Rodman Dam Spillway Report - 8/15/18

- I spent just 90 minutes fishing the Rodman Dam spillway this morning. It's been a few months since my last trip here. Surprisingly, I was the only fisher on the spillway. There were 2 gentlemen on the west side fishing pier and 4 or 5 folks fishing the reservoir from the bank. That was it. It was actually pretty nice. Cloudy and breezy. Today is day 1 of the Lucky Tackle Box August fishing tournament and I was hoping to catch a few giants. Well, I'll take what I can get. LOL.

It's March 2024 and I'm coming down to Florida April 22nd 2024 for a couple of weeks. I'm definitely going to check this place out. I think I would just wacky rig a worm and let it float in the current
If the gates are open, you'll need some serious weight to keep that bait in the water. When I do the weighted crankbait, I use 1.5 oz weight. The fish are most active when the gates are open and the current's raging.
It's been a while since I've had the chance to get down there, but seen a little bit of everything come out of that spillway, largemouth, sunshine, garbage, eel, nice cats and bream. A lot of crabbers dipnet those shad for bait. Al's ran into quite of few gators while fishing there at night.

Yes, I've definitely seen the guys dipping their big net for those Shad. They're so thick. Great place to fish lots of fun

It's too steep. Slick concrete down by the water. You can't tell in the video. But it's bad. I already fell once.
That spillway holds some big bass from time to time. I love that lake . The okowaha I know I spelled it wrong. That river has some nice bass from time to time too. Nice vid Ola!
Yes it does! I watched a man land the biggest bass I've ever seen in my life a few months ago. Right there on the spillway. I want to launch the kayak one day and head down the Oklawaha. Great fishery!

Thanks eve. Yes this spillway produces lovely fish. And the shad are huge too. They don't eat those shad though. The ones they eat are much smaller. Those big ones are probably close to 2 pounds!

Yep. I've been there too when it's like that. It's controlled chaos. Everyone gets along and helps each other out. I enjoy fishing there.
Great video! I've fished numerous spillways but never targeting largemouth bass. Not a species I would expect behind a dam. Very interesting! I'm always after catfish striped bass or hybrid bass. I suppose it had a lot to do with location. Really nice!
I guess so KennyP. They're always in the spillway. This is where I caught my PB striper a few months ago. And also my PB Gar. haha. Caught turtles too but I have not caught any catfish or crappie. They're in here though.

Oh let me tell ya.... come back in February / March during spawn. Absolute GIANTS in there. I mean double digits. It gets CRAZY.

Haha! The last fish was some sort of Shad. I'm not sure but I've heard them called American Shad. They are so stinky!

It can be exciting. Those dang shad are so think though. You snag them every time you reel in. You can feel the lure bumping them. Insane!!
