This was all live in one take. What you hear is what you see. There wasn't even a premade beat, it's just Mix Master Mike scratching the kick and snare in perfect rhythm off that one record he came in with.
I'm guessing that out of every 100 people that watch this 95 still don't comprehend what you're saying. There's no backing track, no drum samples, no metronome, he's bouncing the record back and forth & putting the needle exactly on single beats from that record to make every beat you hear.
@@lukeingram7655 yup, 100! the DJ is making the entire beat, from beginning to end. The breakdowns, all perfectly synced. Amazing shit! And never seems to miss one single beat! WOW. Now this is mad skill. I mean, try it....once, and see how uncool it sounds. LIke picking up a guitar as a beginner and trying to thrash. It sounds like ish compared to a seasoned player. Same here. The DJ is so precise and perfect....wow. Just wow.
They had a bunch of events during SXSW in 2019 and couldn't get into a BBQ joint. They ended up coming to Lucy's Fried Chicken, where I worked. Our head chef and kitchen manager was a lifelong fan, they were his favorite group of all time. When their server told them that, they asked for Cy (the chef) to come out to meet them and take pictures. THE nicest guys in the world (obviously minus one member by this point). The next day at one of the events they were speaking at they were asked what their favorite BBQ in Texas was. They said, well it's not BBQ, it's Lucy's Fried Chicken. They're class acts.
This song is a homage to the DJ. From the first line "Nobody can do it like MixMaster can" - it is taken from a catchy jingle for a whole period of McDonald's commercials. Understanding they are saying their DJ is a brand unto himself and going so far as to invoking what was easily the most recognizable brand at the time. All the way to the video concept, where the MCs were mute and still until the DJ gave them a voice. You feel it - the celebration.
Thanks for giving my Beastie Boys props. It's so nice to see a younger generation enjoying what I loved for years! I saw them over 50 times in concert! They were so good. RIP MCA.

Jai's shirt is fire. Best movie ever and can't wait for the sequel. One of the only sequels I've ever looked forward to. Glad you are down this Beastie rabbit hole. Always have been one of my favorite groups. Like any artist you really enjoy, most of my favorite songs were not played on radio. You discovered them as tracks on their albums. Take care. Stay beastie.
Love the reaction! It's crazy to me how a bunch of reactors never listened to them growing up, especially if they were in to hip hop. You should watch their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Chuck D of Public Enemy and LL Cool J give the speech and tell really cool stories about them when they toured together in the 80's.
"what was the point" just driving home that this is the essence, literally no frills, you can do this in the 3rd basement and rip it. Also to make Mixmaster Mike the star of the show
I always thought that this song/video was the B-Boys paying homage to Mix Master Mike...They were saying "You complete us" I feel lucky that I was a kid who got to enjoy the B-Boys unfold their amazing career. That channel became "The U/WB" network...Good times...Good Vibes!!! Does MTV even show Music Videos any more?
You guys should react to their performance of "Ch-Check It Out" on the David Letterman Show. The video is on TH-cam and for some reason NO ONE has reacted to it! Be a trend setter. It's an epic entrance where they start out on the street before they come out on the T.V. stage.
I loved this video...it was as if he, the DJ, was the most important part of the act and he gave them "life". The Beastie Boys always had the most imaginative videos!
Always great to see people discovering "The Beastie Boys" for the first time (my all time favorite group). Haven't seen anyone react to "Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun" yet. So much of what the Beasties do is an homage to early NY Hip Hop. In the early days the DJ was the star and the MCs (they were not yet Emcees) were just the garnish. So in the video before the DJ shows up the MCs are stationary in the studio, like any other instrument. When the DJ starts they animate and when the DJ is done they go back to stationary, like an instrument after it has been used. These three white boys from good homes showed so much love to the roots of Hip Hop that all the old heads respect them even though they had zero street cred. Good music and respect transcend.
I miss all this. Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash, Beastie Boyz. All that scratching and hard beats. You could dance to the old stuff cause I sure did!! 🤣🤣✌️❤️ from Ky
Like many people have noted on other websites; No women in the background "grinding" and twerking, no gaudy jewelry hanging from their necks, NO FLASH--this was done in a basement...just basic in your face rapping by three MC's and their DJ. MC's--you don't hear that term anymore.
I think the point was they wanted to show it was live and one take. Mixmaster Mike is legend. He just did live DJing. Not playing a record, playing an instrument live, and drumming on the turntable. Skills to pay the bills.
