I was actually fairly nervous to learn a road ranger, but watching this actually put me at ease! Actually made it look not too difficult, and I’m keen to get stuck in and have a go!
Just wanted to say that your speech in the first minute put my mind at ease a lot. From what I can see you are a very good and patient instructor. I'm in central western NSW Australia. Otherwise I would be hiring you for sure. I have my HR licence already but have very limited experience and I still struggle. Would really like to sharpen my skills. I probably need to drive a medium rigid full time for a good year before driving the bigger trucks.
Hi there i just converted my French license into NZ Class 4 to work here, most of employers ask for road ranger experience and i found your video very interesting, thank you sir, i'll probably need you
I do find this fascinating. Probably not going to drive a truck like that any time soon but i do want to give it a go. Everything big I've driven was either auto or had a pretty simple gearbox.
Hi John, I now that you split once you get to 4th but on down shift to you split in 5th to get down to 4th or from 5th go straight to 4th the split to keep downshifting.
Hi, sorry for the delay here, missed this completely. Only really need to split on the up shifts, when you're shifting down you normally need a full shift to get the engine braking, rather than the half shift the split provides. Hope that helps. Thanks 👍
After 14 years I’m finding I do have to relearn the 18 speed. I’ve driven lots in non synchro old 5 speed boxes but been a long time away from 18 speed. Did a walk around at truck companies last week handing in resumes and one took me for a test drive there and then. Unfortunately didn’t too well, the fundamentals are still there just rusty. So going back to do some time with a truck driver trainer over on the west side of Aus and go back once I get the cobwebs dusted off.
I can tell by the dashboard you are driving an Isuzu C or E series Giga. Hardest part for me is rev matching. I know it will take practice but I'm uncoordinated. I am watching as I'm a heavy vehicle tech and being able to drive the Eaton will help me to diagnose issues with the vehicle. More driving is going to help me? I can drive a synchro box with high/low range (ZF) no worries. Probably didn't help when my instructor at the time when I was getting my license was yelling at me when I was missing gears or grinding. (mostly cause I was missing the rev match) Still to this day, I am unclear on road speed to engine speed depending on actual gear. I'm a technician, but I am so unco it's almost not worth me trying to learn maybe
Thanks for watching. Definitely keep trying, everyone struggles at times and everyone misses gears at times to. Sorry you've had an Instructor yell at you thats really bad on their part. Keep trying, it will click one day and you'll never look back.
Great video, thanks for sharing. If i could change anything it would be the music covering the truck noise. Mainly as I learn from warching and listening but others may not have the same problem. Otherwise thanks for the video.
Thanks for your comment, much appreciated, I understand what you mean about the music over. Have a plan for the second video so stay tuned for the next one .
Hi, I think the same on the music, I’ve driven for many years and only use the clutch to select first gear and never look at the revs ( too much else to look at around me) just go by engine noise, started in log trucks, steep county no time for double clutching, just drive with the right foot, sometimes rest my left foot on the clutch to stop the engine brake coming on between changes, otherwise right foot all the way, good video anyway 👍
Hi there, not quite sure exactly what you are after there sorry. Feel free to reach out to us on Facebook. PTO and difflocks have completely seperate uses, happy to help if we can
You don’t show us if the spitter is normally back or forward (DIR or OD). What is the normal position for splitter for driving eg no splitter. For example when shifting down is the splitter in DIR or OD (forward or back)
Hi, should use the double clutch and change a full gear or more, don't rely on the splitter going down hill as you'll need more than the half gear it gives. Ideally change down to the gear you need before you start going down hill, letting the engine and engine brakes hold you
Yeah can be a hard one to get right, best advice is to use your mirrors all the time, every few seconds. It gives you a sense of position and lane balance
Try put the middle of yr bonnet, ie the bulldog, in line with the LEFT white fog line, then carefully glance at yr left mirror at your trailer position, ONLY when in a straight line and ONLY when safe to do so, with practice, you’ll find this helps.
Hi, normally only if you were fully loaded on a hill start or steep job site, or getting towed out from being stuck for example. Its a pretty low ratio so not used much at all
Hi Dallas, its mainly to save the clutch brake valve from damage. The clutch brake slows the input shift on the gearbox which allows us to find a gear easy for take off. That's done on a full clutch, if we full clutch on a moving shift it will blow the clutch brake valve to pieces. The double half clutch gets the best result with no damage. Hope that helps, John@driveit
Eighteen Speed !? Is that ! ? Six Low ! Six Medium ! Six High !? ( The BUTTON ! ) That is ! ( The Same Gear Lever ) or Nine Low !? Nine High ! ? Unsure !? And Also Reverse !? One only !? Or More !? John !
Hi, you have crawl and reverse, then the standard H pattern, 1, 2, 3 and 4 low range, they can all be split. Then high range 5,6,7 and 8, they can be split to. So basically its 16 gears plus crawl and reverse. Don't worry to much about splitting while getting used to it though..next video will cover that in more detail
Trucks have that much torque these days you only need half the gears and skip shift. Just matching the gear to engine revs these days needs a few runs around the block first. But your right you never forget.
Thanks for your teaching you are a good teacher.i want you to teach from dashboard to engaging gears.
Thanks for watching
Your explanation is very simple and very clear and helpful. Its like I can just hope onto the seat and drive, thanks so much!
Thank you
This is the best video for road ranger gearbox tutorial I've seen on the net so far , great work guys
Thank you! Much appreciated, not easy to put together but well worth it, if it helps one person out we are happy, thanks, John@driveit

Great video. Thanks. Upshifting is not too bad, but downshifting is the tricky one to learn.
That's the tricky one alright, just takes time 👍
Thanks for the driving lesson ,

Good video, brought back memories of learning the road Ranger , double clutch with a patient driving instructor.
Very good teaching
Thank you 👍
Very interesting I have in joyed your explanation
Great video I like how you show the foot work separated from the hand work but i wish you had a separate camera to also show the revs cluster
Thanks, had 4x cameras and different microphones running as it was at times..
Thanks so much for sharing 🤚

Allison automatic is a lot simpler lol.
I have heard of them being combined with a joey box.
Good beginner's rundown of what these do.
Awesome lesson and thank you for sharing your video 👍👍
Thanks heaps, and very welcome, lots more videos to come

Really good bloke :) Well worded and said a lot of things I forgot.😁 I'm going looking for part two :)
Very good
If you can drive a road rager competently you can pretty much drive anything.
Clutch to neutral clutch to gear copy that
Double clutch my boi
Great video cheers
How do you use the splitter on the modern 13 and 18 sp.
I drive a manual car, I drove HR truck in the bosses yard. I got from low gear to first and 2nd gear. But hopely with all this infomation I can do it
thank you

How about explaining how to use PTO etc
Hi there, what are you wanting to know?
You engage the crawler and the reverse while in low range or high range
why don’t you float gears?
Thanks for watching. This is a video to help out all abilities. 👍
How about using the.pto and difflock

Hi, splitter forward as in "high split" is always a good place to start. We will do a video on splitters in the future.
Now I can finnaly drive an 18 speed 😎🤝😎
Well done!
Good vid.
Thank you 👍
Carry onn brother 👍👌

Cant seem to find part 2 tho?!

Have you for any advice for road positioning, I’m having trouble staying in my lane.. the truck I’m learning in is like old as…

I never use splitter for first 4 low
Hows that for multitasking..
Haha yeah your not wrong, wasn't easy with cameras and mics plus trying to drive....
When you get that right then drive it without the clutch after take off.
Always did
Wens best time or wen do u use the crawl gear
Hi, normally only if you were fully loaded on a hill start or steep job site, or getting towed out from being stuck for example. Its a pretty low ratio so not used much at all
Imma gonna buy me a truck now!
BETTER ! ROBB ! THE ! BANK !!! FIRST !!!
Ahh shit yeah.Go out & make heaps of money.
All the trucks should be automatic like late model buses so there is less stress and safer driving for all the truck drivers.
And remember. Don’t put the clutch to the floor when changing gears but at what do I know lol
It was a really helpful video. But I would've liked less music to hear the revs your talking about
Never been able to drive a rr with a clutch always without a clutch
Who says you can’t split downshift? Like you say, you have to match the revs and maximise the exhaust brake
Hi there, it can be done but normally needing a full gear on the way down helps with the engine braking. Thanks for the comment
Ya to deadly cuz 😎
Bout time some1 put up tbis vid..KA PAI
Cheers mate, feel free to share around 👍
I hear you, it's just not going in.
I don't understand why the double clutch

I feel like you could teach a 6month course in 10 mins.
Yeah. Such an easy listen
shout out to dale
Good video But… the music is no good I want to hear the motor revs and sounds.
You gotta match your engine speed to your road speed and you will be sweet

If you aren't doing your license, maybe try find a video explaining how the actual gearbox works and will help you better understand what's going on.
pushing clutch in way too far
Clutch is not needed after pulling away
I've watched this. I can drive trucks now. fight me.
Easy compared to an Eaton twin splitter
Drove a Mack Midliner and an ERF, with the 12speed twin splitter.
Now there's a fantastic gearbox loved them
So basically the same as my car then, except your splitter is easier to use I have 2 gear sticks instead.
Lol
Lol ??
No clutch only time you use the clutch is to take off before I get judged yes I can drive a road ranger I own a kenworth k200
And that is the correct way in my opinion
Worse,Truck to car ,i get missus pik mi up .algd.
The Roadranger is an outdated piece of s*** gearbox I will stick to my V8 Scania
Its ok if you can't drive a roadranger.
