    I like what you've done in your loft. After years of having all my model railway stuff stored in boxes, I've looked through all my stuff to see what I do with it.

      Keep it simple and just build something rather than planning it too much is my advice

    Glad I'm not the only one who works in a mess looking really good in the loft great videos one of my favorite channels.

    Great idea keeping the points minimal....Trains look great running under that Road bridge...

    I’m heading in the same direction with the least amount of points as possible. I’m glad I’m not alone. Just gone through a nightmare of wiring problems:

    I’ve taken your advice and just gone ahead and built a layout and I’m really pleased with the results so far, in the past I’d definitely overthought things and got nowhere. Thanks

    Great to see an update. Agree with what you say about just get a layout going and run some trains.

    That is a great idea to keep it all separate, if only as you are less liable to collisions! 🤣 Nice to raise the station as it adds texture and emphasises that the two railways are separate running entities 💡
    Don’t worry about the frequency of videos by the way! Life just gets in the way sometimes 😜👍
    Great stuff, look forward to the next one 🍀🍻

    You mentioned the American idea I have the same plan if I ever have a room big enough just to watch the trains and maximum reliability as points over time can become a pain based on the WCML around the Wembley Harrow area so I can run my tube trains too ,great video cheers 👍🏻😊

    Great stuff. Liking the raised station, looking forward to seeing that develop. You can't beat a simple loop with trains running through scenes it's what it's all about 👍it's easy to get carried away and complicate track plans. All the best 🚂

    • @BudgetModelRailways
      @BudgetModelRailways  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think more layouts die an early death and never get finished because of overly complex plans than any other reason

      My plan is single track with a crossover loop and an inner siding. The operational

    Maybe it's my childhood visits to South Wales but I have always liked the look of houses banked up the valley side descending down to a river and railway. So am very interested in your idea of two levels of houses maybe with a pathway down linking the two streets. A backscene on the wall could give a third level. Always interesting videos, thank you.

    • @BudgetModelRailways
      @BudgetModelRailways  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My original multi town layout which gave me the idea for this was inspired by a book on Railways in the Welsh Valleys so that's a great coincidence

    Hi Mike.
    It'll be interesting to see HO and OO in the same room.
    I have just purchased a US mid-green & black 'Burlington Northern' diesel (Bo-Bo wheel arrangement) which is a runner and looks in mint condition, for only £33 inc. p&p. Can't wait for its arrival. I'm taking the advice you gave me in the comment section of the previous video by using her to pull wagons only (OO gauge). I did some research, and apparently at least one of those diesels are still active and have been reconditioned. My excuse for heading a British rake of wagons will be that a private company has borrowed it with a view to a purchase; not that I should need an excuse because as you often say: "Enjoy running your trains and have fun!".
    Keep up the good work! 👍

    • @BudgetModelRailways
      @BudgetModelRailways  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In addition several industrial users operate US outline diesels in the uk

      Wow, you've certainly done your homework. I'd love to find out where one of those beasts are running and film it. I'll have a hunt around on the internet.
      Thanks for the info, very much appreciated. 👍

      All ok thanks, take care and enjoy watching your trains go round

  • @paulc9588
    @paulc9588 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yes! Keeping points on the main line to a minimum is the key to reliable running when you have a lot of small shunters and tank engines that do not like points (as I do). Hornby Railroad 0-6-0s seem to be particularly sensitive, although some are better than others. Two road shunting sidings are fine if your main focus is on watching trains run around the main loop which is my 'thing'.

    • @BudgetModelRailways
      @BudgetModelRailways  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a shame the 0-6-0s are so poor as they would be just right for shunting. Ironically the shorter wheel base newer 0-4-0s are better over points.

    • @paulc9588
      @paulc9588 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BudgetModelRailways I agree. But even the Railroad 0-4-0s tend to be better than the 0-6-0s, particularly metal chassis ones like the Bagnall.

    • @BudgetModelRailways
      @BudgetModelRailways  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes the bagnalls are great, I have a BR one on pre order, at a discounted price of course

    • @oscarosullivan4513
      @oscarosullivan4513 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could go Irish and have mainline locomotives do shunting and pilot duty

    Well, about the mess, I understand you. I also works well in a mess, including at my workplace, and I live in a mess that is my flat. I'm too lazy to cleanly store everything right...
    Nice idea a simple runaround layout, I certainly will do the same with my new japanese N trains. Just have to buy some extra tracks... Thanks for the video !

  • @frankwhittle4364

    If you think that's a mess you should see mine. My wife complains about me even when I'm at the computer, I daren't let her in the shed she would have a fit. Its got to the point now where I cant find things, so I will have to have a little tidy. Looks superb Mike (as Always), know what you mean about the price of things, reckon I could make a fortune considering what I bought my stuff for a couple of years ago. Keep safe and keep smiling. I presently have a DC layout with two loops and am considering adding a third however I have a station at one end where I have a four track station which requires points to enter/exit. At the other end I have two storage loops for each direction which is handy so that I can have a continuous flow but all my points are manual and as a result I need eyes in the back of my head.
    I have a Hornby Select DC controller and one chip which I might experiment with by dedicating one track for DCC but I cannot see investing in converting all my locos from DC to DCC
    I too have a couple of problem points or locos/coaches/wagons that sometimes don't make it through so I am constantly cleaning and gauging while learning more about maintenance. As a result I can service most locos.
    Another issue which I have not solved is how to turn my locos around. Any ideas would be helpful. Maybe you can check out my layout.
    Thanks and keep up the great work

    0:40 Yes, LNER...
    Now I´d be careful if I were you, even the best laid plans can be changed beyond recognition and it wouldn´t surprise me if, in classic BMR fashion, that station is completely different in the next video.

    Mess? What mess? It's not a mess as long as you can still see the layout! I know what you mean about life getting in the way. Summer is coming, and that means more time outside doing yard work, vehicle repairs and maintenance, etc., etc., etc. Only 6 years, 5 months, and 2 days more and I'll have another 40 hours a week to do important stuff: model railroading!

    • @BudgetModelRailways
      @BudgetModelRailways  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't use the attic in the end, I have abandoned it and salvaged what I can for the shed layout. It was either too hot or too cold, even with insulation and a window. The shed is insulated and stays usable for nearly the entire year.

    Excellent layout.
    Do you plan your layouts or just go with the flow and lay track etc then move it around to what you want?

    • @BudgetModelRailways

      They evolve often from multiple starting points and influences

    What company packages its goods in the discarded intestines of cheap doors (the thick cardboard mountain bases)?
    For the platform length... which is a bit more problematic for continental rolling stock.
    With modern continental rolling stock in 1:87 length scale 120cm is about the minimum... The longest train that will fit on that length is just 3 coaches and a locomotive (with a coach length of 30cm). A basic Railjet train is already over 120cm for the 4 coaches alone and that doesn't include another 22cm for a locomotive.
    Alternatives are: go for a reduced length version (which shrinks them about 4cm per coach) or stick to Umbauwagen and pre-war stock which usually is around 20-25 cm in length.
    Lengths are LOB / LÜP, which does not take in account coupler length, which Hornby does include in their published measurements.
