I agree with Math, I never saw Kanye as a real “backpacker”. You could tell in those early years that as soon as he experienced a certain level of success, he was gonna switch up. He was letting everyone know who he is wayy back then. Only the backpackers were so hyped for Kanye. He just knew he could exploit the backpackers because no street dudes would accept him or his style of music at the time.

Kanye has been switching up throughout his whole career. The person who we’re seeing now is like the 6 or 7th different version of Kanye West. In 2002-2004 he was going hard with the “backpackers “. He was backpacking Kanye with The Louie V bag etc. And It was indeed a term and it was used for that whole movement at that time.

My first Hip Hop concert was Talib at SJU. He brought out Consequence and Kanye as special guests. This was Spring 2003, a year before The College Dropout. Kanye was definitely using Talib and Mos to get some of that Indie Hip Hop recognition. They used to market Kanye as a Backpacker with a commercial budget. I think The Source used that phrasing specifically when they were talking about Kanye as he was about to release College Dropout.

For anyone that denies this...or was too young at the time, He literally brought Mos Def and Jay Z together. Not long after Mos and Kweli got sat down by Puffy and yelled at for a performance of Childrens Story. At that time there was a clear line of underground backpack rap and mainstream JayZ style street rap. Ye literally brought the 2 sides together. He produced for Jay, Ludacris, lots of big commercial names and Common, Kweli, Rawkus Etc. He was the bridge to the "Gap" like "Banana Republic" and "Old Navy". There is a side of these types of discussions nobody talks about. The interesting thing about the hidden side is that it actually puts the reasoning behind terms like "backpack rapper" into context. Hip-hop reflects real life. It is a bit like prison - everything in the "inside" came from the "outside". In a sense, the "backpack rapper" was the derisory term of the broader anti intellectualism trend of neoliberalism and Reaganomics. Reaganomics was at the root of the black "thug model" which became the hub of a variety of anti intellectualism clichés of the mid 1980s. The funny thing is that the image that became iconic for the "thug model" rappers was an image concorted by Reaganite "conservatives". For those old enough, do you remember Reagan's rapidly breeding "black welfare queen"? Although she turned out to be white Linda Taylor, the image shaped most ideas about black women in the ghetto. Then Bush senior and the crime prone black thug that the Clintons and Joe Biden curated into the crime bill of mass incarceration. The privatisation of the carceral system followed rapidly. The "deadly symbiosis" was born and all the talk about "back pack rappers" is just another layer. Is Kool Moe Dee a backpack rapper? To the system, the most dangerous black person is not the "street dude" with a gun and a bandana. It is the one that drives a Volvo with a bookshop or library at home - the "backpack rapper" that likes breathing instead of the cemetery.
