Congrats Russell and yes, Jiu jitsu strips away everything superficial. Everyone, deep down, just wants to live, eat, laugh and see their loved ones happy. Nothing else REALLY matters.
In BJJ we all just want to breathe and get out from under that sweaty belly of the 250 pound bluebelt. It's a great Equalizer an very humbling in its complexity and beauty.

this is so cool! I also started jiu jitsu this year - after having NEVER done anything like it in my life. I avoided sports of every kind, quit the only things that semi worked out (dance, music) and was too afraid to approach the things that interested me (gymnastics for example). The community has been amazing for me & my recovery. I feel strong, not just physically but in my spirit, in my energy. I feel empowered by jiu jitsu & I keep going back to it. love that we're on this journey together

don't give up now if you like it, your body will need some time to get used to, but it will get confident and it will improve in the meantime too. Eat clean and you will also see surprising changes. After a while, only the positive side will remain, and that point could injure you due to excess confidence. my 2 cents

I get that in martial arts clubs generally. I'm Muslim and walked into a Wing Chun club in my hijab and baggy outfit. Ppl did look at me surprised. But literally in a matter of minutes I spoke to a few ppl and was part of the class. I do have to make more if an effort introducing myself and take on a more 'social' personal to build that bridge, but it happens quicker than people might think. We do both Japanese and Gracie Jujitsu as well. Less aggressive on some ways than other martial arts so I like the spectrum of styles that can be used depending on the situation/your opposition. Good stuff :)

Congratulations on earning your blue belt Russell. I also find that when people are gathered to learn something, that they often get on together. Tensions often arise with people when they feel they have something to lose, or indeed gain, that's when "weapons" like skin colour, religion, beliefs, ethnicity are deployed, in other words, differences. When people are gathered together for the same purpose then peace usually reigns.

Yes! Congrats again! I know I usually come on here with questions and advice, but today I just want to say thank you. Firstly for your recent video in the midst of a breakup I had. Because of your words, I found the resolve to pick myself up and focus on my future so I could pass my board exam the next day. And secondly I want to thank you for inspiring me to start working on my ground game again. I can get punched all day in Muay Thai and be fine but so much yucky past stuff comes up once it goes down to the ground. I shut down if I have to roll with dudes. So I avoided it for a while. But, now, seeing you get your blue belt really motivated me to work toward facing my fears. I started up this week with a women’s class. It’s baby steps, but it’s something! Thanks for the inspiration and for the ongoing words of wisdom! 💚

Hey Russell, I think It is awesome that you have attained the status of a blue belt in BJJ. It takes a whole lot of not quitting to get there. It is one of a few humps on the road of a martial artist you will over come. Always be proud of it and seek out as much knowledge in the field of martial arts to get the full experience. I have stand up videos you could learn from on my channel for free. I will be re-doing them with better lighting soon, but if you can get past the shitty quality, they are practical to learn from. Keep going and you will rise beyond a black belt one day. -The Last Great Sayian

My life has been completely transformed by inclusive martial arts. Learning karate helped me to be mindful and overcome sensory overload that came with autism, which was the cause of a lot of my anxiety.
It made me more at ease with being around people… which was the cause of a lot of my anxiety. Now I'm a coach, and in coaching I found a side of me that was assertive, like for the first time I felt like I could affect positive changes in other people’s lives. Like what Russel always says about mentoring other people being important to ones own recovery. When done right, a martial arts lesson brings people a sense of achievement, togetherness, emotional wellbeing, everything really.

My favorite line: “…There are such things as positive hierarchies and structures as long as it’s tied to fairness, responsibility, and duty”. I’m already a slightly bigger fan of structures and institutions than it seems Brand is lol. But I loved the clarity in his thought; it’s totally true and a good test for assessing different entities like a new church you’re considering joining, a friend group you’ve just met, or a key political body or government.

Congrats! I'm a blue belt myself, kinda mid way to purple. Many quit at blue. It takes a bit to get to purple so don't quit! Cuz once you get to purple you're definitely legit bjj player.

Still sounds so strange someone I've been following for so long now using terms like 'side control' and 'rear naked choke'! Big congrats on the belt, you've really nailed what's important about BJJ: community, equality, diversity and dedication. Enjoy the new challenge...and next level of beatdowns!

I've always been active physically for various health reasons and have done so through various sports, usually with some sort of competitive aspect to it.
In my previous sports incarnation, I spent a lot of time cycling on the road. There is a constant shift in the pack hierarchy during a ride based on who is rested, who is fit, who is having an off day, etc. There is no way of really recognizing who is weak & strong, so the group dynamics are quite nasty as the group hierarchy is constantly being shuffled and reshuffled.
I spend my time on the bjj mats now and I find having the hierarchy more structured (with belts) makes for a much more personable and pleasant environment. It's interesting that a group of men who are training in combat techniques and methods to kill one another have much better manners than a similar group riding bicycles. I feel having a defined group placement has a lot to do with this.
In general, I think BJJ does a good job of defining their hierarchy on merit. Yes, a 25 year old black belt is a significantly different person than a 55 year old one, but neither has taken an easy path and that we can all respect.
There's also a personal aspect of rolling with someone. You end up knowing them in a very personal way even if you know nothing of the person's life or background. I think this is the type of contact which we've lost with our over-sanitized, over-protected, outwardly-pleasant-but-inwardly-resentful society. Strangely, it seems that learning to kill also teaches one a profound respect for life.

Tae Kwon Do and Brazillian Juijitsu are some of the most wonderful entres into Martial Arts. The Masters are the results, knowing what the Master is, is the result, but at every level, it proves that it is so much better to Participate, than not to..)d

TKD is one of the worst possible "entres" into realistic self defence. The difference is that TKD developed as an art in isolation. BJJ developed in Vale Tudo, and should really be called martial science. What you said is insulting to any BJJ guy. We know the difference.

Well done mate. Its such a tough thing to describe a jits journey to non-rollers. Even in comparison to other martial arts. The personal growth, satisfaction, fitness, belief, confidence one receives on the mats is so rewarding and transfers into all aspects of our personal life. But yes, you're about to get mauled...
