  • It’s not Hanukkah without a game of dreidel. It is so much fun to play and it’s an easy game to teach to others. It’s not a Chanukah party with out someone chanting “gimmel, gimmel”. So get your latkes cooking, light your menorah, find some gelt, and let’s play.
It’s time for an amazing Hanukkah collaboration with some other great Jewish moms. Check out all of their videos here:

Loved learning about the game. My mother typically chooses a different game each year for our family to play at Christmas, and this year we are going to play the Dreidel game. My mother also bought the gold choco coins. Personally, I'd rather play with $5.00 bills, HA, but the matriarch is the big boss at Christmas. Go figure? A predominantly Catholic family playing the Dreidel game on Christmas day. I can think of no better way to share and understand a simple and fun Jewish cultural norm.

@@12yearssober literally not true, but whatever. I was born into it, I know multiple converts, every Rabbi you ask that's not a nutjob can tell you there's no difference between converts and people born to Jewish mothers. Plus, what about patrilineal Jews, who Reform and Reconstructionist Judaism recognize as Jewish without needing to convert? You're wildly misinformed and putting somebody down for no reason.

I grew up in Baltimore Maryland and I had a lot of Jewish friends and I remember when Hanukkah come around I would go up their house and seemed like to me we had matzah and lentil soup and it was good but it was explained to me it was part of their religious part of Hanukkah but with that said we used to play with the dreidel but I had a hard time understanding what the symbols meant and I never really learned until you taught me today and now I live in the mountains of Virginia and pretty much a hillbilly but I can't help but think back to those days when I had so much fun playing with them and at Hanukkah it was just fun for a city boy.
Thank you for teaching me how to what the symbols are
    the symbols are.
I'm going online I'm going to buy me a dreidel I will draw a picture of the symbols and I will get my grandchildren together and we are going to play with the dreidel and sing the dreidel song and I will tell him the story when I was a child and I'm sure they will enjoy it and it's a funny thing we have a plan outside in a pot and it has a lot of those flat marbles on the top and I think we are going to go out there and pick a lot of amount but I hope grandma don't find out because she ain't going to like it but we going to have those and we're going to play and we're going to have fun!
Oh yeah, pray you have a Happy Sabbath this weekend!

Those flat marbles are beautiful and very popular with the preschool set for making hanukiyot or pretend ones with play doh these days. Great suggestions, Marti!
For older kids or grown ups, I love using real coins for more high stakes play time. I even get a roll of dollar coins that we play with again and again! You could also use leftover foreign currency.

My moms side of the family on her dads side is all Jewish ethnically and religiously. But my grandma raised her Christian so I had no idea I was ethnically Jewish until adulthood. I was never taught anything about the religion either which is sad bc without Judaism I couldn’t even be Christian. My grandpa always went to synagogue on high holy days but I just thought it was something peculiar to him. My great grandparents immigrated from Russia and only spoke Yiddish. But my grandpa wanted to forget it all and therefore never talked about it. So I grew up knowing nothing about my Jewish roots 😢 After watching this video my 4 kids are having so much fun playing the dreidel game ❤ Thank you!
