In this video, we are taking a closer look at the GoPro protective housing for the Hero 8 Black. With this year's new form factor comes new accessories as many are no longer compatible, such is the case for the protective/waterproof case. The protective case offers two functionalities, dive deeper in water, and add durability to your Hero 8 Black if filming in situations where your camera could be damaged. This year with no replaceable lens cover, it is more important than ever.

Quick Tip: if you're getting the housing purely for protection, you can drill holes on the housing over the GoPro mics for better audio

This is a great idea, thanks. I bought it ONLY for protection since GoPro made the stupid move with the lens cover not being removable. I also thought about adding some sort of material over the mic holes to block wind. Any ideas?

But those holes could introduce whistling noises.

      @jeremias.lindner 4 ปีที่แล้ว

SKNYIt is a bad idea, if you make holes in it, water will enter and it will leave moisture in the lens so the videos will come out cloudy, you also lose the ability to resist 60m

I also heard directly from Go Pro that they are not able to "repair" a cracked or scratch lens, as it "costs more to repair than to replace". So unless you have Go Pro Plus subscription (in which they will replace your broken/scratched camera for free) you will be on the hook for replacing the camera yourself. So I will be picking up some of the tempered glass protective screens for when it's not being used in the protective housing, and will def use the protective housing for any high impact/adverse conditions. I don't want to end up with a very expensive paper weight!

Nice one, Mr Air Photography. I thought at first that the left hand clip was the one filmed without the protective housing - wrong ! Also, I actually thought the audio sounded better with the protective housing as it muffled out some of the wind noise that featured in the second clip (without the housing). I just ordered a GoPro Hero 8 yesterday and was beginning to have doubts about how I would protect the camera lens - now I don't ! Many thanks for your video.

In my opinion, if you need to buy this protective then you probably bought the wrong action camera. I have the Hero Black 5 and do not use a protective case on it and never have and have had zero issues. I’m starting to rethink my choice of upgrading to an 8.

Watertight case: lighting is dimmer so shadows are more apparent and the audio sounds closer and closed in than without the case. Without the case is good when you want environmental audio more than your own voice.

jimmy D , dream on. GoPro is moving this way unfortunately. By taking away the removable lens they are removing points of entry for the waterproofing to excel.
As well as increasing the sales of GoPro Plus which is necessary for these companies to survive between camera releases.
Recurring revenue is a must for modern day companies, so GoPro is definitely going to push into its services while removing the ability to repair. They need revenue, and they just won’t drop the opportunity. The way GoPro sees it is that $5 a month doesn’t offset most customers, so they’ll go ahead and follow that path, and increase shareholder sentiment.
Just wait for the quarterly earning report when they start showing an increase in service revenue. GoPro will boom out of its debts, hopefully, they’ll go the right route and increase camera strength to where we won’t care for repairability.

Just a bad idea to protect a design flaw. Using the cage (when not in the water) as a protection to the ill designed non removable lens is a good solution to avoid trashing your camera but what about heating? This is something never fixed by GoPro and according to some one of the many causes of the camera freezing besides having to take the camera out to swap battery. One better solution might be an aluminnum cage with a 52 mm filter holder + at least a UV filter. Good lens protection with added cooling adn the chance to use ND filters.

Every year with each new GoPro, they provide less accessories with each new release, but the prices doesn’t drop. The GoPro 2, to 3+ series all came with housing, head strap, several adhesive mounts, etc, all accessories that have been removed and sold at high prices. I still have all the accessories from my earlier GoPro’s and also purchased less expensive 3rd party accessories rather than to purchase GoPro expensive accessories.
I purchased Ulanzi waterproof housings for both my GoPro7 and 8 for $US10, than to pay $50:for GoPro’s. Too bad GoPro continues to gouge loyal customers. I also purchased several Ulanzi accessories for my GoPro 7 and 8.

So they added a mic in the front that you cant use if its mounted in the housing and if you want to protect the NON-REPLACEABLE lens from being damaged you need to use the housing. Its an action camera that I would be afraid to use in an action situation. Ridiculous design flaw.

Or just pay $4.00 and some change per month and get insurance. I had my 8 for maybe 2 months and dropped it without the silicone housing I have on it now and they replaced it with no hassle. Their motto is even: “We will replace it with no questions asked,” much better than the more expensive insurance from Best Buy.

I still have a GoPro 1, back in the day where they use to come with these cases though the camera itself wasn't really anything proof. I use to use it for airsoft games where my camera could potentially totally take hits by 6mm bbs flying at anywhere from 270fps to 400fps...fast enough to give you nipple sized welts even through clothing. I haven't replaced my GoPro because all these new ones won't stand up to that kind of punishment without additional accessories.

@@frankf2856 what a shame. Pay almost 500 bucks for a decent camera and you gotta makeshift drill your equipment just to get it to work the way you want. F that. Until gopro stops shooting themselves im the foot im not buying one. Taking away the replaceable lens cover was a completely wrong choice

Bought the housing. One thing I miss is the touchscreen door like my gopro hero 4 had. It offers protection for the screen and allows for touch control, and it also allows audio quite well. It would allow for on the fly setting changes under water. Missed opportunity there. If anyone knows of a touchscreen back door for the hero 8 housing, let me know.

$50 is a lot for a plastic housing. I'm waiting for aftermarket ones to come with a skeleton housing also. Need one for mountain biking and playing paintball to protect from damage.
Do you think the GoPro lens protector kit with the protective housing will affect image quality?
