    The unbeaten performance of sonata 2. I was hooked right away when I heard it in the car radio by total chance

    I usually do not comment videos, but for this one I just had to. First of all: what a brilliant channel. I have just discovered it and the content found here is gold. Thank you. Second of all: this specific post brought back so many precious memories, it felt appropriate to share them here - if only to make an other person smile at the thought of these stories.
    Hamelin played the same Kapustin Sonata at a concert I attended 20 years ago in a packed-up church in Mascouche, Québec. I was 15 years old at the time and had discovered Marc-André a few months prior, thanks to a neighbor who lent me his recording of Alkan's Concerto for Solo Piano - it was a radio broadcast, on a tape cassette. I was very impressed by his virtuosity and I went to the concert with the hope of exchanging a few words with the man and maybe, since I was some kind of a fanboy at the time, get him to sign a score I owned.
    I showed up there 30 minutes before the concert, and there he was. Idly standing on the front square of the church, smoking a cigarette. I approached him and said hi. He nodded. He was very affable. I can not remember a word of that conversation (I was so nervous), but I did ask him if he would mind signing the score I had brought - it was Liszt's First Piano Concerto. He looked at it and said, with the kind of humor my former younger self could not decipher: 'Oh, do you truly deem me worthy of this?' (but in French). The rest is also a blur. I obviously said thank you and then there I was, inside the church, ready to listen.
    The concert was intense and the people were very focused. The program was both sober and wild - Shostakovich, Scriabin, Medtner and finally the elusive Kapustin, whom no one had ever heard about, to close the deal. As soon as Hamelin started playing the Sonata, everyone went completely silent. A wave of excitement and disbelief flooded the whole building. It was a warm July evening. You could 'feel' the crowd. Everything was electric. I started noticing people around me, staring at each others and at strangers like me, their eyes clearly saying: 'This shit is insane. Am I Right?'
    The performance ended with what has to be the wildest roar I have ever heard in classical music concert. The crowd went mental. The whole thing was almost too much. He then proceeded to finish us with Kapustin's 7th Concert Etude and a dazzling rendition of Massenet's 'La Valse Folle'.
    I saw him after the concert and asked him if after all this, he would grant me the honor of seeing play his own cadenza on Liszt's Second Hungarian Rhapsody, up close. He said he had to decline, because he had too many people to meet (he was indeed surrounded), but told me 'If we ever meet again, I promise I will play it for you.'
    It has been 20 years. And since Marc-André is known for his insane memory, I am pretty sure if our paths ever cross again, he would remember... and then play the whole damn thing without even breaking a sweat.

      Marc Andre is such an amazing person. I met him before his rehearsal and he sat to sign and to talk with me and my friends. The day of the concert we were taking after this performances (he played Grieg's piano concerto).
      And daaaamn, he's such an amazing person. I really would like to meet him again.

    Kapustin's piano style reminds a little of Art Tatum's stride style in the sense that it is so dense, or complex, there's so much nervous
    energy there

    No mortal human being can play the fourth movement as fast as Hamelin does, but then Hamelin is not human so that explains it all! I have often wondered what Hamelin's fellow Canadian pianist, the legendary Glenn Gould, would have done with Kapustin's music, especially this sonata, had he known of any of his oeuvre and had lived long enough to perform it.

    Fantástica Sonata del Maestro Nikolai Kapustin (R.I.P.)! Bendiciones!!!

    This music is not for large halls and not for playing at so much fast tempos.
    Large hall reverb blends the end of one harmony and beginning of the next one and fast tempo makes the harmonies to flicker.
    Also a lack of the steady rhythm at extremely fast tempos spoils syncopated notes.

  • @PavleCajic

    Sad that this performance sacrifices rhythmic groove and clarity for speed. I wish classically trained pianists would listen more carefully to Kapustin's own recordings. For example, Kapustin swings the second theme of the first movement ever so slightly. I've rarely heard this in other performances. In fact, if you listen carefully, Kapustin swings all the quavers very very subtly, and you can feel it! I think ignoring the rhythmic practices of jazz loses a lot from this music!!! (Of course there are many things to enjoy in this performance but I am missing the groove so badly!!!)

    • @tarikeld11
      @tarikeld11 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Seems like I'm not the only one missing the swing at Kapustin's quavers and complaining about everyone playing Kapustin faster than himself. This work is difficult enough to listen to - playing it even faster doesn't work musically.

    • @kx3kx3
      @kx3kx3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree and at the same time, I don't want Hamelin to play like Kapustin, otherwise I would listen to Kapustin! Hamelin has a different way to see this music and the fact that his rendition keeps this level of musicality makes Kapustin shine even more!
