THANK YOU GLEN. And our lovely, "ghost" narrator. I majored in art history so seeing the architecture and the prince's tomb made me desire to add Verona to my Italian- if I win a lottery- around the world in 80 days adventure! What a inspired way to present a woman I thought was fiction. You just sold another copy! Namaste, Z

I ❤'d this story, & Shakespeare's writing was awesome. They said the same thing about Cinderella. Yes stories were altered, but their origins did come from somewhere. In fact, Cinderella is very much a true story as supported by a German Queens letters known as the Cindrellon. The queen read these letters to her son Prince William. Cindrellon was the daughter to a wood cutter. She attended a ball where she met her real life prince charming. Here, her name was altered too, my point is they did exist. ⚔🛡👑🏹❤

Cendrillon (Cinderella) is an opera -described as a "fairy tale"-in four acts by Jules Massenet to a French libretto by Henri Caïn based on Perrault 's 1698 version of the Cinderella fairy tale.
The first literary European version of Cinderella was published in Italy by Giambattista Basile in his Pentamerone in 1634. The version that is most widely known in the English-speaking world was published in French by Charles Perrault in Histoires ou contes du temps passé in 1697. The Brothers Grimm version came out in 1812.
The oldest accepted version is the story of Rhodopis (recounted by the Greek geographer Strabo sometime between around 7 BC and AD 23) is about a Greek slave girl who marries the king of Egypt. It is usually considered to be the earliest known variant of the Cinderella story.

Wait- she was born in 1284 but died in 1302... So she was actually around EIGHTEEN when she died, not thirteen-fourteen, as Shakespeare wrote. Damn, why the HECK did he put THAT in there then? Were Elizabethan Men really so...

To those who really believe that Romeo and Juliet walked the streets of Verona here is the prologue of the novel verses reality.
“Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.”
This is true, these two families (Montecchi , Cappelletti) truly existed in Verona and were known in history as being rival. Their buildings, private cemeteries were found.
“From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life;”
This is not true, but only in Shakespeare’s imagination, not even the slightest piece of evidence was ever found that this pair of star-crossed lovers (Romeo and Juliet) truly existed in Verona and certainly they were never connected to the above-mentioned families, but it is so easy to believe it because such a great novel is attached to existing buildings in Verona and therefore promotes tourism. I also believed it at first. Tourism eventually decided to make “Juliet’s coffin” in red.
By the way, how can anyone take such an acute novelist as William Shakespeare too seriously?

This is a joke, but I am also making a point: so somebody writes a play, Romeo and Juliet, and it includes murder, arguments over what?, a way overdone feud, and 2 suicides over fear and extreme emotion, and that is supposed to be romantic, entertaining, and interesting? I do not think so. I wrote 3 books, and maybe they will not be nearly as well known as the above mentioned play because not enough people died in my books. Regards, Hollie Jean Huff

@@milkofthehoboveryhobo1301 There are a whole lot of folks tales that traveled (in various version) all over the planet. They are not necessarily based on real stories. A lot of Shakespeare's works were essentially fan-fic of earlier stories. Romeo and Juliet is a much better version of the tale of Pyramis and Thisbe (which Shakespeare made fun of in A Midsummer Night's Dream)
The story of Pyramus and Thisbe (the prototype for R & J) was written down by Ovid (composed in 1361-62) about a century before Shakespeare but the oldest English version is the one by Geoffrey Chaucer (1380s) in his The Legend of Good Women.
The oldest accepted version is the story of Romeo and Juliet (aka "Pyramis and Thisbe" and many others) is that of of Rhodopis (recounted by the Greek geographer Strabo sometime between around 7 BC and AD 23) and it is about a Greek slave girl who marries the king of Egypt.
