Wielki bekacz is still thriving in the Narew valley in Poland (among other places). I find it interesting that its habitat depends on the presence of traditional agriculture and grazing of cattle and horses. Of course the future of this agriculture is as threatened as the bird...
These Snipes are very beautiful and vocal. Had to laugh when I seen them. My Dad's bright ideal. Was to take I and my brother. And the rest of the neighborhood kids. On a snipe hunting episode. We all had to have a flashlight. And a brown paper sack. Dad and Mom took us in the woods. To look for Snipes. If we found one it was . To go into the paper sack. My Dad let out a panther scream. Scared the you-know-what out of us. We were back to the car .Before my parents even thought about arriving.
These birds' lekking calls sound very familiar, like dolphin whistles and clicks. Nature is somewhat similar in something. The ways of similarities come up.

A little help: Doppelschnepfe in German. Means: for fucking hunters these birds had a double value compared to the Common Snipe. In Germany this species is extirpated since years, caused by habitat loss. Belarus must still be a true paradise!
