Good luck with all of your interviews. I dropped out of my PhD program and I have the opportunity to go back and finish my dissertation. I start on Jan 6. All my fingers are crossed I get through it. Happy Holidays!🎉

Sarah, I wish you good luck in all your interviews. Writing chapters in dissertations are difficult because the chapters need to flow from the next chapter from another and you have to reference your work and organize your ideas and not to repeat the same material.

Hi, new subscriber here! I just started my second PhD year out of officially 3 that I have (mind you this is the EU system). I’m working on different papers/projects at once and constantly feel like I’m not making enough progress. Recently it’s been frustrating to me to see a lot of content creators I used to enjoy watching have a very different lifestyle to me (lots of overseas travel etc) and becoming somewhat unrelatable. Your vlogs seem so authentic and it’s really a breath of fresh air. Wishing you very happy holidays from across the pond (Vienna, Austria) :)

Can you talk about in a vlog what happens if you’re on the job market and you get a job, but you don’t pass your disc or you pass with revisions? How does that work? Do people stay at there uní another year?

Thank you for this video! I'm wondering if you could speak about the differences in job-search experiences for English PHDs in rhet/comp vs. literature? I'm thinking about doing a PhD but heard to not go into literary studies specifically because of job prospects.

In my experience, with colleagues in rhet/comp and in literature, there are more jobs available in rhet/comp! At the end of the day, I think people should work towards PhDs in what they are passionate about

Hi! I actually talk about experimentations with AI as part of my research and teaching practices! My research and teaching are grounded in a deep attention to the types of writing students are using in their everyday lives, which are often digital, and which are increasingly more related to generative AI. To be very clear: *I never use text generated by AI in my own writing.* In this case, I am using generative AI much in the same way I would use "command + F" to find keywords in an article. In other cases, I use generative AI to help me brainstorm ideas, in the same way I would chat with a colleague or coworker and generate ideas. When teaching, I also guide students through explorations of ethical concerns about AI, including environmental damage and racial and gendered biases. As someone who teaches digital literacy, I am often asked questions about my approach to generative AI, and my approach is characterized by cautious curiosity!

Also coming back to this question to add that any materials I upload to AI chatbots are alwayssss open access/already publicly accessible on the internet. Otherwise this would be a copyright violation!

@@SarahFischerVlogs It is not a question of “dislike,” as this puts us in a morality conversation. However, here are a few things to keep in mind: AI is actively destroying entire ecosystems and people’s livelihoods. AI relies on Africans to train the AI services you and many others use for $2 a day. Research has shown the psychic impact on the Africans hired to do this work as they continuously work to keep AI “clean” by removing stuff like child pornography so that users like yourself like can enjoy AI in a clean algorithm. Secondly, NPR has an article detailing how AI uses tons of energy, drives carbon emissions and contributes to the current climate catastrophe. Thirdly, and this goes without saying, AI is dull, unoriginal, unimaginative, uninnovative and lacklustre. Students who use AI know this fact but want to speed up their essay writing, which, as many professors have said, shows in the students’ lack of analysis and dull and repetitive writing. Also, as you have a public forum where audiences know you try to use innovative pedagogies, I fear you are communicating to students that AI is an ethical tool they can use in their assignments. Lastly, you are being paid by a company to advertise their AI services, and I cannot even begin to think about the ethics involved in such an endeavour. I hope this helps clarify why and how the use of AI contributes to the destruction of entire ecosystems and people’s livelihoods.
