  • When you picture a vacation in Finland, what does your imagination conjure up? Do you think of frosted trees, snowy landscapes, and starry night skies? Winter is a lovely time to visit this spectacular country, but come summer when the weather thaws and the flowers bloom, Finland transforms into something else altogether.
    Located in northern Europe and bordering Sweden, Norway and Russia, this country is home to Lapland, some of the planet's most-mindblowing nature and of course, the midnight sun. Finland is among the few places in the world where this astronomical occurrence takes place, as a quarter of the country lies north of the Arctic Circle. It's one of the best reasons to visit Finland in the summer, imagine exploring Finland's exciting cities and attractions below a sun that never sets!
    Join John as he begins his journey in the capital of Helsinki. This city is known for its remarkable architectural designs, beautiful islands, and delicious food. From Helsinki, you can hop onboard an overnight sleeper train to Rovaniemi, which is where Santa Claus lives!
    Located in the Arctic Circle, along with exploring the hometown of Christmas' poster boy, you can see reindeer in the wild and the official markings of the Arctic Circle. The beautiful forested nature areas of this region aren't bad on the eyes either. You can even go foraging for a supper of fresh salmon and wild blueberries. The best thing about this part of Finland? You will meet the cutest Siberian Husky puppies and experience a moose safari.
    Saariselkä, a resort village in northern Finland, is the perfect spot to see the midnight sun in all its glory. Watch as it barely touches the horizon before rising again. It's truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
    Your journey will come to an end in Turku, by sampling local delicacies, sailing around the archipelago ad discovering some fascinating history. It's the perfect way to say farewell. Join John on his summer adventure to Finland or better yet, head over to TourRadar and book your own!

    Not trying to spoil the fun, but the red poles marking the Arctic Circle is just for a show. The real Arctic Circle goes past about one kilometer north from the Santa's Village. The Circle moves around about a dozen meters yearly anyway, so every marked line or signs for the Circle is just an approximation.

    Let me tell you something about huskies. My family has two of them, both from that exact husky park. We have a dog pen that's about three times the size of the pens that you see here, yet they only use a part of it that's slightly smaller than these pens. They don't really care about the rest of that empty space, since their actual exercise is done during the walks. The rest of their time goes by napping away. >_>

  • @hauskalainen

    Lesson Two: To pronounce ANY Finnish word or name correctly, first break it into syllables and put the stress on the first syllable and ever decreasing emphasis on each of the following syllables. A syllable boundary comes before each consonant, except when two consonants come together, in which case it is between the consonants. So Rovaniemi IS pronounced as RO.va.nie.mi and not as I heard it ro.van.mi. The syllable NIE contains the dipthong IE (a vowel made up of two different vowels... you make the i sound and the e sound separately but run them into one another, just as we do with the English word pIEr). Helsinki is pronounced as HEL.sin.ki and Turku as TUR.ku (with each u in Finnish standard pronunciatuon sounding like a shortened version of the oo sound in the English word POO).

    • @johnbroadley535
      @johnbroadley535 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the info! Pronounciation is certainly not one of my strongest points! I think i tried to pronounce it a different way each time in the hopes that if would have been right at least once :). Hope you enjoyed the video!

    Name of place where you ate wildberries ?

  • @timomastosalo
    @timomastosalo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    11:32 The reindeers are not wild - notice this white one has a bell around the neck, and reindeer owners would know from its earmarks who owns it. Though they do move around free until the time the owners herd them into fences, count the young ones, decide which ones are taken for food or hides etc. Even the bones are your, and I'm not sure what they do with the entrails, but dogs would love them.
    The owners can track them down pretty easy, because in the wild they have certain rhythm whereabouts they roughly are moving, depending on the time of year. It could also be nowadays, that they have a satellite tracker at their neck: at least one in the herd. Look at the plastic tube the white one has - think there's the tracker, plus maybe something else.

    • @johnbroadley535
      @johnbroadley535 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3
