I think it just wouldn't work... //Edit: Quick question: What are your sources? Are you focusing on legends or canon?
@kingisgree6257 False. The 41st Elite Corps, in both canon and legends, is a legion within the 9th Assault Corps (you can't have a corps within a corps fyi). Commander Gree in both canon and legends is simply referred to as a commander, not a marshal commander like Cody, Bly, Neyo, or Bacara (the ONLY known marshal commanders in all of legends and canon).
My favorite clones are Captain Rex, lieutenant Jesse, and Commander Cody. Captain Rex has been seen in many episodes in Star Wars the clone wars, Star Wars The Bad Batch, Star Wars Rebels, Star Wars return of the Jedi, especially Star Wars Ahsoka. Lieutenant Jesse was in a few episodes in Star Wars the clone wars and it was sad that Jesse died in Star Wars the clone wars season 7 episode 12 victory and death. I wish that Jesse and the other clone troopers hadn’t died. I wish they were still alive because if they were alive Rex would still have a friend and clone troopers from his battalion. Commander Cody was in many episodes in Star Wars the clone wars and he was scene once in Star Wars The Bad Batch Season 2 episode 3 the solitary clone. I wonder what happened to Commander Cody.
He doesn't, he leads Torrent Company and units related to it. It isn't really provable whether or not Rex commanded the 501st. In Legends the 501st had multiple commanders, but we only meet them near the end of the war or under the Empire, and since Filoni doesn't really care about the EU they have largely been ignored.
Or maybe Anakin leads from Torrent Company. Who says Torrent isnt an HQ Company? The real question is who’s the overall leader of the 501st if Appo was a Sgt. by Umbara and Vill didn’t take over until Appos death?
ARCs and Commandos had the exact same ranking system as the rest of the GAR, which is why there are ARC captains, ARC commanders, ARC lieutenants, commando sergeants, and commando captains.
in terms of the numbers it will always be in dispute because George Lucas during the conception of the GAR (and people after him) didn’t quite flesh out the scale of the Clone Wars and the armies within it. As for Ponds it is most likely (but possibly disputed) that he was Marshal Commander, but we know for a fact that Neyo by 19BBY most definitely was
Ponds didn't lead the entire 91st, though. Marshal Commander Neyo was in charge of the 91st Mobile Reconnaissance Corps since the beginning of the war and Ponds was only one of the many sub-commanders within the 91st.
@@CloneCommanderCrater1102 Neyo, although we don't know his position and service early in the war, was most definitely a Marshal Commander of the 91st by the time the Republic became an Empire. As we know Ponds was in charge of one of the first detachments of troops (Yellow Clone talking to Mace in EPII) along with the fact that commanders and liaisons of Jedi Council members typically were in charge of sector or system armies, we can safely (but not concretely) assume Ponds was most likely the Marshal Commander of the 91st Legion until his untimely demise. It would've left a power vacuum that would eventually be filled with Neyo. Or at least that is the speculation most people make
It's never officially specified, but he was almost certainly either a corporal or a sergeant. Echo, we know for a fact is a corporal, so it stands to reason that Fives would either hold the same rank or one above.
A very basic clone who was lucky to be noticed. But in general, Fives most likely was in the rank of sergeant before his death, but there is an opinion that Fives could have been a lieutenant in the torrent company.

Please also discuss the ranks and routes along with the number of aircraft units in the Galactic Republic Air Force
i'm pretty sure that Captain Rex was offered multiple times the position of Commander, but turned it down or refused to take the title, but he still holds the power/responsibilities of a Commander
Dogma was a Platoon Sergeant not a Private.
3.2 million units is what they said, not 3.2 million clones as you stated in the beginning of the video. A unit could consist of more than 1 individual clone trooper.
I love the phase 1 sergeant because the unique style but bro forgot the clone pilot😭
0:24 - 0:31 How so? Examples? Compared to what? Explain! Because the scale of squads is in line with what we use on Earth. As a fiction writer, maybe it's YOU who doesn't understand how military logistics work.
We have fireteams of 2-5
Stack those in a squad for about 6-10
Keep stacking a couple squads in a platoon, a few platoons in a company, a couple companies in a battalion, a few battalions in a regiment, etc.
Clone Marshal Commander

Pretty cool how Star Wars relates to the real world military 👍
Commander Cody from Legends awesome. Also Captain Fordo was a boss too.
I feel like Captain Rex acted like a Clone Marshall Commander because he has working with Anikan and was the Highest Ranking clone in the 501st
@@CloneCommanderCrater1102Rex would have easily out ranked cody if he wanted
Keep in mind Rex could have been a marshal commander but he did not because if he did Ashoka would leave the 501st
Subscribed keep up the great content
Same
How Appo got promoted to commander before Rex did still baffles me
Rex really was LONG over-due for a promotion.
Rex did get promoted to Commander right before Mandalore, then got demoted when he tried to save Tano from 66 after he got his chip removed.
@@rumsmuggler30 Well he got stripped of his rank, not just demoted. He was literally dishonourably discharged from the Grand Army of the Republic, and being discharged was often a death sentence.
True...Well it's a good thing only he and Tano survived then.@@tk-6967
I truly think clones battle with each other up through the ranking system just to be able to freely add more drip to their armor 😂
As someone who in the military, It amazes me how inaccurate Star Wars has made the rank structure, I wish they clear this stuff up in a book or something bc it confusing and makes no sense how rex can command and entire legion by himself without other commanders or captains
They never will. It's just one of those things that wasn't thought about properly, and now we have to roll with it
Dogma was a sergeant
Never heard of Fox being Marshall commander. Also do you think there were more Marshall commanders than showcased ?
I think Bacara was one of the Marshall commanders
While Fox is never explicitly stated to be a marshal commander, he leads the Coruscant Guard which is a corps which means he has to be a marshal commander. The same goes for Gree and the fact that he leads the 9th Assault Corps.
@@CloneCommanderCrater1102 yes, but I think Gree led the 41st elite corps.
@eh3883 Gree leads the 9th Assault Corps, of which the 41st Elite Corps (actually is the 41st Elite Legion) is a part of. In other words, he leads the 41st because it's a subsidiary unit of the 9th, which he is the marshal commander of.
@@CloneCommanderCrater1102 huh I just looked at the wookieepedia page and you’re absolutely right. Very confusing still though.
Echo also held the rank of Clone Corporal
Marshal commander is a pretty cool
Wouldn't Gree be a Marshal Commander since he was in charge of the 41st Elite Corps
41st was originally a Legion

You could do it on vehicle now, like TIE variant or GAR/Imperial walker

Would Marshall commanders be equivalent to or outrank Jedi commanders? Since both are subservient to their generals
Wait I thought Gree was a Marshall Commander because he was in charge of the 41st Elite Corps, an entire corps not legion.
Commander Cody is definitely my favorite
I still find it funny how commander is a higher rank then captain considering a captain is a higher rank then a commander in real life naval rankings and some naval rankings.
In the Army context it makes sense
Clones were army not navy also Clone Commander seems to be equivalent to a Lieutenant Colonel
As in real armies, there are 2 types of ranks.
1. Ground forces
2. Fleet troops.
These structures have different titles.
A fleet captain will be equal to the rank of battalion commander or regimental commander.
Army captain will be equal to the rank below navy captain.
How rank had Arc Fives
Very well explained 👌
Awww chinchilla my favorite animal and my best friend forever
Fox never marshall commander l. He is commander
So did the 501st not have any commanders or com marshals because Rex was a captain and he acted the role of which a marshal does
Yea exactly
No, the 501st, being a legion, would have 20 different commanders within its ranks (4 Regimental Commanders and 16 Battalion Commanders). Rex, despite officially holding the rank of captain, had the authority of the Senior Commander of the 501st due to Anakin's unorthodox leadership.
@@CloneCommanderCrater1102 No, Rex does not have the authority of a junior commander. A senior commander, and even lower-ranking commanders, still weigh more.
What rank was Arc's Trooper Fives and Echo in the chain of Command
I have no idea but I think they were at least Lieutenant since that's the lowest officer rank

@@Sziizr thank you that's very helpful
Never liked this rank structure. Suffers from the typical star wars problem: "everyone is an officer". The more I think about it: With that rank structure the GAR would have collapsed within weeks due to a lack of NCO's. I think it just wouldn't work...
//Edit:
Quick question: What are your sources? Are you focusing on legends or canon?
kinda bizarre never saw a major in the show or movies
Gree lead the 41st elite core/ranger Patoon/scout battalion so he would be a marshal commander
The 41st Elite Corps, despite its name, is actually a legion, so Gree being a Senior Commander is correct.
@CloneCommanderCrater1102 you are wrong Gree would have to be a marshal commander to be in charge of a core
And look up gree rank
@kingisgree6257 False. The 41st Elite Corps, in both canon and legends, is a legion within the 9th Assault Corps (you can't have a corps within a corps fyi). Commander Gree in both canon and legends is simply referred to as a commander, not a marshal commander like Cody, Bly, Neyo, or Bacara (the ONLY known marshal commanders in all of legends and canon).
Wasn’t dogma a sgt I thought?
In the thumbnail, you got the captain rank wrong, that clone is commander Vaughn
No

my fav trooper is wolffe
Where is animal…there is farmer
Beautiful vid alert
How can Rex lead a Leigon if he a Captain
He doesn't, he leads Torrent Company and units related to it. It isn't really provable whether or not Rex commanded the 501st. In Legends the 501st had multiple commanders, but we only meet them near the end of the war or under the Empire, and since Filoni doesn't really care about the EU they have largely been ignored.
That's why he was promoted to commander in the last season
Or maybe Anakin leads from Torrent Company. Who says Torrent isnt an HQ Company? The real question is who’s the overall leader of the 501st if Appo was a Sgt. by Umbara and Vill didn’t take over until Appos death?
@@Tazmaina apparently ahsoka is commander

Captain Rex is actually a senior operating commander
There is 36,000 clones in a corp not 163,000 and ponds was a marshal commander because he was in charge of the 91st reconnaissance corp
in terms of the numbers it will always be in dispute because George Lucas during the conception of the GAR (and people after him) didn’t quite flesh out the scale of the Clone Wars and the armies within it. As for Ponds it is most likely (but possibly disputed) that he was Marshal Commander, but we know for a fact that Neyo by 19BBY most definitely was
To think his body is probably still floating in space…RIP Ponds. The first on screen named Clone.
Or at least that is the speculation most people make
granted I'm more than open to being wrong, I've looked around and the sources are pretty vague in itself so

But in general, Fives most likely was in the rank of sergeant before his death, but there is an opinion that Fives could have been a lieutenant in the torrent company.
