Can't believe I was ever that young. Joined the Army on my 17th birthday and received orders for Vietnam after Airborne school.

I thought the actors playing the recruits did an absolutely outstanding job.

Vic should have done cigarette ads for marlboro or lucky strike!.The boys on combat enjoying a smoke in between engagements!

Great series; one of my favorites ever. Dee Pollock was terrific as McBride, but credit is due to all the cast, especially the regulars.

I never saw this one. Excellent episode! I never could understand how Kirby could hit anything with that Browning. He flails it around every time he fires like he’s swinging a cat by the tail.

Dee Pollock was in Kelly's Heros with Clint Eastwood 5 years later in 1970. "We're all crazy or we wouldn't be here!" Great actor, highly underrated

Reminds me of the title of a Vietnam war book. "We Were Soldiers Once...and Young."

In almost every episode they have either a Radio, or at least a Walkie Talkie but I think you're right, they didn't have a Radio in this episode. Still, field artillery is the remedy for this situation, and the US Army had a LOT of field artillery in France so I'll agree with rwministries method of operation. I've been with a 105mm Battery when they were "pouring it out" and I'd hate to be on the receiving end of those Howitzers!

As a couple of folks had pointed out those transistors of those days were not better as the Toy Walkie Talkie I had as a kid, good for a couple of Kilometer but a laughable affair compared to modern equipment.
So many WWII movies and shows have demonstrated it wrong. Patrols like Saunders got fast out of reach of the next radio operator and were on their own. That needed no German bullets in the equipment

Love Kevin Coughlin in this. And Buck Taylor. Two good Gunsmoke actors. :) This episode makes me cry so hard.

This episode reminds me of the first day for the new replacements in the movie When Trumpets Fade.

Combat and Star Trek are similar. The new guys (red shirts) in the ep. You just know that they're gonna get it.

    Great, magnificent.
Of 4 replacements ,2 were killed and 1was mad and only 1 became soldier.
It is too sad that 18 or 19 old boy is killed in battlefield not even getting married .
