    as someone with a golden doodle they really did want to make it "the best of both breeds" and some doodles dont turn out as great as they plan it to. Maggie is wonderful at her and she is my whole word and is often checked health wise but its still a scary thought. she is completely healthy btw!! But the Fab Four is the Fab Four for a reason lol

    Your videos are very entertaining and very educational. I just got approved/recommended for a service dog by my psychiatrist for autism, OCD, ADHD, Depression, Anxiety, and Panic disorder. I'm doing as much research as I possibly can while I can, and this is a huge help. You also managed to keep my attention really well with your editing and etc.! You have a way with words even if you stumble on occasion (smartness for example, it just felt like you were a real person giving advice casually rather than condescendingly or strictly, and boosts comfort levels) and it just makes you seem more relatable and easy to relax to when watching your videos--kind of casual. That doesn't mean people who state the facts are bad, it's just amazing that you don't falter even if you stumble! All in all, Very fun, engaging, and educational and I look forward to more of your content!

    Great job on the video! I had a Rottweiler that I certified in Therapy work. We went to nursing homes. I had one of the residents pat her on top of her head 4x so hard that it made my Rottie blink all 4x. 😆 She just sat there and took it. You could tell she loved giving her love to the residents! My service dog is a Portuguese water dog. The program where he's from mainly works with Labradors and Porties (they prefer them over Poodles) as a hypoallergenic breed and I can say they're a really great choice! It's very important to look out for a reputable breeder though because they're quite active and on the sensitive side of dogs therefore they need a stable upbringing to qualify for service dog work later on.

    I have a lab mix she’s got a good bit of gun dog in her other than lab such as Weimeriner, and springer spaniel and a few other breeds she’s five months old and so, so smart but, we have a lot to work on. I decided to try taking her to a dog friendly restaurant today after we had been walking in and out of stores for some groceries. She did great walking in, while I ordered the food while I talked to someone about her sun glasses (at which point she was rubbing a little on me so I think I need to readjust them as they might have been a tad tight idk 🤷‍♀️ I’ll have to check) tried to figure out a table away from folks sat down and realized I needed some water. She has a solid down stay at home and USUALLY out in public but today wasn’t one of those days. I relented as I needed some water so had her follow me up then she stops right before the drink station right in the path of the door into the kitchen. Took a second to realize why and it was due to the sound the soda machine was making. It was embarrassing but it’s not like I can train her for that particular sound/ atmosphere. That is something I can’t prompt her for and just have to take her to places with that atmosphere more often. Honestly the way she stopped I thought she had gotten the runs (which would have been even MORE embarrassing as she seemed fine that day) but thankfully she hadn’t. Nor has she had an accident in store aside the pet store when she was maybe 12-14 weeks old because she got overly excited by some folks but I had napkins with me to clean up.
    In any case I got my water and once we were back I got her to lay back down beside me not exactly where I wanted her on the inside but it’s fine I took the inside and she took the outside blocking me in. So just adding more of that to my list of things to work on I guess. I anticipate even more embarrassing things like this to come for the next two years but I’m sure it will be less and less as often is the case with repetition

    As someone who has had a medical German Shepherd service dog, mine was totally not high strung.
    My biggest issue is that he wasn’t as in tune with me as I wish he had been and my dog was actually kind of rare, because he’s somewhat lazy.
    He will be turning eight this year, which means he is formally retired. However, I do have luxury of getting to keep my medical service dogs once they retire. I know not everyone gets to do this, so I consider myself extremely lucky. My medical service dogs will not be rehomed, they just get to live out their days with me.
    I’m back to watching these kinds of videos, seeing as I am looking for a new dog to take up that role as my old one gets to enjoy his well deserved retirement.
    The one thing I do have to encourage people on who have PTSD to remember is if the dog is not in tune to your mental state, they may not realize they need to do the interruption tasks.
    This can be a huge problem and it’s part of why so many people do go with service dogs that feed off their mental state. I personally, really need a dog that’s going to recognize both of my physical needs and mental health. So the fab four, usually don’t work out well for me.

    I've got an Australian Shepherd as my Psychiatric SD. Ironically, I got this boy because the breeder I was originally going to go to for a European Golden weren't producing puppies for the rest of the year (one breed attempt before all the Dams were taking their break for the rest of the year and it was unsuccessful sadly), so I did more research and took into Aussie's.
    Obviously, he's a herding dog and can be a bit of a pain with his own set of challenges, but I'd definitely say he has been a unique first for me.
    I still plan to get a Golden as my next prospect, but I'm taking this time to learn what I can do better next time and obviously enjoy the years I have left with my current boy until he retires lol

      My Aussie has picked up on his training really quickly! He's a bit of a devious little boy due to how intelligent he is, but he definitely knows when it is time to work and easily switch into gear once the vest is on!
      Staying true to his breed as well, he is always the happiest when on duty or has something productive to do and tends to look forward to working when he knows we're going somewhere

      @@SeraphinaVT that's so awesome! I'm really hoping to get my soon and I want a very happy to work puppy as well! Picking puppies seems a bit stressful, did you puck yours or have a trainers help or was it picked for you?

    • @SeraphinaVT
      @SeraphinaVT 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I picked mine out myself! I apologize in advance if this is a very long post lol
      To be honest, it was a bit scary and daunting as it was my very first time picking out a prospect as well and the fear of potentially picking the wrong one made me really anxious. It didn't help that a quarter way through training him, I was starting to have my doubts due to how much of a pain in the butt he was as a pup.
      However, I did some basic tests on the pup to help my chances of getting the right one! I was a bit unlucky in the fact that I didn't have many to choose from since majority of the pups were already claimed by the time I contacted the breeder. The two pups I was presented were both very well behaved already though and only had to do these tests on one pup!
      1: lightly pinching between their toes ; as a puppy, my SD didn't really seem to care all that much - he wouldn't hold a grudge or anything and for the first few times, gently moved his paw away before just letting me touch them and lightly pinch between his toes.
      2: willingness to follow ; taking my prospect away from his siblings and mother, i placed him on the ground to see if he was willing to follow me - often times he'd look back and occasionally stop and turn around. however, after encouraging him with a few kissy sounds and gentle but excited voice, he eventually hopped/ran to me and kept up!
      I didn't manage to do more little tests on his personality, but he definitely had a drive to learn and was a very inquisitive pup, so I had no worries on whether he'd give up halfway through training. He also imprinted and trusted me very early on to the point that he was trying to suckle my arm while I was filling out the papers to buy him (he stayed with me for bonding during that moment before parting ways as I had to wait a couple more weeks until he was fully weened).
      Not to mention, he fell asleep in my arms and ate out of my hand the very day we picked him up to bring him home.

    This was a really interesting video. I was like finding out which dog breeds is most recommended for which type of service work. What are some common types of service work that smooth and rough collie‘s are typically good at? I hadn’t heard of them as being a popular service dog breed until you mentioned it either. I had heard that another reason why huskies aren’t always a good service dog choice is that they can be very stubborn and therefore difficult to train.

    My sd recently learned how to make kissy noises... we blow him kisses alot. Lol. Now if we tell him to do something off duty and he doesn't want to he'll *blow us kisses and walk off or if we're sitting he'll do his kisses and the promptly lay on his back in your lap and demand rubs 🤣 it always amazes me how great he is in public, when we are home he'll still alert if he needs to but he's kinda a wild card, he's gotta whole lot of personality. Makes me laugh when people accuse me of making him work 24-7.

    I love this video! Most of this is spot on! Although I have learned as a groomer, German shepherds have a higher grooming maintinance (sp) than a lot of people think! Especially in blow out season! I currently have a standard poodle. I have no idea what I will get after my girl retires. I want a dog that kind of keeps people away (my girl was the runt of her litter so she's super cute and everyone wants to see her) and I want something handler oriented. • @hazelcurls1099
    @hazelcurls1099 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wish there were more small dog breeds that have info around suitability for service work. Whenever i try to look up "best small breeds for service dog" I will find an article with that exact title and then the actual article is about ESAs! I'm in Australia so we don't even have ESAs and there's barely any service dogs, most of which are organisation trained so there's no info and it's super difficult to find service dog line breeders at all, let alone for something other than a lab. Unfortunately, the only service dog line breeders I have found so far are golden doodles which 1. doodles are a bit questionable and 2. I cannot handle a poodle's grooming requirements. I'm having to research individual breeds and the best I can get from breeders is that they have dogs that make good therapy dogs which is obviously super different. Even the training org I called up didn't have breed suggestions for small dogs except doodles. I am so sad. It's already super stressful trying to apply for funding, save up, choose a training org (in Australia you have to have a dog trained by registered service dog trainers from your state before you can even do the PAT-which is compulsory), and find a breeder without a list of typically good breeds (like the fab 4). Also it's currently flooding in Australia so the dog shows this weekend have all been cancelled.
    I don't want a big breed because I want a dog that is easier to brush and transport (I'm usually in hospital for a couple weeks at least once a year and don't want to have to bring heaps of food). I also get hurt pretty easily and since I can't get a pretrained dog, I want a dog that is less likely to hurt me during training by stepping or leaning on me (it doesn't damage me but it hurts and I think it would affect my relationship with a dog even once they are trained to no longer do that). I also want a dog that's cheaper in terms of supplies like food, toys, beds, collars (here you have to wear the vest from your training org so I won't have to worry about finding my own service dog gear) and professional grooming.
    My GP, therapist and psychiatrist and even my mum are very into the idea but it's so difficult to get a service dog in Australia and there are very little resources. All the orgs that place pretrained dogs for free only give psychiatric service dogs to veterans and first responders and I even tho I have autism and my dog would be helping with that as well as other conditions they only provide autism service dogs to "families with autism" AKA autistic kids. If I want a service dog I'm either going to have to pay for and train it myself whilst still paying thousands of dollars to work with a training org or successfully get on the NDIS which is very difficult and can take years.
    I'm sorry for the rant. It was a great video! I'm just 5hrs into another day of service dog research since everything cancelled because of the floods and feeling really anxious and frustrated. I'm like you and I am very much a research person. I have almost everything else figured out: tasks, first year costs, tossing up between 2 training orgs, dog's routine, groomer, vet clinic, my university is very service dog friendly as is my job and hospital. I'm just having a hard time on the breed and having the dog shows tomorrow cancelled and one of my cats being a little sick is not great for my anxiety (my cat doesn't want cuddles so he can't comfort me). I just want to be able to make good progress! I read an entire book on Papillons but I'm still terrified I'm going to choose the wrong breed and have my dog wash. And if my dog is just a pet then I will have to be separated from them for extended periods each year when I'm at my worse mental healthwise and I think that would be bad for both me and my dog.
    TLDR: Australia and service dogs is really sucky

I know that you said that the poodle needs to be groomed daily, but does it shed a ton? I am needing a breed that sheds a little as possible. Also, is it good with recognizing scents that I am allergic to or possibly just recognizing if I am going into anaphylaxis or tachycardia?

    • @thepawswithpurpose

      it depends on what you need! if you need mobility you will choose a bigger breed, etc. but the choice is up to you! unless you are getting a service dog through a program! :)

    I am housebound due to seizures. This is existing not living. Is there any place that will help me with getting and training a dog. I don’t have between $30-$50,000, if I did I would be right there. I am terrified that I will get hurt or be taken advantage of during a surgery. I sat in a car dealership for 4 hours seizing and recovering and nobody notices. When I was able to pull it together I didn’t know where I was, couldn’t speak and went into the bathroom got sick and cried. It took me 2 hours to get home and I live 15 minutes away. Befor it happened I could find my way to the dealership a nd could barely stand. Please help

    Which breed would be the best for a psychiatric, mental service dog?

    • @roms7168
      @roms7168 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      theres not a one size fits all for service dogs, it truly depends on your needs and lifestyle. i recommend starting to look into golden retrievers (mostly used for psychiatric work of the fab four,) and if it wouldn't work for you, look into similar breeds. i honestly went down a rabbit hole of dog breeds until i found the perfect one for me.

    • @thepawswithpurpose
      @thepawswithpurpose  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i would recommend a lab, golden or poodle! just do lots of research on all of them! it always depends on your needs, but those three typically do very well as psychiatric service dogs. good luck! :)

    Are there any smaller dogs than the fab 4 here that are hypoallergenic for seizures and diabetes?

    • @thepawswithpurpose
      @thepawswithpurpose  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      no dog is ever truly hypoallergenic, but poodles are close. they come in three different sizes. they don't shed much (sometimes not at all) so sometimes people don't react to them!

      definitely goldens!! collies are typically more nervy and goldens are usually just super solid all around! :) collies can definitely make good service dogs, but it's more risky than sticking to a more reliable breed like goldens, standard poodles, etc.

    Hi thanks for this video. I have been trying really hard to find the right breed of service dog for me but most of them are off breeds. Do you know anything about dobermans, malinois, or beauceron being psychiatric service dogs? They aren't common as service dogs so research has been hard. I kinda picked these breeds to help me feel safer but if you have other recommendations I would appreciate it.

    • @thepawswithpurpose
      @thepawswithpurpose  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi! of course! and yes, out of those, dobies would probably be your best choice!!! there are actually quite a few successful doberman service dogs out there. i wouldn't recommend the others for psych work though. :)

    • @andreamoscoso4065
