at the beginning of my knitting i didn't really know about yarn qualities at all and just bought the cheapest yarns that looked pretty to me so it was a lot of acrylics and polyester and i think for the beginning it was good because i could start this hobby on low budget and low stakes but now I'm still having sooo many polyester skeins that i just don't use anhmore since i learned what kind of yarns i actually like to use and wear, I'm considering to donate them to my local charity shop so someone might make something with it
I had the same exact thing! Right before I started my destashing journey on TH-cam I donated a lot of it /gave it away and it was definitely a good first step for me. Maybe look into elder homes or schools they are usually quite happy with yarn/craft supplies 😊💕
I went through the same learning process. Once I realized that I just didn't love those acrylics anymore I ended up donating them to a local school to use for crafting projects.
If you make small solid squares out of them, you can donate them as premie blankets for new borns. Acrylic is a good choice for this stuff because it's hypoallergenic. Also squares can be donated to shelters who will sew them together for blankets and clothes for the homeless. This way you can use the yarn and support a cause.
one of the first things i learned to knit was socks and i thought they were such a good project for my adhd brain cause there's a bit of ribbing, then a section of stockinette so i can get distracted, then the heal is a little challenge and a change of scenery, then stockinette again so more time to watch something with mindless knitting and then the toe box is another change and challenge. and it grows quite quickly so it's satisfying, and i can easily knit a sock in a week, so it's a quick and done project, not like a sweater which will take a couple of months. and socks are useful and they'll get used up, so i'm gonna be knitting socks for the rest of my life! :D i'd already bought a bunch of sock yarn from Action when i was still just crocheting (i did make a virus shawl out of a couple skeins), so i already had had like. 400g of sock yarn before learning to knit socks. a friend then gifted me 100g more. and then i went to tedi and they had sock yarn on sale. 100g ball for 8PLN (like 2euros). so i bought 8 balls. 4 balls of both colourways. after all, i'm gonna be knitting socks for the rest of my life! i need yarn for that to be possible! anyway, i knit one pair about 70g each and i haven't knit a single sock in over a year :| i have, however, knit 3 sweaters! (for an arbitrary definition of sweater)
@karlijnscorner i definitely do! especially since i just bought a couple sets of those bendy cable dpns! i have also just used 160g of that tedi sock yarn to knit a victorian bosom friend / sontag but i really hoped it would use 300g 😅 should have used bigger needles!
my job always has winter drives for homeless shelters so a lot of the times I use those 1 or 2 skeins that I don’t have a project for to make some hats and mittens to donate.
Destashing is daunting, isn't it? A few years ago, I was gifted a recycling bag full of laceweight yarn -all different colors, brands, fiber content, etc. It has challenged me in ways I couldn't have anticipated. I'm two years in, and have barely put a dent in it. I've combined different strands of laceweight with DK yarns in larger projects. I've doubled up strands to create a fingering weight and have used it like that. I discovered a few years ago that I really like creating with laceweight yarns, and especially mixing strands to create custom colors, so I'm enjoying the process. Good luck with your ongoing destashing!
oop adhd brain focused on sock yarn and sharing my own sock yarn overbuying and forgot to say i'm really impressed with how much yarn you've used! keep going!
I started out crocheting too. Well, I didn’t knit or crochet for like 30 years before I got back into it. I crochet now seriously 4 years and knit little over a year ago. Now I live in a warm area. So weight #4 and up is not something I need to wear. So now I use a lot of fingering and just bought quite a bit of DK on sale. 🤷🏻♀️😏 And I started to knit socks 6 months ago. Lord help me 😆 I ordered a bunch of sock yarn during Black Friday sales. As soon as I did I went through my stash and seriously went through it. And had a big Santa bag filled up and posted it in my neighborhood for free and someone was really excited to get it. Even with all the yarn that I bought I still have over a tote full less. The bad thing was I didn’t go on my Ravelry page to mark what I de-stashed. 😩 But I’m so glad I did that.
I really love crocheting with superwash sock yarn and a bamboo/cotton blend held double for making comfortable but not heavy spring/fall garments! I used bamboo pop (dk) and sock yarn scrappies for the cutest rainbow sweater vest while creating visual continuity ❤
You did so good, I am impressed! I have been enjoying following along last year and excited that you will continue. Last year I lowered my stash by 27,4 skeins(using your math) even though I knitted 140 skeins lol.
Last year i added about 5 kilo of mostly fingering to my stash. I knit up 2,5 kilo. I have 20 kilo of yarn i love in my home.. i have no bussiness buying more yarn.
I create little toys. Over the last 6 months, I've been in yarn chicken hell: I'd design and make a little toy, and I 'd be 1/4th skein short. So I'd get another ball and make another toy. Then only be 1/8th short. I've been on repeate this whole time. I feel like that little kids book"If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" is my yarn stash in fairy tail form. 😅
I love bulky yarn as it crochets up really quick which my ADHD brain likes. BTW , not that you say so just talking to some of us out there, granny square projects are NOT a good project for people with ADHD as most of us end up with a stack of granny squares as we "hate" the process of putting them together.
Yeah, I’m thinking of trying the method where you stitch them together as you go. But then you have to know what you’re making from the jump and it feels like a lot of people make granny squares to make something, without having a plan.
A great first project is a headband in knitting or crochet Imo. You get a result immediately, it doesn't have to be warm depending on the yarn choice. I am learning to knit cables and it has been So Nice to knit up for a headband in a worsted rustic wool and 5mm needles. It isn't an afternoon project with cables but without its a great way to accomplish something wearable right away!
I made some monstera leaves with cotton and love them. I think acrylic or blende of both may have more structure though. The most variegated yarns I’ve tried are Hobbi. Their Rainbow and Friends line has great green variegated options in different weights. Friends has more abrupt colour changes though.

What a great way to use up some of your stash! I will have to research if there's something like that near me

Hey! Progress is progress 😌
That color looks good on you. Great insight and plans!
Thank you!!
Perfect timing i was looking forward to this ❤
Hope you enjoyed it 😊💕

@emmakane6848 love to hear how that works for you 🙏

I have a real nice pattern for making plants, yet I need to find the right yarn. I am thinking of variegated yarn. Any suggestions?
What fiber do you like to use?
@LennyLefebvre-qb6qx I don't really have a preference for any fibers (jet).
