Excellent analysis Max. As an Irish fan I really enjoyed this game and was more relaxed knowing that Ireland had already won the 6 Nations. This was really on a knife edge, a bounce of the ball could have decided this one. Congratulations to France and congratulations to England for providing an edge of the seat game.
Crazy breakdown - it was really as simple as England literally threw the game away by conceding 14 points direct from our lineout ... Epic game, but France were clinical to capitalise on England errors.
I thought France were excellent and deserved the win, getting back to previous playing style from maybe 3 three years ago. France being the best out of all teams. It’s great to have them back in form. England have really come on now and played really well. It should be an interesting tournament next year.
Well it depends on what you mean by "should have". Meters gained: F: 458, E: 289. Turnovers won: F: 4, E: 3. Penalties: F: 5, E:10. Tackles: F: 77, E: 140. Possession: F: 59%. Territory: F: 52%. Attacking minutes: F: 20,4, E: 14,8. Rucks won: F: 91, E: 49. In what parallel universe "should" England have won with those stats ?
@RugbywithMax great vid thank you. I believe the final penalty was on Ben Earl for a no arms tackle, rather than Marler for tackle off the ball as you mentioned?
@@thereader6667 indeed. A shame, but ultimately no complaints. Great match, and congrats to France. At least we played positively for much of the match and have something to build on. Even if we will get humped in NZ lol
As an Englishman, it was a great game of rugby. But yes, we choked. We have a serious problem with finishing in big games when we are in the lead, (RC semi final, nearly letting Wales beat us, now France) that said I have huge belief in this team and they can overcome it. We need to get better at managing those last 2 minutes when we are in front.
France did not play together a lot more than England did, with Dupont, Ntamack and Jalibert missing, Ramos is yet again moving out of his 15 position playing along new 9 Le Garrec, with Danty also missing with a red card, for whatever crazy reason Galthié chose to maintain Fickou at 13 with newbie Depoortère at 12 when for club Bordeaux, Depoortère normally plays at 13 along Moefana at 12... it was a complete brainfart from Galthié yet again selecting new players out of position. Leo Barré was also new at 15. It means France is playing newbies and players out of position in all tactical key positions. Keep in mind that half of France coaching staff has also departed after the World Cup, so France was pretty even with England. Now having said that there are departments where France has a lot of work to do: - defense: Shaun Edwards tight defense has been crumbling down and the centre pairing of Fickou-Depoortère certainly did not help the cause - attack: France dominated England in pretty much all departments but the scrums and should have easily scored 2 or 3 more tries in the first half which means they require twice as much efforts as their opponents to score less tries (England 4 tries - France 3) - high balls: bare Ramos les bleus are shocking as usual and seem to ignore the basics, the new staff needs to address it. Overall I think Steve Borthwick took a lot more from their defeat to the Boks in the 1/2 than Fabien Galthie did from their defeat to the Boks in the 1/4 and that's something to give Borthwick credit for. Borthwick I believe understand better why the Boks won three games in a row by the smaller of margin: the REFEREE, they must have bought him (punt intended) but not only that, France again dominated the Boks in almost every departments from the get go and the Boks did very little but feed on mistakes and create these mistakes by going... beyond physically speaking. England is learning that again, Borthwick knows you have to flirt with infringement and even infringe to win World Cups. At the last World Cup, the teams that dominated in attack were penalised by the referees, the teams that did little but defend were advantaged. We have never seen that before, but Borthwick took note. You have to do little but take points every time you do whether with the boot or with the ball in hands. You have to be cynical.
I strongly disagree with you that England should have won this game! England COULD have won this game for sure! Following the English momentum achieved with a 21-0 [1 try before the end of 1st half and two at the beginning of the 2nd half] England lost control of their momentum and let France come back with two great tries. Additionally France’s discipline was world class [only 5 fouls conceded against 10 for England ]. France had the mental toughness and strength to get back into the lead! Again, the French pack, in the last 5 minutes of the game, made the difference, and ia one of the reasons why the last penalty kick was awarded and converted by Ramos! We also know that teams ending up an international game with 5 penalties [or less] conceded are more likely to win an international rugby game.
There is a difference between should and could. England lost this game because they overthrew the ball at a line out and France took advantage by using their feet and scored. Oh, wait a minute, England lost because etc etc. Yes, there is no such thing as should have won a game, could have is the word. England definitely could have won the game, but we didn’t. A huge improvement and they must take the positives and learn so we win next time.
Really good analysis & incredibly entertaining. I'll be looking in at more of your videos. Do you do predictive analysis too? Be keen to get your thoughts on the upcoming AB v Eng Tests.....
As an Englishman, this is clearly an improvement even from last year where the 1 point game against SA in the semi was a bit of a flash in the pan. What frustrated me was the 3rd French try where we just threw the ball to them from the line out. You don't win games if you gift points to the opposition.
Rubbish! The late penalty was against no 8 (Ben Earl), not Marler. The referee was heard on commentary to ask for the player's number, and he confirmed it verbally. And there was no slow motion replay on French TV!
Thanks for the Laugh Max. Love your opening Statement. much maligned Ford managed the game brilliantly. Ear's penalty at the end for not wrapping was dubious but your shit stirring is top notch.😝😝
Maybe my comment last time wasn't quite correct. The problem with England is that once there is hype behind them they ultimately can't deliver. They defeated New Zealand at the 2019 semi finals, Could not keep it up against South Africa. Were leading South Africa last year in the semi, yeah The Ox and RG Snyman had something to say about that. Beat Ireland by a point, couldn't keep it up against France. To be Fair now, it wasn't a one sided game for France, However France still managed to out muscle them
@@BrickoligistAnimations how are the Welsh involved in this conversation lol they’ve just won the wooden spoon! The term choking in sport is usually used when an expected and dominant team fails to rise to the big occasion. As someone else said, England actually found a way back into the game where France had been pretty dominant. Feels like a bit of clickbait title to suggest England lost this game because they chocked
Mate, story of nowadays Britain: "we should have won...", as opposed to "we fell a little short of delivering....". Blaming it on the ref, bad luck, adversary's foul play....is not how you move on and improve. When it's never about you, what's the point about changing? Swallow it and crack on.
i don't think the general narrative here is "we should have won". Disappointed to lose, yes, but no complaints. We played well. They were just a bit better. It's all good.

England should have one? Why? Don't understand
England did not "choke". They outscored France 4 tries to 3 and lost to a debatable penalty in the last minute.
That’s the textbook definition of choke. They made a great comeback, should have won, but lost because their discipline still needs work.
