I agree with Math, I never saw Kanye as a real “backpacker”. You could tell in those early years that as soon as he experienced a certain level of success, he was gonna switch up. He was letting everyone know who he is wayy back then. Only the backpackers were so hyped for Kanye. He just knew he could exploit the backpackers because no street dudes would accept him or his style of music at the time.
I don't see how he switched up. As an artist he started to evolve and I dont see what was wrong with that. His music was still always authentic and centered around what he was going through at the time. That never changed. His ways of expressing it just changed

My first Hip Hop concert was Talib at SJU. He brought out Consequence and Kanye as special guests. This was Spring 2003, a year before The College Dropout. Kanye was definitely using Talib and Mos to get some of that Indie Hip Hop recognition. They used to market Kanye as a Backpacker with a commercial budget. I think The Source used that phrasing specifically when they were talking about Kanye as he was about to release College Dropout.

At that time there was a clear line of underground backpack rap and mainstream JayZ style street rap. Ye literally brought the 2 sides together. He produced for Jay, Ludacris, lots of big commercial names and Common, Kweli, Rawkus Etc. He was the bridge to the "Gap" like "Banana Republic" and "Old Navy". That's why that bar was so great at the time.
