As an American, I can confidently say that I absolutely cannot pronounce any of these names and I'm so glad Ted Ed gave us an Irish narrator. Correct pronunciation is not only respectful of the culture, but allows us to learn about the myth without being distracted by mispronunciations! Thanks, Ted Ed, for teaching and sharing this myth with us all!

I find this very similar to a Romanian folktale called Youth Without Age and Life Without Death, which tells the story of a prince who, after being born, refused to stop crying until his father promised to give him youth without age and life without death. After coming of age, he asked the emperor for that which he had been promised, but seeing as his father could not give it to him, he set out to find it himself together with his enchanted horse. After overcoming all sorts of dangers, the prince arrived at Youth without Age and Life without Death, where he started living in a palace with three sister fairies, the youngest of which he eventually married. He was allowed to roam anywhere he pleased in this land, with the exception of the Valley of Lamentation, which he entered one day by accident, and which caused him to be seized with a longing for his family. Despite the fairies' pleas, he decided to return home. On his journey, he started noticing that things had changed a lot since the time of his adventures, and his hair and beard began turning white. When the prince reached the emperor's palace, he found it in ruins and covered in weeds, and as he walked around the building, he found an old chest and opened it. From within, his death, which had become completely shriveled, seized him and the prince instantly crumbled into dust.
There's also a Korean tale where a man save a sea turtle being tormented by cruel children. Turtle offers him a ride to the undersea kingdom, where everything is beautiful and he marries the turtle who is a princess of the undersea kingdom. But one day he get homesick and want to see his mother and village. The Princess give him a basket and tell him not to open it. He goes back to surface and open the basket, and his age is released and he instantly grow old and die.
Reminds me of the Chinese Lanke and Japanese Urashima Taro. So interesting how people separated by so much land and water and time come up with similar ideas on immortality.
Wow, the parallels to the Japanese myth Urashima Taro the Immortal Fisherman is incredible. Urashima was a fisherman who rescues a small turtle from abusive children. The turtle thanks him and the next day a huge turtle guides him to an underwater palace home to Ryujin, the Dragon God of the Ocean. Here, Urashima once again meets the turtle he saved who is now the lovely princess Otohime. He stays with Otohime for 3 years, after which he longs to return to his village. Urashima asks to leave, and while Otohime is sad she wishes Urashima well. She gives him a jeweled box and tells him it will protect him from harm be he must never open it. (in even earlier folklore versions, as shinto often has many variations, the princess identifies as someone from the house of immortals and takes him to the place of immortals) When Urashima returns to his village, everything has changed. He asks if the villagers know of "Urashima" and they respond with a legend of a man 300 years ago by that name who had vanished at sea. Stricken by grief, Urashima absentmindedly opened the box spewing forth a white smoke that quickly enveloped him. His beard grew long and white, and he kept growing older and older and older... until he became dust and blew away in the wind.
I feel very privileged to have grown up listening to seanchaí (traditional Irish storytellers) recite the stories of Irish folklore...of Cú Chulainn, Fionn mac Cumhaill and the Salmon of Knowledge, The Children of Lir, the Tuatha De Danann... we had the best stories! That's so weird. I'm Romanian and in my country we have a similar tale called "Youth without old age and life without death" The differences are that at the hero's birth his departure from the mortal land was prophesied and that he married a fairy instead. The fairy told him that he can wander all of the eternal youth land except for the Valley of Tears . One day, as he was hunting he ends up there by mistake and starts missing his parents. The rest of the story is the same. Interesting how you find the same tales all around the world.
Its even weirder knowing that those beings of the other world ( where this man ends up) would be consider fairy/fae ( Well tau but you get the point) in some way or another lol
In the Romanian story he goes on to live with three women, all sisters. But as it is usual with fairy tales, their themes appear in other cultures too.
I found the accent of the narrator (and the names) both cute and mysterious The story is magic and tragic The music and animation are perfect In the story, the princess came on her white horse and found her prince What else could I wish for ? Thank you for this tale
hello you I thought you guys lost some of your culture from the English kind of changing stuff. Didn't the Irish have their own language but it's outcompeted by English. Unless my history is inaccurate?

Tolkien’s conception of elves matches closely the description of the “Tuath De Danann”. Events in the Silmarillion, of how the Elves land in Middle Earth, play out the same way the Tuath De Danann’s landing in Ireland.
Reminds me of how Frodo comes to back the Shire after the quest, but he never returns whole like he was before due to the trauma and is destined for the Gray Havens.

Irish mythology has so many stories with blanks, alternative narratives and missing parts which is so unfortunate, as it's one of the most beautiful and creative mythologies out there.
