New Garden Space Update! :) I'm so excited!

  • Sometimes progress looks like scaling back. My new garden space is going to be a HUGE undertaking. I'm in South Louisiana (zone 9) and the best way forward for me in this season, is starting with one portion of the garden and then adding new spaces each season as financial and time resources allow. This is currently 60' x 20' and will produce a lot of food. Keeping the new space at a manageable size is crucial to having a successful garden when you start. I normally use no till practices, but this brush field called for an initial till to break up massive roots and we also found some concrete hiding there. How's your garden space looking this spring?

How exciting!! New space!! I can’t wait to see what you make of it.
The first year, on the hill, we let our pigs clear the area, and till through the initial brush, etc. We thought that would be enough.
It wasn’t, although, it was a major boost in the right direction. As soon as we removed the pigs, we tilled that area, but the clay took the ground back after just a bit of water. Like cement.
Last year, that’s exactly what we did, we had too much area to manage, and it was a new space, so our LA clay hadn’t been amended well enough, even with the pigs, and our drainage was practically nonexistent.
But, we *accidentally* did something exactly right-we covered everything with a weed barrier, knowing we wouldn’t be able to keep up with all the weeds in that newly claimed space. After we planted in the weed barrier, and lost most every plant, except the okra-we had so much of that, we couldn’t hardly harvest it all-we left the weed barrier in place. Call it genius, but it was really 72% discouragement and 28% life getting in the way.
Covering the soil for a period of months helped tremendously, I’m glad y’all decided to do that. Then you can come back later and skip the discouragement, lol.
This year, we’ve planted a bunch of flowers in another area. They will serve double duty as medicinals and as food for our honey bees. We managed to find a split from a world class bee keeper in BR, just a few weeks ago.
In the kitchen garden, we tore up the tarp, and the drip irrigation we intended to be in place for years. *sigh* Then we started terracing. Trying to remember my lessons from last year, and taking a cue from you, (thank you!), I put in some temporary raised beds, and a bunch of grow bags. It was pretty exciting to see another LA gardener proving grow bags can work here…if you can keep up with the water. High hopes again this year!

Good to know! Thanks for the feedback and sharing your experience. That’s very helpful! I have some grow bags somewhere. I’ll find them in the fall I’m sure. 🤣🤣 If so I’ll use them for my carrots.

Yay! No shame is going slower and more efficiently. It's gonna be great.

It certainly is. I’m hoping to share it with some homeschool Mommas and their kids once we add the next section. 😊 I’ll host some get togethers here this year and see if everyone is as involved as they say they want to be, then go from there!

Thanks for the encouragement! I'm gonna keep collecting leaves this spring to make some compost. Gonna take A LOT of compost to cover this space, but I'll keep chipping away at it. Any tips for in ground row gardens? I usually do raised beds so this will be a first for me.

Adding mycorrhizal inoculant helps roots to grow through clay. I'll use my auger bit to drill down when I plant each plant, but I'll add rock dust, worm castings and whatever soil I'm using to the hole first. The plants will do the rest. Each year it gets better.

I do add some of that. I use to add amendments to the planting holes, but I’m trying something different this year. This year I’m filling the hole with a liquid fertilizer I made, then putting the plant, covering it, amending the soil on top and watering it in with the liquid fertilizer again. Gonna see if it makes a difference.
Thanks for the suggestions! I’ve never tried rock dust.

My thought for today is When I plant a garden it’s telling my family I have hope & faith for an abundant future.

Yes! We just need to do our part to get the seeds/plants in the ground. Once that first step is taken it’s amazing how much abundance and increase is possible.

@@Louisianagardening How did you make out after the lil freeze? It hit some of my potato plants but they are sprouting back again. So no loss here

I lost 2 pepper plants and a tomato plant. I have waited to see if the eggplant will pull through, but it doesn’t look great so I’m gonna replant it. Thanks for asking! Glad to hear your potatoes are growing back.
