I love those Zebco reels. I am sorry to hear about the shutdown of Tackleservice.
Me too!
Hi Matthew, just to let you know that I go back and watch your old videos
Hi Ed. I have a video coming soon. Here I am fishing with my buddy yesterday on the 4th. th-cam.com/video/p6xkvg7fv0M/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the overview, I've pretty much settled on Zebco spin cast reels for the kayak fishing. For me spin cast reels are faster and much easier to handle in a small boat. While I have an Omega Pro filled with braid for heavy cover even the least expensive Zebco reels have worked well for me.
Thanks for sharing. I can see how effective they would be on a kayak
Hello I took notice to your comment on running braid on the omega pro , this worked out for you ? Because I could not get braid to cast at all in my omega pro ! Is there something I did wrong cause it cast a mile with floro or mono but I would much rather run braid .
@@joshuam.escalera3493 20 lb braid has worked fine for me. Anything heavier wouldn't cast far enough to be useful.
I was just telling my wife this yesterday. I went to the lake in my new to me kayak and was using my baitcasters and it was not very easy to do. So I came home and took out all my vintage classic 808s. I think they will be much easier to use in the leg forward seated position.
Great Zebco analysis
Thanks for watching and commenting.
really enjoying your videos! i grew up with these zebco reels and just recently purchased a fishing kayak and found that spincasters are much easier to use from the low sitting position in a kayak. dug out some of my old forgotten 33s and purchased a couple new ones! thanks for your content!
That is awesome! I watched some guys bank fishing the other day. Three of them had birds nest in their spinning reels and all lost at least 15 minutes of fishing dealing with them.
Funny you mention this. I was just telling my wife this yesterday. I went to the lake in my new to me kayak and was using my baitcasters and it was not very easy to do. So I came home and took out all my vintage classic 808s. I think they will be much easier to use in the leg forward seated position.
Thanks 👍 great knowing I'm not the only 33 fanatic!!!
You bet!
Matthew just to let you know you helped me have the courage to open a couple of reels and clean as much as I could, Thank you
Good job! After several you will have a lot more confidence.
@@OutFishing13Matthew matt when can I find parts for 202, 404, 33 Reels
@@JohnnyRodriguez-er3xi how old are your reels?
@@OutFishing13Matthew Matthew only enough that there's no numbers other that like 202
Thanks for the in-depth break down of the difference. It was super helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Matthew,
I just found you again. Wonderful Dissertation, Matt. Ed said that, LETS GO FISHING!!!
glad you liked the comparison video.
I had the Omega 1 back in 79ish in high school. On a fishing trip about a year later I discovered the back cover had fallen off and then I didn't feel so cool any more. Didn't take it out much after. Wonder what ever happens to it. Know I search and find Vintage 33s I have 14 of them and take turns taking them to the lake. Oh the memories!!
Thanks for sharing The Omega One is a great reel and you can still find them on Ebay. Ones in good condition bring a premium price on Ebay.
Thank you! Great video.
Glad you liked it!
I have always used Zebco reels because I found them to be less expensive than other brands so if you break it bad they were cheap enough to replace. All my Zebco’s are from the 70’s 80’s or 90’s.
Cool. Zebco also makes some nice reels too that cost a lot more and are very high quality.
My favorite decade is the 70s.
Hey for the drag system couldn't you use a silicone based lube?
Sure. it would work great.
Hi there,
I know this video is a year old, but I have a question for you. I’m in the market for a new Zebco. I primarily fish for white bass and crappie, but I’d still like a decent drag. Money aside, which Zebco would you recommend. I have 2 of the platinum 33’s, but I’d like a nice step up in quality. Thanks a bunch!
Try the new zebco Omega Pro that came out in 2023.
What a great, informative video. No hype and easy to listen to. My father always used Zebo reels, he's gone now but I'm moving to northern Ca where the trout fishing is very good and am going to continue the family Zebco tradition. I'm going to get the 2023 Omega Pro. Can you reccomend a good pole for trout? I would really appreciate it!
Hi Sandie,
Thanks for commenting. I would recommend either a Zebco Rhino Tough 2 piece rod or an Ugly Stick GX2. Look for a 5'6" or 6' rod. I like the 2 piece for easy transport in a car. You can these at your sporting good store or online.
Thanks, will do!@@OutFishing13Matthew
@@sandiegoman66 Enjoy!
awesome informative video, thanks for the info.
You are welcome. Thanks for watching.
Hi there
I bought a zebco delta used thought i was bidding on a new reel
Is 19 bucks shipped a good buy.
Its got some signs of scratches and use nothing too bad just not new .
Thanks for your videos very helpful.
@@antoniosolari1013 yes, sounds like a good deal
Great video Matthew. Very informative.
Dan, thank for watching and commenting.
Hello Matthew,
Yes, it's me out of all the reels you are showing please show THE ONE IS YOUR FAYVERT. Ed
The Omega probably. It is so hard to choose.
How would the omega pro do on walleye fishing on lake erie?
It depends on how you fish and what pound test you like to use. If you are trolling, then I am not sure it would be the reel you want. If you are casting cranks and/or jigging It would be great. If you get the new 2022 Omega Pro, you can use 30 pound braid on it. Otherwise, 10 pound mono would be great. It is a nice reel that is very durable. Have fun. I sure would love to fish the great lakes for walleye.
@OutFishing13Matthew I usually cast and jig for walleye. I'd like to use braided line. But the 33s I have dont cast well with it. So I was looking into an Omega or a Bullet. Not sure which would be the better fit.
Thank you, Matthew, for another great video. Have you ever thought of writing a reference and service manual for Zebco reels?
Thanks for commenting. Although I love Zebcos, I am by no means a collector or the expert. Some guys who are collectors have a lot more knowledge than I do about Zebco and all the older and newer models. I do enjoy sharing what I know and publishing videos.
Do you have any info on the Zebco 733 direct drive HAWG fishing reel? Can it be tuned or improved?
@@andyanderson9165 what I know is it could not. Made in USA. Clean and lube it.
Another good video Mathew. Got a question. Did tackle service shut down?
Yes, TackleService.com shut down. I contact Zebco Support and they said parts would only be by phone order at this time.
Would a 6 ft 6 Uglystik Gx2 make a good pairing for Trout? I don't live too far from ya all we live in Pocatello Idaho. We haven't been fishing in a long while or since we moved down here we used to fish in Black Canyon Reservoir and the Boise River, but that's been 15 years ago.
We'd be bank fishing since we don't have a boat. My granddaughter asked us what fishing was like after we told a few fish stories and I figured we better get up and go since school starts on August 23rd.
Yes, that would be a great rod to pair an Omega with!
Great video! I wonder if the spinner head material is different between the Omega and the Omega pro? The pro seems to be made of a darker material similar to the Zebco Bullet. Better or worse regarding rust and corrosion?
They are all stainless steel. Just some sort of coating to make them different.
Wonderful content
Thank you.
Have you tried the roam style reel
Not yet. I need to get one!
What about the 165 omega underspin reels? Are they good reels for heavy duty applications such as weeds or moss? Also how are the drag systems? Thank you.
That is an older USA made reel and you would need to find one in good operational condition online. They have good drag systems, but may not be strong enough for heavy fishing in moss and weeds. I don't know what the drag system is rated at.
Matt I have 2 z33s here one broken shaft the other broken frame I was wondering if I could use them for parts on my old 33s and I have 2 33s authentics could I use for parts on them too
Send me an email with photos. Outfishingthirteen@gmail.com
Great video.
Can i upgrade my 888 with better parts and how? Thank you
Do you have a modern 888 made after 2005? If so yes. Here is an upgrade video for the newest 808 (which is basically an 888) th-cam.com/video/Xuyqzwjxwr0/w-d-xo.html
Thank you friend.
Hey also is the omega 165 underspin reels good for flipping lures in weeds and timber?. Does it make a good flipping reel?
Honestly I have never tried it for flipping, but I know what you are referring too. The trigger would make it very easy to adapt to flipping and pitching. Here in my neck of the woods we don't use that technique. Maybe someone who has used one for that, would comment. I recommend you comment on my Omega 154 video and see who responds. I did fish a little steam last year with an underspin 33 micro and knowing that technique would have helped me. I need to practice it more.
@@OutFishing13Matthew Which would be the heaviest duty / takes heaviest line reel that I can find in an underspin reel, preferably a vintage reel (but that's not an absolute). Zebco is fine, but not an absolute either!
@@SpringIsBACK The Zebco 33 underspin will take up to 10 pound test line. That is out of production, but you can find them on Ebay. Also, the Zebco 154 Omega. I have videos on both those. Those are the biggest Zebco push button underspin reels I know of.
I bought my wife a new Omega pro reel. the only problem I have with it is the drag system, it will just not stay set in the position you put it in
Hmm. That could be a defective reel. You may want to contact Zebco. They have an awesome return policy.
Matthew,
how about the old zebco 33j
Ed, those are great reels. Easy to work on and tough!
Does any company anywhere make a spin-cast reel NOT made in China?
Not that I am aware of. Daiwa spincasts used to be made in Japan, Abu Garcia AbuMatics used to be made in Sweden. Zebco were made in the USA until 2000. It is sad, but in order to compete with lower priced reels, most, if not all, reel manufactures moved to China to take advantage of the low wages.
Thanks, I don't feel so bad bout just getting the Omega I bought that because I got two for 45.00 on eBay in an eggshell package new
Nice. you will enjoy those!
I only have the omega z02 pro
Haven't used it yet but seems like a smooth reel
However I don't like either of the handles it has
Would love to see it made in the USA
Also I have a bunch of old pistol grip spincast rods and the reel won't fit on any of them
There isn't enough room between the reel foot and front cover
Really disappointing
I have noticed the same thing on the old baitcast rods. Only reels with a metal foot will mount on them. I agree. It would be nice to see some of the high end reels made here in the USA. What is odd, is Zebcos are hard to find in Europe, Japan Autralia and other Foreign counties. Not sure why.
@@OutFishing13Matthew Spincast reels were more common up until the 80's in Australia. A guy I work with is from the UK and he said that spincast reels were popular in the UK. The Daiwa Goldcast is still available in Australia and is a great reel. You can also buy ABU abumatics but the Chinese built ones are not very reliable. We love braid and baitcasters in Australia as our Barramundi and Murray Cod need a gutsy reel with 30-40 lb braid.
Wow I think these were better designed the the 33s ocilateing spool .cast frame .like the break system too .what do you think about the new 33s bought 2 new last yr. Grey color folds of honors
I like the new 33s. Very nice reels and the faster speed is nice too.
is there any differece in the omega z03 and the omega pro
Yes. I think I explained the differences in the video. Mostly the main gear. The Omega is solid brass and the pro is aluminum with a carbon fiber core.
My opinion, the omega one is best
They are one of the best. I really like my USA made Omega 33. Such a nice reel.
Anoid new omega. Its slow reeling ratio is not a good choice imo.
@@bruceyung70 for speed, get a Bullet.
Them reels are good for kids first reel. Thats about it
Thanks for watching and commenting. I find that they are an all around great reel. For adults, experienced or novices. The new Bullet and Omega reels are top notch high quality reel. I do agree on the lower quality, 202, 404 or 606. They are entry level reels for kids or novices.
@@OutFishing13Matthew i bought the wife an omega pro because she was intimidated by the other styles and after a couple fishing trips we determined it to be complete garbage and put it on the shelf. She then learned to use a spinning setup and never looked back
@@earleclemans4836 Awesome! I love spinning reels too and have quite a collection. I wonder what went wrong with the Omega? I have several of those and they work great for me. Stick with what works though.
@@earleclemans4836 I think you just don't like spincast reels so you have to bash them , very petty of you !!
@@mikecarr1378 i bought one. Tried it and it was a fail
You can't backreel with the more expensive zebco reels, which really sucks, you pay more for less. And if you never backreeled a fish, you're missing out.
Many reels have moved to the continuous anti reverse. I never have tried back reeling. I guess I need to learn
@@OutFishing13Matthew There's nothing to it. Set the drag as high as it goes. The line should come out freely when you pull on it, and the handle will spin when you pull on the line. ( just like a fish will when you hook it ) There's a lever you have to turn one way or the other so this works. If you pull on the line and it doesn't budge, flip the lever. Because the drag is already as high as it goes, you never have to adjust it when fighting a fish. ( You get really solid hook sets too ) When you hook a fish all you have to do is keep the tip up to pressure the fish. You are using the rod to fight the fish instead of the reel. When the fish surges, you don't have to worry about the drag because the reel is in free spool. Keep using the rod to pressure the fish. When the handle stops spinning, reel in. You know you have a good size fish hooked if it can spin the handle against the pressure of the rod tip. Do you really need to use the drag for crappie and bluegills or even a 12 inch bass? The real fun will be when you hook a fish that can spin the handle, like a 3 pound channel cat. You never had so much fun in your life. You can google backreeling vs drag to read more on the debate, but to me, there is no debate, I've backreeled every fish I ever caught. When I started fishing in my twenties, I remembered how there was two ways to use the reel. I was impatient to start and didn't want to get into all the details of setting the drag correctly, so I set the reel up to free spool and never looked back. Backreeling is considered to be old school, but before you dismiss it, ask yourself why are there two different ways to use the reel? They both work. You also have more control over the fish and it tires it out faster by backreeling. If you try this, please let me know what you think. It won't take long to get the hang of it. Keep trying until you hook that first one that can spin the handle. Super fun! Thanks for your reply and Merry Christmas!
