You never disappoint on the artwork. Two of my favorites, mushrooms and dragonflies. Wow, that is the sharpest pencil ever! Great job on the wings.😍👍 How interesting that the chanterells have an apricot scent.🤔 And that coral was something I've never seen before. Lovely. I doubt I will ever be brave enough to try eating a mushroom from the forest, even though I know some are edible. I just think they are fascinating anyways. Thanks for sharing. Oh that cinnamon roll😋🤗

Really hard to describe! They are all “mushroomy” which is kind of that umami flavour I think. Not quite savoury, but not sweet or sour either. Chanterelles have a lovely delicate taste I think, while ceps (which we didn’t find any of) are a bit more meaty/stronger flavoured

To me, if using a different tool solves a visual problem, then it can never be considered as wrong. Successful artwork is all about producing an image that communicates what matters to you the artist most, right? How you get there and techniques you choose should be viewed as arts smarts! This week's piece is very strong. Lovely work!

Beautiful magical forest Sarah! 😍 Thank you for this wonderland walk...the Amanita Muscaria (Fly Agaric) has been known for many centuries as the 'Sacred Mushroom', and if prepared properly, can be taken with reverence... there are many informative books on this to guide the journey🌟 💛✨🙏🍄🌛🌌🙏✨💛 (Those Chanterelles are absolutely incredible! OMG!)

The dragonflies were amazing! One actually landed on my hat while I was photographing the other but my camera man forgot to press record on his phone…😫🤣 I’d love to find one of those electric blue ones next 🥰
Be careful. I used to paint like that - and it ruined my eyes. Very good lighting and magnifying equipment will help, but also regularly coming away from the painting and looking at different distances to exercise your eyes.

Love the picture of the mushroom and dragonfly, some great tips on shading and shadow. Was really peaceful watching you walk, was like I was there. And of course the music was very relaxing, composed and performed by willy I presume!

Great painting and a very lovely walk, everything is so beautiful with all that moss on it. I have never eaten a chantarel, i probably didn't spell that right but oh well. But i love muerrels but my disability won;t let me go in the woods and hunt mushrooms anymore, it was a good way for the husband and to take a break from the children. lol I think this is my favorite painting so far I LOVE IT
Sarah, the shadow of the dragonfly is so 3 dimensional that she looks like she could fly away. I love the delicate panels in the wings with the sharp watercolor pencil. Perfect! And the shading around the outgrowths on the top of the mushroom look like they are really raised up. What a perfect combination with the green Dragonfly and mushroom. I also like chanterelles. With a bit of butter, garlic on a fine pasta with a glass of white wine.
I'd love to have the knowledge to pick edible mushrooms and another great painting! Bet that slug timelapse took a while 😳 Sounds like a WW2 dogfight happened above you at the end!
Haha it was a very slow filming moment 🤣 Or maybe just a very quick highland slug…😜 Willie has been a very good foraging teacher, but we mainly stick to the easily identifiable ones. There are so many mushrooms out there it would be impossible to know them all. The planes were flying so low - it was amazing but scary!
I've been lucky to TWICE see a rainbow that touched the ground, & despite looking REALLY hard, wasn't lucky enough to see the pot-o'-gold. Darn!---Wow, you showed the bookstore I went into on our Bus Tour Stop! I bought a book there that I'd been wanting to find to add to my library!---I loved the facial expressions when the planes buzzed overhead!
There’s plenty of rainbows here in Scotland and we kind of did find our pot of gold…en chanterelles! I love the bookshops there! I made sure to show them just for you 😊
Sarah this was a beautiful video. I've been collecting mushrooms for many years. This last 20 has been pretty skimpy because Alberta is experiencing a drought. About four years ago we had a very wet year and I was amazed at how many different species popped up! I picked Portabellos, huge Chanterelles, oyster mushrooms! I found Turkey Tail for tea, your regular Meadow mushrooms and one large bunch of Brick Topped Mushrooms I had never seen before. I also took a lot of pictures of small puffballs and fungus. This is favorite thing to do, so thank you for taking us along.
Oodles and oodles of mushrooms! I love your painting and I don't see anything wrong with using a colored pencil to get those fine lines. It worked very well. We live close to a stream and get dragonflies in the summer, so I love that you included the dragonfly with the mushroom. Cheers!
Thanks!! I love dragonflies - I'd love to photograph & paint one of the really brightly coloured ones someday. I've seen green & black striped and electric blue, but never close or long enough to take a photo!
We usually keep them for a maximum of 2 or 3 days in the fridge before they go past their best - in a breathable container (not plastic) and some kitchen roll on top to stop them drying out. If we have too many to eat in that time we also dry them using a dehydrator and they can be stored in jars for months 😊👍 My favourite way of cooking them is super simple - fry them on a highish heat until the water has evaporated and then add butter and some garlic. So nice on toast or in risottos 🥰

When I was younger, probably before you were born, my father and I would pick chanterelles and sell them to local mushroom buyers. We would go into the coast hills of Oregon, USA and find them all over out in the woods. We were told to be sure to cut the mushroom so more would grow back, is that true? All mushrooms are incredible to photograph, and I found one that grows on an oak tree in our yard, a huge one seen in my videos with our deer, that is beneficial to health. Believe it or not, it was my cats that pointed it out to me. They were licking the white underside of this light brown woody fungus and I had to see why. Come to find out it can be ground up and added to foods and is quite good for us. How the cats knew it was good for them is why mother nature amazes me, they just knew. That's what I get for commenting while I watch, I didn't think cutting them was better, I guess the buyer back in the 80's may not have known but he sure thought he did. Thanks for answering my question before even knowing what it was!🤣
Haha! Yes, I think that is a common mis-conception about mushrooms, so I wanted to explain why we pick instead of cutting. Possibly the buyer preferred to get them all nicely cut (we always do it for ones that we are selling, so they are clean & presentable). I can never stop photographing mushrooms...they are just so beautiful and every one is unique!
Count yourselves lucky! We weren’t as bad as down south, but it hardly rained for weeks here in Fife. Everything turned brown, so it was lovely to get out into the west where it was still green!
Fabulous painting, I'm always amazed at your talent but this time you totally blew me away. The dragonfly's wings are so tiny in design and you managed to bring them to life along with the head and every teeny tiny little hair on it's legs. I am always fascinated with mushrooms and how there are so many different types. Good to see Jack out with you on second trip. So lovely out there and I bet it was peaceful and relaxing while hunting for mushrooms. Your painting with Dragon fly and mushroom came out great!

As long as they are growing wild and you are picking for personal consumption, you don’t need permission! It’s a little different to the rest of the Uk, as here in Scotland there’s no law of trespass 😊
@@shewalksshepaints I have a small wood,just a few acres,which I planted myself over 30+ years. I would not be cock-a-hoop if someone came in with baskets and nicked my mushrooms. And you did say you intended to sell some of them. I also have sloes and damsons…..and small spruce trees,some of which have been rustled at previous Christmas times. I have hazels and am about to plant walnuts.What do you suggest?
@@hotelsierra86 Yes - if picking for commercial sales you do need to get landowners permission :) Sorry to hear that people have been picking your produce - if you planted them on your own land, that does count as theft - definitely not responsible foraging. We would never pick anything that has obviously been planted by someone for the produce and we don't go into private gardens. Wild mushrooms are trickier to police, as they can't really be cultivated - they grow where they choose to grow! Responsible foraging does mean leaving enough for someone else to find, which is what we always do.
@@shewalksshepaints Thanks for the reply. We have had a bit of bother over the years,however I bought 1200 hawthorn whips and planted them around the perimeter. See what that does. As for mushrooms,I intend to introduce chanterelle mycelium into the coniferous part of the woods. We have several mushrooms that I can identify,and a lot I can’t, but no chanterelles. I have decided not to tell you the location. Sorry,couldn’t resist that. Happy hunting and nice to talk to you.
This was such a beautiful video, we got amazing drone shots, but you've also got an eye for the beauty in the little things, like the beasties, that amazing web, and the dew drops, it looks like a beautiful way to spend a day. Your painting was just amazing, the pencil lines looked brilliant as the lines in the wings, so intricate! Do you dry or can any of those mushrooms for storage to use later? Jack had a wonderful time when he got to go. Ticks are the reason I stay out of the woods here. Deer sometimes come to my yard to eat my outside plants and apples from my trees. Deer leave ticks behind everywhere they go. I had to stop feeding the wild birds in my carport; because, ticks travel on birds to places where they can drop down on something warm blooded. Your painting is beautiful and wonderful. The Dragonflies and mushrooms we have here look different. I could never tell the difference between a mushroom and a toadstool. Toadstools are poisonous; so, I buy my mushrooms at the food store. Thank you for this interesting video.
Ticks are horrible! Fortunately we mostly get the smaller kind here - deer ticks are huge and very nasty 😫 We do dry mushrooms if we get a big haul - but still have a couple of jars from last year to get through!

Come to find out it can be ground up and added to foods and is quite good for us. How the cats knew it was good for them is why mother nature amazes me, they just knew.
That's what I get for commenting while I watch, I didn't think cutting them was better, I guess the buyer back in the 80's may not have known but he sure thought he did. Thanks for answering my question before even knowing what it was!🤣
Haha! Yes, I think that is a common mis-conception about mushrooms, so I wanted to explain why we pick instead of cutting. Possibly the buyer preferred to get them all nicely cut (we always do it for ones that we are selling, so they are clean & presentable). I can never stop photographing mushrooms...they are just so beautiful and every one is unique!

Count yourselves lucky! We weren’t as bad as down south, but it hardly rained for weeks here in Fife. Everything turned brown, so it was lovely to get out into the west where it was still green!
Fabulous painting, I'm always amazed at your talent but this time you totally blew me away. The dragonfly's wings are so tiny in design and you managed to bring them to life along with the head and every teeny tiny little hair on it's legs. I am always fascinated with mushrooms and how there are so many different types. Good to see Jack out with you on second trip. So lovely out there and I bet it was peaceful and relaxing while hunting for mushrooms. Your painting with Dragon fly and mushroom came out great!
That walk was very interesting. Glad Jack got to participate in part of it. The painting is beautiful as always. I loved the use of the pencil for the delicate lines on the wings. Delightful!
who prints your cards?
I do all my own prints, but my notecards are done by the local printer here on Skye 😊

I take it you have to get the landowners permission before you pick their mushrooms.
As long as they are growing wild and you are picking for personal consumption, you don’t need permission! It’s a little different to the rest of the Uk, as here in Scotland there’s no law of trespass 😊
@@shewalksshepaints I have a small wood,just a few acres,which I planted myself over 30+ years. I would not be cock-a-hoop if someone came in with baskets and nicked my mushrooms. And you did say you intended to sell some of them. I also have sloes and damsons…..and small spruce trees,some of which have been rustled at previous Christmas times. I have hazels and am about to plant walnuts.What do you suggest?
@@hotelsierra86 Yes - if picking for commercial sales you do need to get landowners permission :) Sorry to hear that people have been picking your produce - if you planted them on your own land, that does count as theft - definitely not responsible foraging. We would never pick anything that has obviously been planted by someone for the produce and we don't go into private gardens. Wild mushrooms are trickier to police, as they can't really be cultivated - they grow where they choose to grow! Responsible foraging does mean leaving enough for someone else to find, which is what we always do.
@@shewalksshepaints Thanks for the reply. We have had a bit of bother over the years,however I bought 1200 hawthorn whips and planted them around the perimeter. See what that does. As for mushrooms,I intend to introduce chanterelle mycelium into the coniferous part of the woods. We have several mushrooms that I can identify,and a lot I can’t, but no chanterelles. I have decided not to tell you the location. Sorry,couldn’t resist that. Happy hunting and nice to talk to you.

This was such a beautiful video, we got amazing drone shots, but you've also got an eye for the beauty in the little things, like the beasties, that amazing web, and the dew drops, it looks like a beautiful way to spend a day.
Your painting was just amazing, the pencil lines looked brilliant as the lines in the wings, so intricate!
And that spitfire at the end sounded like it would rattle your bones if you were standing where you were!

Do you dry or can any of those mushrooms for storage to use later? Jack had a wonderful time when he got to go. Ticks are the reason I stay out of the woods here. Deer sometimes come to my yard to eat my outside plants and apples from my trees. Deer leave ticks behind everywhere they go. I had to stop feeding the wild birds in my carport; because, ticks travel on birds to places where they can drop down on something warm blooded. Your painting is beautiful and wonderful. The Dragonflies and mushrooms we have here look different. I could never tell the difference between a mushroom and a toadstool. Toadstools are poisonous; so, I buy my mushrooms at the food store. Thank you for this interesting video.
Ticks are horrible! Fortunately we mostly get the smaller kind here - deer ticks are huge and very nasty 😫 We do dry mushrooms if we get a big haul - but still have a couple of jars from last year to get through!
Well that was just a blast! I've never been mushroom foraging, but have always wanted to do that. It was gorgeous where you were. I was happy to hear that somewhere, amidst the world-wide droughts, there were still places that got rain. I'm glad you found the mushrooms you wanted, they look amazing. Your painting is stunning!
