  • I'm a philosopher, a mystic, and a magician--but those things don't fit together as neatly as you might expect. In this video, I talk through a fundamental incompatibility between philosophy's demands for rigorous reasoning and mysticism's need to suspend reason in favor of direct ecstatic experience of the divine. And just to top it all off, I discuss how magic fits in with the two.

I found this video really confusing. I've been practicing BTW for many years, and my understanding of philosophy (I don't have the education you do in it) and psychology (more educated in this realm) do influence my practice. I understand the symbolism and how those symbols have connections to philosophy and psychology and how they influence our minds and thoughts through ritual. I agree that there is a need to slip into "magical thinking." But the way you separate the two feels very disjointed to me.

I watched Esotericism in Philosophy on the Esoterica TH-cam channel after this and he sums up what I was thinking better than I did, "There clearly exists a mystical, initiatory, and esoteric aspect at the very root of Western Philosophy itself. Both logic and mysticism seem to exist side by side at this period with no apparent contradiction or tension. We, as modern people, insert that tension, or worse, just ignore or suppress the reality of our intellectual and spiritual history. And worse, we do it to our own intellectual and spiritual detriment." th-cam.com/video/qQ84delhpuw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=7cahSnpdclya1cLo
