    Influenced by the advertisement, I bought some sexy underwear for my niece. My case comes up next week.

      Have you seen the size of the Andrex toilet rolls now? Skinny things with huge cardboard centres. I'm surprised at the rip-off prices they're charging for them that they haven't gone bust yet.

    A time of real Celebs,before modern game shows and terrible dating programmes have had to scrape together the dross that appears on our screens now . . .
    I remember phoning Toy shops and Hobbie shops,to see if the latest Scalextric Cars had arrived. Brilliant
    Thing is . . That's how you used to learn how to converse with people,how to interact and become an adult . . . Pressing a button teaches nothing . . Apart from contempt.

    Why is he buying underwear for his neice in the Access ad? WTF?

    • @RetroSteveUK
      @RetroSteveUK  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He was probably a nonce. It was joked about and not taken seriously back then, which is why people like Saville got away with it for so long. Seeing it in this advert is a good reminder of how far we've come.

    I was so glad to have been brought up in this particular generation. I see some youth now and they lack basic skills such as being able to speak English properly, pick up the Telephone and be able to make calls and inquire. I really don't know what the schools are teaching them, but them they themselves have Teachers in their now 20s. I rest my case.

    • @RetroSteveUK
      @RetroSteveUK  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Everything's gone/going online. I guess when that's the predominant form of communication it's easy to default to that & alternative forms of communication become rarer skills. We probably take our own skillsets for granted.

    Vitalite, I recall watching at 8 years old and making my own lyrics for it to impress a girl in my class. It was 'X Rated', something terribly naughty like; 'wake up in the morning, watch the tele, do a big fart up my bellyyyy'. Little did I know then, that it was a reappropriation of a Reggae song by-and-for white middle Englanders (like nearly all these ads). To me it was just the Vitalite song.

    John Hewer played Captain Birdseye from 1967 to 1998.
    Terry Wogan (Flora) / Roy Hudd (Stork).
    'For Mash Get Smash' jingle was composed by Cliff Adams.
    Great Milk commercial at 8:33.
    The Public Information Film (PIF) at the end is a 'classic'. It was shown endlessly at the time.

    I’m that person who was more interested in the ads than the TV shows themselves, and grew up in the 80’s/90’s, so this whole channel feels tailor-made for me. I’m very at home here. Thanks so much for the content.
    Curious though if anyone knows what the music used in the ‘Andrex Puppy (Toilet Roll Thief)’ ad is? I’ve been trying to find out since I was a kid, never had any luck.
    Was it made specifically for the ad?
    Thanks.

    The Vitalite advert was always great, really stuck in your head, though I much preferred the Maxell ad which used Desmond Dekker's original song but had a guy not being able to understand the lyrics (have you put that in one of your compilations yet, Steve?) - "Oh, oh, my ears are alight!" 😄
    The Ragu ad caused me a slight moment of panic when it began with someone saying, "calm down, dear", and I'm desperately thinking to myself, "oh god, no, please not Michael Winner!" 😅
