The way I see it is that unless you're in a mountainous area with huge super steep inclines, nine gears are more than enough, I had the same bike several years ago and know that the geometry of the frame makes it an absolute billy goat of a climber. You're doing a great build on yours, enjoy it when its done.
I agree. After I completed it I rode it a few times on my local trails and it did great. I ended up giving it to my nephew who mainly uses it as a really cool commuter. He loves it 👍
Great show Tony I have a v4000 from 1998 It’s got moto head shok forks on it needs new seals My rear shifter just snapped so I’ve had to replace it with a Deore triple and 10 speed cassette Runs like a Rolls Royce Still my favorite bike
What happened to the headshock…….if you have it you should try to fix it...its an amazing riding fork.....the bike is a little heavy you should have as much gearing as possible
I rebuilt the Headshock about 2 years ago and replaced all the worn out internals. I was actually able to find the kit for it. After I put the Rockshox in I left it in the garage for a few months then, gulp, threw it away because it was just taking up space! :-(

You have done a great job on this bike.
Great Job I have one and love it.
I have a nine on mine and wouldn’t change it works for me.
I recently gave the bike to one of my nephews and he is loving the bike

Roger William Denton sweet, great bikes and they are relatively light too
I'm rebuilding one as well..and trying to figure out where to start
The hardest part is finding replacement or parts for the shocks. If your rear shock still works you’re in luck. The front suspension can be updated.
How did you install the new front suspension on that frame ?
With a reducer similar to this one amzn.to/3jqDih3
