- In today's video I will be dechroming the front grill of my Audi A4. I will then be doing a DIY makeover of the front grill and the back spoiler on a budget using Rustoleum spray paint.

does this mess with any internals like the radiator or intake
Looks pretty good. May I suggest in the future with the grill and spoiler being plastic you may wanna use an adhesion promoter and a clear coat to seal in that base black so it will last.

You really should wipe down any surface with wax & grease remover (or similar) before painting!
it looks neat tho, but u can see the lack of surface cleaning on the rear

I have done this on most of my cars and it last the whole time I have the car it’s fantastic.

Thank you! Nope no peeling at all. My last car I did the front grill in satin black and that was in for 2 years no issues. If you are worried about stone chips you can always go over it with the rustolium clear it comes in a gloss and I think a Matt to add extra protection if you maybe doing some odd roading or something like that. Thanks

I did 2010 Audi A6 C6 using this method and the vents by fogs. Shot man

No as long as you apply it lightly it’s all okay.

Remove the radiator plastic trim cover before removing the cover remove the hood release and cover and I recommend you put a cardboard behind the grill.. so you dont get any build up overspray clog up your radiator and inter cooler

No it was all good it’s a thin enough layer that it doesn’t affect them
Scuff the chrome and the paint will stay longer and hit it with some automotive clear the next day IMO. looks good though.

Great idea…but that would be a pain in the ass to wrap a grill.
Doesn’t the paint over the parking sensors affect when you park or drive? Like since the sensors are covered by paint isn’t it inaccurate?
No it all still works perfectly it’s a thin enough coat that they still work perfectly but if you are worried about it you can always test it on your vehicle as all are different just out a piece of tape over the sensor and you should be able to tell of it will give any bad feedback

Matt black is always nice but depends on the look you are going for. If you black out all the chrome if you do it all gloss black it does look really nice

Looking good man. Just a question. When you painted over the sensor. Didn't it cause problems with your sensor? Or did you cover it? I want to paint my audi a6 avant c7's grill too.
Hi no I didn’t cover them when I spray over them I just did a light coat it doesn’t affect them at all.

I was actually spraying over my first layer of paint that I had done a few weeks back so it already had a primmer and then 3 coast of Matt black so just added the gloss
what about the chrome areas near the windows? Any ideas how de-chrome that?
Yea you can either wrap them with vinyl wrap or you can paint them

You know you can remove the front bumper in less time than it took to mask it then the grill is attached with 6 torx screws, also the Audi logo is easily removable, you could have painted everything 'off car' in less time and without getting over spray on your white paint and also clear coated for durability at the same time, good job though all the same 👍🏻
what spray would you suggest to clear coat with`?
@@nugetus a rattle can will do but ensure that it's a good quality 2k acrylic, you can choose gloss or satin, give it 2 or 3 coats in a dust free environment and don't try to bake it in the sun, good luck 👍🏻

Does paint really stick to chrome? Thinking of letting a paintshop do some stuff on my allroad but they said its really hard to spraypaint chrome
Yes if you apply thin coats it lasts a long time if you take care of it obviously if you get stone chips that will chip the paint

Did you get a super smooth finish? I did mine today but seem to have orange peel effect
If you start off with a thin coat then yes it’s smooth if you apply to thick to quickly it can do that I had that the first time I did my rear spoiler
wet sand w/ fine grit paper..really fine grit ..like 1000 or higher
Hyperdip would have been a much better option. Shaker can painting always leaves flaws which are much harder to repair.

Is it safe to spray dip right onto the grill? I recently got a 2017 A4 and want to give it a blackout appearance by plasti dipping every single thing that’s chrome and to tint my windows
Hi I have used plastidip before and it is a good non permanent solution

Well the best solution would be to remove that grill but that can be time consuming. If you do small coats at a time it should be fine I k is of many people who have done it and haven’t had any issues.

You had paint on your bumper.. bottom right corner. How did you take it off?
Just wiped it straight off it’s a little over spray it wipes strait off

Hi yea it does stick to the chrome just make sure that it is very clean and no residual oil or dirt and it will be perfect

it will fall of with time, No doubt about that, spicial when it becomes winter, with the salt and All that shit. sorry to say 😪
@@Stephansen90 no it wont fall off. Just put many thin layers and it will last! I had plastidip in my b8 grille over 3 years and there was only couple small chrome spots made by some small rocks hitting it etc.
How long after apply all the spray and clear coat can I remove the paper
As soon as it is touch dry you can slowly remove it but just be gentle and all should be good

would like to see it months after it has been painted without cleaning and sanding it

Any over spray just came off with a microfiber cloth as it was not 100% dry
Is there anything behind the grill that shouldnt be sprayed?
Well if you spray it too quickly and too heavily you could get to much on your radiator your best option is to apply light quick coats at an angle and try not spray directly through the grill
Would be better if you sanded chrome and used etch primer and the black paint and clear. Also prep plastic and use plastic adhesion plastic primer and then paint. This way paint doesn’t flake off after a wash or over time.
Will you ever spray the audi logo at the back?
I won’t spray it I would rather remove it and buy the gloss black version. I am looking at doing that soon in my upcoming videos

I hope you took the time to clean where you were painting. You should have bought painters tape instead of using crappy masking tape. All in all the black looks really nice.
100% agree the video was to show how simple it was not everyone can get painters tape or know what to get. But yes I’m a perfect world painters tape is the way to go!

I didn’t tape up inside so yes some paint got on to the radiator but didn’t cause any issues

Hello, how do you prep small surfaces with difficult access on the front grill, it seems impossible for sanding, do we need to sandblast it? A lot of plastic pieces are impossible to sand, how to paint it properly?
@@optiAero in thet case I would just clean it properly and spray adhesion promoter as a first coat. Thats it
Looks like an easy job, but to whoever is trying to do that, it's not sustainable. Can Rustoleum is too thin of a paint, few hundred miles on the highway and paint will start to chip off. Give it a year and will look like shite. Source: I did it on my car, the exact same method
doing this to my audi tomorrow but i will take off front audi badge and replace it with a black badge

If you are carful enough it doesn’t get onto the radiator.
WHY IS EVERYONE WORRIED ABOUT THE RADIATOR, SO EASY TO JUST PUT A PIECE OF CARDBOARD FROM A CUT UP BOX IN BETWEEN THE BACK OF THE GRILL AND RADIATOR
Now you just need to paint the back emblem

No sanding. The paint is a 2 in 1 primer and paint I have used it many times before so I knew it would be okay without a primer
Have you got the link to this. The ones I find on Amazon says "multi-purpose paint". It is the same brand. Is this okay?

Lasted untill I sold the car my previous car I used the same paint and had no issues or fading for 3 years

Well it can be tricky if the surface isn’t clean properly but if you use the rustolium like I did it will be fine my last car was a Dodge Journey and the whole grill was chrome and I sprayed that black too
The problem becomes when in a few weeks the nickel paint jumps because of the pits on the Road.. 🤷♂️😄

looks great however i would take the grille off the car (more work i know) before you paint it as you’ve now painted your radiator black behind the grille

You have to remove the whole front bumper to get the grill off. If you have the time and space to do it you can definitely do that. It’s entirely up to you

Around an hour to be safe as long as you don’t let the pieces of masking tape fall and go onto what you painted or it will stick and pull off whatever you have painted otherwise remove it carefully and you should be good to go in an hour.
You gotta etch it and protect it man or it will chip off.
Had it on for 1 year no issues. Maybe I was just lucky
The correct spelling is actually 'grille,' not "grill" (like the cooking kind).

Normally lasts a couple of years with no issues had it on my previous cars for 4 years no issues but it’s the same as any other paint it can still get stone chips. But lucky I haven’t had any issues with fading
