Have you thought about an inversion table for Jonah? Might be worth looking into it as a way to elongate his spine and hip. You don't have to hang upside down either, just a gentle angle did the trick for me. I used to fall asleep on it because of the relief. My hip was crushed and I had a fractured pelvis in 4 places from a couple accidents. I had the joint replaced and the pelvis screwed back together but I still limped and had frequent pain. So I bought an inversion table and started using it every evening. I used it for a few years and one day I just didn't need to use it anymore. I still get flair ups of pain but it's only when I work too hard and over do it. Just saying this would be one of the least invasive healing regimen I can think of, IMHO.
I homeschool my grand daughter and taking care of the chickens and other small critters is part of that learning process. Now she has successfully (with supervision) hatched out her first 10 chicks and has ducks hatching today , 3 so far out of 5 eggs in the incubator . She wants rabbits and a goat . One of our bonus son's has a little micro farm at the edge of town . They gave her her first 6 chickens and the duck eggs . Now she has 20 chickens , plus the hatchlings . That chicken math gets ya every time. If I do something she thinks is wrong she will say "That's not how Justin does it". She is quite the little smarty herself at 7 years old .
We have that same qtr inch wire mesh & found a 2.5’ gardener snake in my hen tractor 😳 i got rid of it quickly. It was halfway in through the mesh whenni first saw it! So beware.. spose to be some kind of breathable mesh that works better to keep out baby snakes- hope y’all the best of luck❤
Always enjoy watching your vlogs and watching your children help. We recently started over with chicks as our 3 year old chickens met their maker (or at least a bobcat). We are always looking for a way to make things easier for us with our multiple gardens and raising chickens. My husband came up with an excellent little invention for the 18 chicks we are raising. I wished I could post a pic on here but I am not allowed. But he took a screw on chick feeder with the circular cutouts. He then took a piece of PVC Schedule 80 (3" pipe about 4' in length) and screwed 2 screws into the little circular cutout feeder where the pipe is standing straight up. He drilled 2 holes at the very top where he used a big zip tie to secure it firmly to a board right above the feeder. We only have to put feed in our new invention once a week as it holds 6 qts. of feed. Jonah or Josiah could make this in about 2 minutes and cut down on the extra worry of feeding chicks once or twice a day. You all have other things to do!!! If you want me to send you a pic of this, I will be happy to do so if my description wasn't descriptive enough.
I ran a rabbit rescue for 17 years and saved a few cages for raising chicks in the house for the first 4-6 weeks before putting them out in my static chicken coup with a screen door. We buy new chicks every 2 years to keep up the egg production, but I’m thinking of buying a pen like this inside the barn for future raising of birds to double my ability. Definitely need ways to prevent rats from coming inside the barn!
Showing us the different options you've used to brood chickens helps us process what our resources and context is so we can creatively sort our possibilities for brooding chicks. Wonder how many folks have been inspired to find their own brooding solution?
I use Shop Vac inside my 8 x 8 Chickie House, and it works Awesome sucking everything top to bottom....Chickens don't mind the noise...they were raised with constant Consturction going on
Still trying to catch up with all video's. Found Miss Lily's 5th birthday party. I laughed so hard at her brothers with the nail polish. Everyone shoul😮d see the video.
I use an extra large dog crate that I covered with welded wire as a brooder. I use the cardboard from cases of soda or cat food inside the dog crate to hold pine chips in. I cover the top with a flannel lined, plastic, cheap tablecloth to keep them dry, and the heat in.The chicks or poults are outside with a heat lamp. Raised them like this for 15 years.
I just built a 4x10' fancy schmancy brooder with three hinged lids, a divider, and lots of joinery. I can say this: keep it simple, they're just chickens lol. Nice work keeping it simple!
@Monnie Holt dog crates are easy to clean. With welded wire added only bugs can make it in. I don't have to worry about a building catching on fire from the heatlamp. I put the dog crate on top of a plastic table in an area fenced off from the dogs. No bending... so not hard on my back. Already has large doors. And you can just use the plastic bottom that slides out and clean that way... but I found the cardboard boxes work well to keep shavings inside...and it's all compostable once the brooder isn't in use anymore. 🤷🏻♀️
We've used a watermelon box in our living room for the first two weeks, then graduated the chicks to two watermelon boxes in the garage, then cut "doors" into the sides and moved the boxes into a secure covered chicken run (for nights, while free ranging the birds during the day), then composted the boxes after processing the birds. The boxes are the perfect size and they have lids.
That sounds great! Where did you find the watermelon boxes? That's great that you can compost the boxes after using them as housing for the (meat)birds. I do one of those Joel Salatin chicken tractors for my meat birds. I free range my laying chickens and ducks. The meat birds don't run so well so they stay in the chicken tractor that gets moved. I haven't seen lids on watermelon boxes. That's cool!
@@StoneKathryn you can ask the produce manager at your local grocer. The lids are often underneath the boxes in the display. Also, drive around to the back of the store and see if there are any boxes back there.
Justin, Jason at Sow the Land was trying a cheaper food for his pigs instead of the new country organics and they did not like his cheaper option. They had to try putting broth on the food to get them to eat it.
I put my chicks in a metal stock tank with a hardware cloth and wood 1" x 1" frame roof. Never had anything get into it. But I only ever get two douzen or so at a time.
A suggestion for you bullet proof brooder idea, this is coming from someone who would raise 40-100 chicks at a time in one year. Make it collapsible so you can easily store it away when not being used. I am on 3/4 of an acre and use or get ideas from a lot of your practices and designs. I do it all on 3/4 of an acre. Chickens, meat birds, goats for milk, ducks, I could do the pig port if I wanted to and huge gardens so my only problem is space to store things like chicken, rabbit tractors when not in use.
I'm 2 weeks today on my spring batch of meat birds and turkeys come next week. We had an issue with feed a couple years ago as well. It very curious how they really love some feeds, and hardly touch others.
Just and it works good to put paper plates or newspapers down and put the feed on that they find it better than the feeders we used to do that when we raise 100;000 turkey's a year
Nice, you got chicks and turkey poults! Good job getting the brooders set-up! I bet it feels good that they are rat proof! I love all the colors of the chicks! Lily is so cute holding the little gray chick! Those are all white turkey poults? Thanks for this Rhodes family!
Justin I know you need the extra protein but I'd just leave 1/4 of that tray with the chick starter that you like for the chickens in with the Turkeys. If they're not eating who cares about macros.

Maybe that was one of his farm chores to do. He s not allowed to do any strenuous stuff so he probably was told to go to that when he was finished with his indoor chores.
@@Jane_Snow_ I know they probably did but it’s just in ALL the other videos when new chicks arrive I see them do it so it caught my attention they didn’t at first but it warmed my heart when I saw Jonah come and do it
Put a baby chicken in with your turkeys and it will teach them to do everything and cut your loses at this stage. Since we started that one step we have not lost a baby turkey but we also don't raise huge numbers. The baby chicks will get more than what they need from the turkey food as a bonus, they will then get along with chickens later. If you don't want to mix them, just get their attention and poke the feed or water with your finger. Baby turkeys might lack survival instincts like chickens but they make up for it with their ability to learn fast, they just need someone to teach them. Ducklings work too if you are in a pinch but they are not the best as they are super messy with their water.

I'm surprised you didn't put the turkeys with the chickens so the chickens can show the turkeys where to get water and feed, at least at first.
The culprit could be mink. They use rat holes to get around and tend to kill as many as possible in one night.
