You guys should make a video about onomatopoeia in German. "How does X animal go (sound) in German?" (perhaps interview young children) I don't recall if you guys have made a video like this before but it is fun to listen to how other cultures think animals sound, such as a toad. Very interesting.

Als erstes möchte ich bedanken euch Cari und Janusz für alles, denen macht ihr für uns! Ich komme aus Usbekistan und wir haben verschiedene Kosenamen zum Beispiel für die Kinder benutzt man relativ oft " mein Liebling und Tschikito " und eine Frau nennt seinen Mann " mein Bär, Tiger, Liebling und Polvonim - das bedeutet auf Deutsch ein Stärker Mann. Und die Männer seine Frauen nennen " mein Herz, Liebling, leben und Honig "

haha really cool video. I wish I could already write all this in German but I'm getting there haha. Anyway one of my friends actually calls me little bee in English but we talk in French. And my boyfriend, he's French, calls me petite princesse (little princess), mon amour (my love), mon coeur (my heart) etc, and in English we call each other sweetie or cutie a lot. sometimes a mix of French and English, so I might say "mon cutie" lol. It's really interesting.

My husband and I add "-chen" to the end of each other's names! Mäuschen/Maus is what we call our cat!
Where I came from we often use the same strategy for nicknames!

What a funny episode! I'm from South Africa, my Mother is German, but she never taught us German, we grew up Afrikaans, my Dad's language. I had a strange nice name in High School. Translated to English its little fish. No idea why they called me that. I call my husband: Mein Liebling. With all the bear-nicknames, interresting that my second name, Ursula, actually means little female bear. So something like: my teddie bear would be a cool nickname, of course from my husband. My favourite was: Träumfrau! There is a beautiful song in Afrikaans about this guy finding his Träumfrau! Its absolutely one of my favourite Afrikaans songs, wonder if someone can translate it to Deutsh and sing it, it would definitely be popular here in South Africa. Auf wieder sehn!

Hasepup. I freakin love it. Although I once worked with a lady who severely overused pet names. Sweetie! Honey! Sugar! Pumpkin! Lovey! Angel! Babycakes! .. ugh .. puke! .. Anyway, she totally ruined it for me. I'll use "honey" and that's about it. And if my honey wants to give me a nickname, I prefer "tear-my-clothes-off-now". It's a .. a .. an ancient tribal name .. or something. =^} -Phill, Las Vegas
Is 'pet names' the umbrella term for "Sweetie! Honey! Sugar! Pumpkin! Lovey! Angel! Babycakes!" ? I'm just curious, because none of them is actually a pet name. If it is the umbrella term, then it is a good to know information.
Tob ias, I'd say the umbrella term is 'nickname' which is any name used in place of another. The term 'pet name' is used - well, of course, to mean a name given to an animal kept as a pet, but otherwise - to mean an intimate or romantic name used by couples. It's a bit risqué, so, I _wouldn't_ for example say, "Grandma, what's your pet name for Grandpa?" But I _would_, for example, say to a friend, "Just three dates, and he already wants you to meet his family? Shouldn't he at least give you a pet name first?" I should note, in reference to the lady I once worked with who used insipid cutesy nicknames for everyone, I used the term 'pet name' sarcastically. There was nothing sexy about her workplace nicknames at all. LOL!

Whilst we are speaking about the human animal and how words of endearment are used as nicknames, we might consider the sounds that these words make when spoken for the route of all language, as Leonard Bernstein reminded us, is the primitive musical utterances of the infant. "Ma" became "mater", "ma", "mutter" as "fa" became "fater", "father", and "Vater". These sounds as the infant developed and as we developed as humans became more elaborate.
The "soft "a" in for instance "ma"/ matter/ Mutter etc. is gentle like one would think of a parent.
Just a thought.

Ich mag eigentlich diesen Kanal, etliche sind langweilig, manche sind interessant, ich mag diese Sherin, ich wundere was für Wurzeln sie hat, ihr sieht es Hübsch aber mit andere Wurzeln, ich habe Deutsche Wurzel aber nie in Deutschland gewohnt auch nicht in Europa, in Paraguay bin ich geboren und aufgewachsen. Ich spreche Plattdeutsch und Hochdeutsch natürlich auch lesen und schreiben, mein Grammatik ist nicht korrekt, mir und mich dir und dich mische ich auf, ein deutscher sagte zu mir, dass ist okay, so lange ich meins und deins im klaren bleibe.

Ich bin selber der Russe und meine Freundin nenne ich zartlich "mein Mordchen". Das Wort "Morda" kommt aus Russisch und bedeutet "die Schnauze". Ich habe einfach die deustche Endung "-chen" dazu gefugt, um diesen Kosenamen mehr liebkosend klingen zu lassen :D

Ich komm aus Griechenland und ich find es lustig, dass man da Mitte des 20. Jh. (Oder vielleicht schon frueher) Fischnamen als Kosenamen benutzt hatte. Das klingt heutzutage natuerlich zu altmodisch ..

Ich komme aus Estland und ich denke dass wir nicht viele Spitznamen benutzen! Vielleicht ist es so weil wir ein nordisches Volk sind und deshalb eher introviertiet und kalt sind. Aber "Schatz" bedeutet "kullake" und "Liebling" bedeutet "kallis" oder "armas" dass ich denke man benutzt. :D

Wouldn't a closer match for the text at 2:18 be "Care to reveal one of your nicknames to us?". I'm nowhere good enough at German to be correcting someone else's translation, especially that of native speakers so don't view this comment that way. I'm simply trying to confirm my understanding of the verb "verraten" as "to betray". (E.g. - "Verrat mich nicht.") The use of "verraten" here seems to correlate with the conspiratorial tone a TV talk show host will use when asking a movie star guest to reveal a harmless secret about a co-star.
