  • In this episode Dr. Chaffee and Simon chat with Dr. Max Gulhane who is a young Australian doctor on a mission to help people go from surviving to thriving through proper human nutrition. Dr. Gulhane has been on his own health journey. He hit rock bottom with severe acne in his early 20s while on a plant based diet and after being prescribed accutane by a doctor, who didn’t ask him about his diet, he started to question things.
    Dr. Gulhane has been down the rabbit hole of nutrition, government guidelines, big pharma and big food and is now an advocate for a low carb or ideally a carnivore diet. He helps his patients with a nutrition first approach and has a particular focus on visceral fat as he believes it is both the outcome and the cause of many modern diseases.
    Dr. Gulhane is also a big supporter of regenerative agriculture and hosts his own podcast called the Regenerative Health Podcast.

    Hello from California. I’m ex-plant based. Survived 3 years until I couldn’t do it anymore. Muscle pains were horrible. Bloating. Gained weight. Acne. In my 40s.

    Dr Gulhane put our modern health system in a nutshell when he said that the current system can get metabolically sick people to a survival level, but not to a thriving level.

    Dr Jason Fung (nephrologist) would be a great addition to your podcast, as well. He focused on getting his patients better after following the medical guidelines and growing tired of hearing the foot hit the bucket after he cut it off. He tried many different things to help his patients reverse diabetes, but found fasting to be the most effective.

    Having those conversations with your medical peers hopefully means that when they see patients who mention carnivore or low carb they will be more willing to support their patients eating this way.

    I am 66, carnivore/ketovore for around 10 years. I am so desperate to get my husband to follow this woe but his carb addiction dominates him. He has hypertension meds and proton pump inhibitors but I managed to stop him beginning the statin he was prescribed. Even if I was able to persuade him to commit to carnivore/ketovore and he went to his doctor to monitor his need for the hypertensive meds can you imagine the response he would most likely get? In a five minute consult the doctor would probably lay waste to my years of work trying to steer him right. 😢

    Just a thought...maybe a new profession would be a reverse doctor...I refuse to go to the doctor and get tests done because I know if anything is wrong....I won't agree with the prescription treatment. And people already taking mess needs a professional to help them get off of them.

      Same here, hate going but I do when I want a blood check up, I just ignore the whole statin/cholesterol bla bla, and my current Dr just leaves it alone now cause he knows my reply to it lol😅

    Awesome. It would be great to have an episode for emergency services employees who work days nights and who are unable to have the regular sleep we should be having. advice on how to stay as healthy and as fit as possible whilst working these jobs would be great.
    I am hoping to have confirmation of being accepted into firefighter training in the next few weeks

    Agree, also during weight training you don't really burn much calories. Carnivore, low carb diet is the major factor of losing weight and burning fat and calories.

    Wow! Doc, maybe you should start mentioning Paleo Valley beef sticks instead of Carnivore bars! I just went to the web site as it piqued my interest- until I saw that whopping $175 for 12 of them! 400 calories of food x12 for$175! That's RIDICULOUS! Who the heck can afford THAT!???! Paleo Valley beef sticks are grass fed, organic, and DELICIOUS! And at around $2, MUCH more affordable! I often eat 2 or 3 for a meal replacement and I'm totally happy! You can't eat McDonald's that cheap, lol!😂 I also have a lot of food sensitivities and they don't bother me AT ALL!😊❤

    just a quick word, and carefull about what numbers somethimes mean.
    Google will tell you:
    The most recent Census of Agriculture reported 233,770 poultry farms in the United States in 2012. In 2014, the U.S. poultry industry produced 8.54 billion broilers, 99.8 billion eggs, and 238 million turkeys.
    and a 1000 of those egg/chicken farms to burn down, is actually not that many... i know it sound crazy, but you really need to get all numbers before going into panic mode about supply.
    And honestly - if people start eating the right way (carnivore, of cause) then the supply demand will go up for beef, and eggs - so this will cause the farmers to get better payed for their products as well - of cause it easier to deliever for McD or what ever - but if they get the right pay for it, trust me, the farmers will switch for it.
    So start dealing with the local butcher and see the results.... if all was doing it, wait, see! :)

    I've been at this for a week and a half, I'm strictly meat and water. I've had some weird effects, but nothing major. For example, I'm always thirsty, my lips taste salty??? Once I passed my last carb meal, I've gone less, but very loose and minimal. However, my energy levels are much higher, my mood is better, and water is much more refreshing. Is there anyone else else with similar effects?

      @catsrus2890 Thank you, I haven't drank this much water since my time in the Army. I don't get an upset stomach per se, it's more like a quick bout of loose stool, which quickly passes, and I'm back to normal. No upset stomach or cramping. Must be the adjustment phase.       Just a thought..
      One mistake new carnivores make is a too-even fat to protein ratio. You don't need to calculate this (that's ridiculous, imo), but be sure the majority of calories is fat. Fat trepidation is a thing through decades of bad advice.

      There is an adaptation phase. Sticking to beef, or mostly beef, will help you figure out satiation and protein/ fat macros. Elimination may be less frequent but should be easy- not greasy, or dry and hard. Remember, your entire digestive system has been pushing out bulky fiber, and fermentation in your colon. It will adjust. Make sure you salt food to taste and drink water, but not a lot of water with meals.

    I was a vegan/vegetarian for 2 decades. I collected dozens of medical conditions and a nasty collective microbiome. My first colonoscopy allowed me to eat meat again. My 3rd, prompted me into an allergy elimination diet and i accidentally fell into a meat based diet. 2 decades of researching health and nutrition, i was so scared. For several months. I kept losing weight and inflammation as long as i stopped reintroducing fruits and veggies and meds back in. I'm reactive to the potato starch in tablets. So i don't know how to get back on thyroid meds. And with several severe injuries, I'm reactive to nsaids and narcotics, so I'm told I'm self medicating. Which is what keeps me from going full Lion Diet. My sugar binging addiction is better as i have recently added more fat. I still can't see free lollipops and not binge eat. What do i do about other addictions?

      That's really great that you've been able to come away from a vegan diet after that long and regain your health. I'm very happy for you!
      Addiction can be very difficult, but like all addictions they do go away; generally after about 2 weeks. So if you can fight through until then, you should be good. A good way of combating cravings is to eat more fat meat, as sometimes the cravings are just your brain's way of telling you that you're hungry

    Dear Anthony, recently I introduced carnivore life style into my life. Till this time I had 4 meals per day but since food volume dropped on this diet I had to reduce meals to 3 per day to feel satisfied. The question is whether 3 meals is enough while I regulary lift and trying to build some lean muscle mass?

      The number of meal does not play a role in strenght workout. 1 meal or 6 is even, so eat when you're hungry and stop when you're not anymore. Anyway using carnivore diet you will have all the proteine needed, don't worry

      I'm a tradesman, age 58, on my feet and working hard all day, in excellent health and strength. I eat one meal a day (carnivore) in the evening. I almost never feel hungry before 5pm.
      My point is *not* that you should only eat one meal a day. Instead, my point is that you do not need a specific number of meals in order to get what your body needs. You should reject the common knowledge on the subject, and experiment to find what works best for you. For me, I feel sluggish if I eat any substantial amount during the day. That has always been true, but it wasn't until I was in my 40's that it occurred to me that I didn't have to eat 3 meals per day. So I stopped eating breakfast, and immediately started feeling better (more "peppy") during the day. A couple years later it occurred to me that I was only eating lunch out of habit, not because I was feeling hungry. So I stopped having lunch, switched to one large meal in the evening, and I've been doing that for over 10 years with zero negative consequences for health, weight, muscle, sleep, digestion, etc. Again, I'm not promoting OMAD, I'm promoting an open mind and experimentation.

    All you doctors (especially male drs.) may have not considered this fact I saw decades ago when I was first in college-we females who spoke together about surviving childhood sexual abuse and other abuse…were without exception that I have ever see-all overweight from stress/hormones/self comforting with food. I mean I have seen a few who managed to not be extremely overweight (I am 61) but without exception not a single one was slim-or even underweight. The stress connection to weight is huge-no pun intended-humongous, enormous-ok maybe a bit of a pun but still it always struck me as sad tragic- that the little girls who suffered so much were then stuck inside the fat trap of being unacceptable in society as well which is just as devastating in it’s own way. Please remember FAT IS A SYMPTOM-it causes other symptoms but be careful not to victim blame the viscerally fat people. Genetics-Epigenetics-stress-hormones-pain-medications-smells of foods, physical limitations, Down’s Syndrome, poverty, viruses, and hundreds more things are CAUSAL FACTORS.

      That's a great point and very relevant. My approach (borrowed from dr Lucy Burns) is to ocnsider PHYSIOLOGY (food diet, light diet) and PSYCHOLOGY - which is everything you mention. Often people can intellectually understand what they need to do from a dietary POV, but emotional factors and deeply buried trauma can prevent them from implementing these changes.     I'm 6 months pregnant and keen to try carnivore. Is it ok if I start now or should I wait to give birth first? Worried the adaptation/ keto flu phase might be too much for a pregnant woman to handle. I can only find 1 testimony online of a woman who went carnivore while pregnant and had great results. But she was 9 months already and almost ready to give birth

      I would eat carnivore in your situation.
      Your baby needs a lot of nutrients, animal fats.
      Fatty fish, like fresh sardines, mackerel.
      Eggs from a person who has free range chickens eating everything and wirms, insects in plain air.
      Meat, organs from all kind of animals, bone broth.
      Veggies with very low oxalates, lectins.
      2 nuts a day ( each day another sort of nut ).
      1 egg a day.
      No grains, cereals, pasta, bread, sugar, sweets, sweeteners.
      No fancy organic hype products.
      No processed foods.
      No packaged foods.
      No packaged drinks.
      No canned food.
      No high processed oils, margarine > no canola oil, corn, soya, rapeseed oil and so on.
      Only real olive oil. But most olive oil is mixed with other oils. Real unfiltered 1st pressed and cold pressed olive oil is very expensive and allmost not to find. Not even in europe.
      Never buy olive oils, coconut in plastic containers. Only in glass bottles.
      No alcohol.
      Plain water.
      Celtic sea salt.
      Lard, ghee butter, grass fed butter, organic coconut oil.
      Kefir, sauerkraut.
      Do not use chemical cleaners in the house.
      Do not use chemical air fresheners, perfumes, deo, shampoo, bath pearls, shower products, creams, meds, synthetic vitamins, coloring your hair, hair products, no commercial toothpaste.
      Use instead organic coconut oil for skin and hair. Organic soap like making it yourself. Deo> make it yourself.
      See organic ways to make your own soap, cream, deo, toothpaste.
      Listen to relaxing beautiful classical music. Relaxing nature music.
      Your fetus reacts to all nouces, sounds in your belly.
      Your baby feels your stress and receives your stress hormones.
      Shower your stress off, when you feel stressed! Music heals your bloodpressure and brain waves!
      Good luck lady and be friendly and compassionate towards yourself ( and your baby ).
      Please touch your baby in your belly, talk friendly and speak to your baby to show your love. They 'feel' it and hear your voice and other voices around you and their energy and yours.
      Sleep with your baby and caress and kiss him/her. Breastfeeding will be also easer like that. Do not take meds, sleeping pills and so on. Do not vaccinate yourself during pregnancy and your baby. Give bresstfeeding instead and eat very nutrient dense and healthy.
      Walk in nature.
      A baby is happy with a small kitten or puppy dog as a soft compagnion for life. Never leave them unsupperviced.
      But growing up together with a puppy cat and puppy dog is a gift.
      Teach the baby to be soft to kitty/puppy dog to socialize to be gentle and compassionate towards an animal and later towards your next baby and other children, yourself...

      Read Frederick Leboyer on babies and so on.
      Read the book THE CONTINUUM COMPLEX, by Jean Liedloff.
      Read a book how to sleep with babies, children ans how to wear a baby on your body!

      I would ditch any highly processed foods, grains and sugar. I would increase red meat and fat. But I wouldn’t do a drastic change in your condition.

      Most people ( like me ) started on keto with around 20 gr of carbs a day , after 6 months I started ditching carb and now I am mostly carnivore , many other know that started keto are now carnivore

    Question: if it's Visceral fat as a marker, I have eating tons of carbs in the past and jog 20 minutes a day and lift weights. I have the fattest tummy, and can get lean on low arb but also on high carb. Plus I have seen carnivore people who definitely have Visceral fat. So it's not the diet, it's just "don't have Visceral fat correct? Want to be clear, when I follow a low fat diet and do some cardiovascular 20 min exercise (not excess) I have no Visceral fat. If I eat low carb high fat I have flat tummy with no cardio... it's when I combine higherish fat with carbs I ever notice a problem. However I did once increase fruit alot, for the first time I got Visceral fat and thar was low fat high fruit diet. My triglycerides went up. But I can eat lean meat and potatoes all day without added butter creams ect and stay lean. However I find I feel more clear and lasting energy with low carbs higher fat. But either diets I can have low Visceral fat. 😊

    Love these convos. I want to create a reality show "Carnivore Jail" and show the world, in an engaging manner, how they can regain their lives by changing their way of eating to carnivore. It's a hard-sell to many because of the false narrative with which they've been inundated but the message might more palatable if presented in a reality show fashion like Carnivore Jail: Fake police arrest offenders of eating garbage. They get sentenced by a fake judge to 30-90 days in Carnivore Jail where it's actually more like a resort, lol, with a chef, personal trainer, light therapy, and other things that might help their health. I.jist need some people.on board to help. I'm paying someone to create a nice website...

      I would just say it would be great to add focus on good quality and regenerative agri methods/farming. And have an MD explaining why the contestants are losing weight and feeling better and farmers explaining food quality and methods etc. Good luck. Look fwrd to it.

    Hey Doc, what are your thoughts on super greens powders? Only once a week or just a couple of times a month?. I've been eating beef lamb Chicken and seafood with some dairy and no Sugar or artificial sweeteners. Would you advise against the super green powder?

      I dont think you need them, and I wouldnt use them myself. You get the bad with the good on those things, so if you are eating properly, the bad outweighs the good.

    Great talk. Disagree with the sort of holding the exercise back idea and starting with diet. I think it’s fine to go for both but is entirety based on the individual. Also, exercise itself can help to address the psychological underpinnings which may have led to the issue in the first place. It’s always dependent on the person in front of you.

    Why do carnivores only eat herbaceous animals and never other carnivores? How is it that the strongest animal on the farm is the horse and the Ox, herb eater. the most fierce is the dog, carnivore the smartest is the omnivorous pig? And the very best meat to eat is the squab which is granivores Cheers interesting conversation although it sounds like a wealthy man's diet.

      Animals in the wild eat what they're supposed to. Dolphins are probably smarter than pigs and they're carnivore. Some people eat dolphins, shark, alligator...all eat other animals instead of plants.

      I'm saving money on Carnivore. Vegetables, fruit and junk are very expensive in Australia. I can buy a weeks worth of meat, cream and eggs for $60. A weeks worth of bread, veges, fruit, snacks, sauces, soft drinks, take away junk etc etc had me spending hundreds.

    Minute 23 Max talks about allowing the healing. I love this approach. I have been carnivore for 7 months now after being vegan for 30 years!!! yes, 30 years. I spent the first 6 months of carnivore, strict carnivore, sitting and thinking and feeling my whole body heal. My painful IBS, my severe digestion problems, my menopausal symptoms and my chronic knee pain which I had had since the age of 4. Last month, after 6 months on carnivore I decided that it was time to start exercising. I felt like it. I started gently running ever other day and its wonderful. I feel strong and well, and guess what? My knees still don't hurt me. The healing carnivore life.

      I've been clean keto for 4 years.
      2nd year began having sporadic episodes of severe gut pain and diarrhea. These episodes occurred more often over time until last year, it reached daily. I went 100% Carnivore in an effort to get healthy again. This has helped me a lot but at this point I still can't veer away from only meat or I'll "pay for it". I am tired of only meat! Was never a fan of meat. I still don't feel my best by any means. Have had comp. stool testing, CT with contrast, fecal calprotectin test (slightly elevated), and up next is a colonoscopy in May and a SIBO breath test in June. It's been over a year now of almost daily belly pain. I've become reclusive and fight depression. I had a grand total of 6 months on keto when I was at a "high" and felt so much younger than my 66 year self. Then it all crashed. Any ideas why?? Some internet friends who are also on this health journey suggest oxalates. I have indeed seen many signs of ox dumping...and eliminating them has promoted healing.
      Would love to hear your opinion.
      BTW, I'm currently reading the book TOXIC SUPERFOODS by Sally K Norton.
      P.S. I'm currently weaning off Effexor (antidepressant) and have been on a super slow tapering off for 3 years. Connection? 🤔

    I’m 47 and have been on an animal based diet with some fruit for the past 4 years. Mostly steak, ground beef, organs meats, raw milk, raw butter, raw kefir, and raw honey. I am ripped to shreds and very muscular. At 47! I do lift weights and exercise cardio 5 days a week as well. I’ll never change again. I’m very happy and energetic. My mission is to wake people up now.

      For me I could have saved years of unecessary topical treatments, oral antibiotics and isotretinoin if I had been advised early on to avoid carbs, sugar, fruit, dairy. Which is precisely the advice I offer my patients now who are interested in holistic approach to their acne.

      I was vegan for 5 years and I also got severe acne - I still struggle with healing it, but Carnivore helped so much already! I'm 30 yo, 1-year carnivore (only meat, eggs, no dairy) and I feel better than when I was 16yo :D Finally, I know how it is to feel healthy, to feel great in my body. I don't think I ever felt that way since I was a fat kid with chronic illnesses, constant fatigue, and depression. Now I'm thriving :)

    I was hard core healthy keto for 1.3 years to regulate my insulin resistance. It worked! But then I developed a weird idiopathic Angioedema. I went carnivore. Lost 5 pounds that I couldn’t shake on keto (not a big deal went from 125 to 120 lbs). I feel really good on carnivore. Mostly ribeye roast steaks and eggs. I do have coffee with cream.
    MOST importantly l, my blood
    Glucose is better now than with healthy keto. When I ate “healthy keto” I still had spikes. With carnivore, I have an homeostasis that really doesn’t budge. Yes once a month I have a small French fry. Blood glucose
    Doesn’t budge.
    And I LOVE steak why didn’t I just stick to what Ioved years ago? Figuring it out at 50. :)

    Glucose would spike when eating “too
    Much protein”. Weird I can eat a 16oz ribeye and my blood

    Barely budges but on healthy keto, I had a spike?

    I wish I could get more black folk to hear the message about exercise. I’m black so I can say this. We emphasize way to much on exercise and not enough on what we eat. Way too much cardio & don’t get me wrong I love rebounding. But some cardio rebounding and weightlifting is more beneficial. The weightlifting has me feeling so strong. I do it all at home.
    BTW took me a year after going carnivore before I had the strength to exercise. With a crappy diet & bad metabolic health I don’t see how people have the energy and will to workout. I didn’t.

      I wish we could hear about this. While I don’t agree that the emphasis is on cardio, I have noticed how veganism/alkaline diet is being pushed today.

    I have resolved most of my health issues with keto and carnivore and am now focusing on the "thriving" side and helping others. It's wonderful to get to this point. So glad to hear his holistic vision. We do indeed need to move beyond into regenerative agriculture. The conversation here has touched me deeply.

    An easy way to meet and support local ranchers is to go to Farmer's Markets. Last weekend we drove to a farmer's market in a neighboring town where we met 3 regenerative cattle ranchers. One of them, as it turned out, is less than 30 miles from my home.
    In addition to the beef ranchers, there were a couple pig farmers, as well as people selling fresh eggs, goat cheeses, homemade bone broth.
