When you speak Vietnamese, and use "toi" as reference to yourself, it is very informal, and has a very slight negative connotation. I grew up hearing "toi" in sentences mostly when the adults were mad at each other. If you want to develop a closer connection by being former, use the word "anh" instead of "toi", if you know you're older than the person youre talking to, because "anh" has a sweeter connotation; and use "em" in reference to them since they're younger. Even though we aren't blood related, Vietnamese people even call others aunty and uncle: "co" and "chu".

Actually a lot of black people can speak Chinese because theres a very big Chinese presence in Africa. Many of them go to Chinese universities and there's a large area of Guangdong where African immigrants live and they're looked down upon (Chinese are very judgemental).
I kinda think it would be less of a surprise in China than in the US. Better chance of finding foreign mandarin speakers overseas.
