A beautiful sport car, actually overshadowed in its class by Dino 308 and 308gtb mostly because of the prancing horse emblem on the hood.
I was used to drive a preowned 3000 Merak with upgraded chain tensioners(distribution was quite a weak point on early production cars).
After such upgrade it really turned into a reliable day driver you could safely floor, no problems.
To be fair it was not as fast as a 308 yet not outperformed on open roads. The SS had a far better dashboard besides offering some 30 hp more.Great styling penned by Giorgio Giugiaro.

@@Tommyblueeyes I've never done a TH-cam vid but is a good idea. It's getting engine and suspension work done ATM so once its back I'll have a go.

Nice job guys. I can comment on these a bit as I recently sold a 76 308GTB I owned for 9 years, and I currently have a 74 911 twin plug hot rod and a December build 1980 Euro spec Merak SS with no Citroen hydraulics as per factory of this very late build. I rebuilt the engines on all of these and improved them (high compression, cams, porting, dyno to jet carbs correctly etc) so they have a good bit more poke. The 911 is a pure sports car but I cannot drive it for a length of time. The 308 was great but it sounded like a hot 4 cylinder Honda, and the handling was good but it sort of felt sluggish unless the engine was constantly revved to kingdom come.
The Merak was a car I did not want to buy, but I did at the urging from someone I knew and trusted so I jumped on a great example. Very glad I did. The Merak eats up the miles and is a more balanced car than the 911, easier to have fun driving and not worry I'm going to lose the rear end, and the center of gravity is lower than a 308 as the engine is not mounted on top of the gearbox. The engine is just fabulous, has more instantly available torque, which I think has a lot to do with the extremely heavy boat anchor of a crankshaft in these things. The torque makes it feel quicker than the 308. It's finally getting its due these days as it's well deserved. I call it Maserati's Dino as they really hit it right with this car, especially the late examples with no hydraulics.

Good post and glad you are enjoying your Merak. I’ve owned my 77 Merak for over 30 years (same colour as the one in this video) and plan to have it recommissioned to get it back on the road in the coming months.
I was interested in your comment about it being more balanced than your 911 and worrying less about losing the rear end. My Merak has got the Citroen hydraulics and driving it in the wet was always a bit of an adventure (they could have replaced the brake pedal with an on/off switch!).

Mid-engined Italians? Have you considered trying to secure a drive of the genuine, one and only X1/9 Stradale? I believe that it was up for auction. However, I’m not sure if it has sold and, if so, if it’s still in Australia. Iconic. Rarer than rocking horse faeces.

Mine was lime green , a complete mechanical disaster area , required major spanner spinning and so much body fixing and bashing.
But once done, it was like gliding along on a turbocharged magic carpet up in the Lancashire and Yorkshire hills at night.
22 years old and bangin' the back roads firca few months , then swapeed it for a fiat!..... 131 super mirafiori racing supercharged!
Oh, my 20s were full of smilely times!
Kids today really are ginna miss out.

Both the Delorean and the Merak were designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro ;)

I luckily had a long ownership experience of both cars,Merak 3000 and 911 2400/2700/3000 so let me say that in full fairness 911 was in most respects a better car as far as mere performance is concerned.
I truly was fond of the Merak allure, however that's basically my personal opinion on daily driving basis.Possibly the late SS evolution had a significantly improved engine alas I never had any chance to test drive it.
