    $1800 was MORE than fair. That family would've been happy with a $300 offer.

    I've heard those called Penny Farthing Bicycles. They were made in the 1880's, so not very many around today. Very cool looking though. I can see why any bicycle collector would love to have one.

      While the French built the first velocipede, the first patent was by Frenchman Lallement in the US, the highwheel was an English invention.

    I think it's actually known as a Penny Farthing cycle.

    • @youtuuba
      @youtuuba 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These were actually known as "bicycles" in their heyday....this was the first kind of machine to be called by that name.
      Once they became obsolete around the turn of the century, they acquired different names; in the States they were called "Ordinary Bicycles", or "Ordinaries" for short, and in the UK they were called "Penny Farthings", which was a term common in those days for anything old enough to have lost its usefulness or value (the bit about the name being a reference to the size of the penny and farthing coins is a retronym and not the real reason for the name being applied to this bicycle). In modern times, the preferred name for these bikes is "highwheel bicycle" to distinguish them from modern machines called "bicycle". Some people like to call them "bigwheels", but collectors and riders don't like that name since it is a commonly used trademark for a plastic child's tricycle.
