    The world's most populous nation, China, is also a greying society. It's estimated that by 2040, 28 per cent of China's population will be aged 60 or older. But since elderly parents have been traditionally cared for by their children, the country still lacks a comprehensive elderly care system. The challenge of finding proper care for her disabled parents led Cai Dongdong to switch careers and start her own nursing homes. By looking after her parents and other elderly people in the community, her ultimate wish is for every community across China to offer similar services for senior citizens.

    Here's a fun positive story to lift your spirits:
    My great grandma (who lives in japan) moved into a nursing home a couple of years ago. She's is incredibly intelligent and high functioning physically and mentally despite being 97 (or 98 I forgot oops). She could walk un assisted up until the age of 95 when she slipped in a bathhouse and broke her hip. Anyway, when she first moved in, she would gossip to us about how the other residents were saying some dumb things or getting into arguments and cliques (just like highs school, there were the popular ones and stuff). I usually only get to see her once a year when I visit Japan, but due to covid the nursing home started doing online chats, so I have gotten to talk to her a lot more frequently. She is honestly such an amazing, strong woman. My family is specifically from Hiroshima and she is the only atomic bomb surviver in her family (as far as she knows, even if one of them did survive, there is no way to get in contact). She has 12 siblings (or twelve including herself again I don't remember) and all of their birthdays are on the 20th of the month. Well, not actually but it was close enough and her mom didn't want to have to remember so many birthdays XD. It's a miracle she's still alive. Even after the bombings it was obviously still a struggle to survive. Since she grew up poor, she knew what wildlife was edible and what wasn't. There was a period in her life were she survived mainly off of a specific tree bark. She says she's lucky that she knew these things because otherwise she wouldn't have survived. Since she came from a poor family and her husband didn't, they were forbidden to get married but they eloped together and got married anyway. I never got to meet him as he died long before I was born (he was a heavy smoker) but I often wonder what he was like. My great grandma is such a powerful independent woman that I couldn't even imagine what her husband must have been like.
    So yeah, thats a little bit about my great grandma. She is truly a big inspiration to me.

    I hope there are increasingly more nursing homes with people who actually care and have the patience to treat the elders in China so those elders don't die due to lack of proper care.

      *China should legalize euthanasia for elderly people like Switzerland did.* So old people who can’t take care of themselves anymore and do not want to spend the rest of their lives rotting away in a assisted care/retirement home have the option of being euthanatized fast and painlessly with the help of doctors. *It could also benefit poor elderly people who have not saved any money for retirement and can no longer work.* ~ That is my retirement plan.

    • @JD-jz5rr
      @JD-jz5rr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Also Belgium is one of five countries that allow doctors to euthanize patients at their request, and one of two, along with the Netherlands, that grant the procedure for people with mental illness such as severe chronic depression. The idea is that those with a psychiatric illness should be afforded the same rights as those suffering from a physical one.

    • @JD-jz5rr
      @JD-jz5rr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also *Recently Australian euthanasia activist Philip Nitschke and Dutch designer Alexander Bannink created a suicide pod.* Called the “Sarco”, short for sarcophagus, the 3D-printed machine comes with a detachable coffin, mounted on a stand that contains a nitrogen canister. ~
      ~
      “The person who wants to die presses the button and the capsule is filled with nitrogen. He or she will feel a bit dizzy but will then rapidly lose consciousness and die fast and painlessly,” said Nitschke, who has been dubbed “Dr Death” for his work to legalise euthanasia. ~
      ~
      The “Sarco” is a device “to provide people with a death when they wish to die,” Nitschke said.~
      ~
      “This is a situation where one person chooses to press a button … rather than for instance standing in front of a train.”
      “I believe it’s a fundamental human right (to choose when to die). It’s not just some medical privilege for the very sick. If you’ve got the precious gift of life, you should be able to give that gift away at the time of your choosing,” Nitschke said.

She had diabetes and passed in her sleep after she had her dinner and forgot to took her insulin after, her death still feels like an unbelievable dream to me, it might also have been almost a year but my disbelief and shock from her passing still wouldn't let me shed a tear for her.
    The last thing she said to me was to add more rice cuz I need to eat more.

I wish the government will do more to help open nursing home for elderly people. Some elderly people don't have family members there to support and care for them. These senior homes here can be very iffy cause as we know that sometimes the workers are just there for the money and not much care is actually given. When my grandmother got sick with covid, thank the heavens she recuperated but she needs rehabilitation to stand and walk again. The doctors suggested sending her 2 weeks to a nursing home for rehab but we decided against it because we didn't want her to get worse. Especially because at her age (94) she could feel lonely away from her family and get worse.

    At least China has a cultural history of taking care of their elderly people and places like this complement the care, great angle.
    America is lucky to be prosperous enough to provide care like that, it is not as lucky to have as much affinity towards their elders, percentage vice.
    Hopefully Chinese people keep their traditional culture of taking care of their elders, which will be difficult as they become more prosperous.

    Elderly parents should be at home with family not elderly homes waiting to die.

    *In 2015, a 75 year old woman from the UK named Gill Pharaoh decided to go to Switzerland in order to receive doctor's assisted euthanasia, even though she was extremely healthy.* Gill Pharaoh, age 75, who wrote two books giving advice on how to care for the elderly, was not suffering from a terminal disease.~
    ~
    She said she had seen enough of old age to know that she was “going over the hill” and wanted to take action to end her life while she was able to do so.~
    ~
    Speaking before her death in Basel, the mother of two said her experience as a nurse, including working in nursing homes, had shown her that the reality of old age was “awful”.

    Most long term care for the elderly in Canada is absolutely horrible and I decided many years ago that I would overdose before I would allow myself to be subjected to the disgusting conditions, lack of proper care and abuses common to them.

    Nursing homes should be only for ppl with no children. We shouldn't leave our parents in such places with strangers 😔.. if we take care our elderly parents then we will get the same treatment from our children in future. We should think that way. I can't even imagine to leave my parents in such places as long I'm alive. We shouldn't be selfish.. 😞

    În viață ajungem odată să fim activi si de două ori depindem de alții : odată când ești tânăr si esti activ... Iar când esti copil si bătrân când depinzi de alții. ...

    What a tragedy being old Is.. Most look depressed. I hate the idea of relying on somone else to take care of me. Forcing me to do things. Not being able to feed myself,, wearing a diaper. 😟
