    Steve Ramsden here and this week I’m going to show you how I added myself into a historical film, dressed as a World War 2 pilot!
    So earlier this year I was contacted by a filmmaker who is making a documentary about the “Dam Busters”, the famous group of Royal Air Force pilots who bombed several German dams in a daring raid during World War 2. I was asked if I wanted to appear as one of the many pilots in the historical reconstruction sequences. So I agreed and was loaned a fantastic authentic RAF pilot’s costume to wear, and I had some fun playing a member of 617 Squadron while we filmed some various scenes from different angles to add me into the film.
    This got me thinking I could try another fun green screen experiment similar to my previous videos:
    How to Add Yourself to Movies: • How to ADD YOURSELF in...
    Add Yourself to Historical Footage like Forrest Gump: • Forrest Gump Effect Tu...
    I found the perfect shot in the famous 1955 film The Dam Busters, which had much better quality footage of RAF pilots dressed exactly the same as me. So, I decided to try and join them using my Adobe After Effects skills. The first thing I did was to load the two takes into After Effects, find the sections I wanted, and scale down the shot of me to a good size using the Position and Scale controls, and place it above the clip from the film.
    Next, because I wan’t moving very much, I could just draw a simple square mask over my figure to remove the edges showing the studio.
    Next I could remove the green screen from the studio shot using Keylight. Then select the green colour to remove, change the view to Screen Matte, adjust the values under Clip Black and White settings until it’s a pretty good key, and then switch back to Intermediate Result to see how it looks.
    Next I could add Lumetri Color and just do some simple alterations to match the other pilots. First I turned down the saturation to zero as we need black and white, and then increased the contrast and took the shadows down a little, and pretty soon I had a decent match.
    To track the movement of the shot, I took the original layer and opened the Tracker panel. I selected the pack lying on the ground as a good point of reference, attached the track point and then analysed the clip forwards to see the movement. Then I applied this movement to a new Null object, and then parented the figure layer to this Null object. Now the figure has exactly the same subtle moves as the scene behind it and so it looks better.
    Next I had a go at creating a subtle shadow for my character as well. To do this I duplicated the figure layer, turned on the 3D controls and was able to twist the figure around so that it looked flat. Then I could turn the exposure right down in Lumetri Color until it was completely dark, and line it up with the feet. Then by dropping the opacity right down and adding a blur, you get a pretty good instant basic shadow which moves in the same way as your character, because it’s the same footage! You can also duplicate this layer and with a different mask shape, add an even darker area closer to the character so that the shadow appears to get fainter the further away it gets.
    Finally an important detail was to try and match the image quality of the original film. In the end I did this by adding the Noise effect, which I increased a little and unticked ‘Color Noise’, also the Dust and Scratches effect, and a little bit of camera lens blur. I also actually went back into Keylight and increased Screen Softness a little, to try and match the character’s edge with what the other pilots look like.
    Finally this guy behind me is smoking and the smoke blows towards the camera in the wind, and it looked strange not to see this in front of my character too. So I added some subtle pre-keyed smoke over my layer at exactly the same moment. And then I was done and it was time to look back at the finished result, which I cut together with a few other shots from the film to make it feel more like a proper sequence.
    So that’s how you can have some fun adding yourself into a historical film or some old footage. And if you want a crash course in how to use After Effects like I do, my mini-course is available over at diymoviemaking.com or via the link below. It's over 30 video lessons to get a complete beginner up and running quickly with the program Adobe After Effects to get results like I do in my VFX work, and it even comes with a downloadable selection of my footage to practice with. Happy moviemaking and I’ll see you next time!

      Hey Steve big dr who fan here. I tried replicating your regeneration effect tutorial and I found another way you could do it. By increasing the birth and death size on the particles and adding effects like vector and radial fast blur, tweaking the settings a bit you get a good effect. You can than duplicate the layer and add a white tint to it with the tint effect. I want to thank you for making that tutorial because without it I would have been able to put my own little spin on it. Thank you Steve.

    Amazing!
    I was trying to do this - editing myself into the ghostbusters afterlife trailer - but I don't have a light that is extendable (just a lamp and flashlights)
    Nor do I have a big enough green screen for most of the shots (to be able to see from my feet to my head I would need to have the camera further away from me. To have the light behind me slightly as in most of the shots, I would need to be pretty far away from the green screen. Even further if I need the lamp to be out of the shot to reduce lens flare. Because of this, the perspective means the green screen is too small).
    Any tips on how I could make this work?
    P.S. I'm filming upstairs which has a sloped/triangular ceiling. it is 2 meters high at the highest point (3 feet on the left and right - the lowest points), 4 meters front to back and 3 meters wide. I have a tripod so I can move my camera around.
    Thank you!

      Hello. First of all, you have to realize that in order to film a scene in a green screen, you need to light two things: the subject and the background, (for that you need at least two lights for each, total four). Place the first two lights close to the screen on both sides and move them around until you have no hot spots (you may see that by lowering your exposure). NEVER PUT THEM BEHIND, FOR YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO USE CHROMA KEY IN POST. Use the other two lights for your subject also on both sides, but closer to your actor. You may put a reflector on the front so that the lighting is even (a bedsheet can do the job pretty well). Now, it is very difficult to do all that with just lamps, I personally recommend you buy an Amazon lighting kit: I believe they are about 70 dollars, which is very little considering what professional lights cost. But if you can't do that, make sure that your light bulbs are white and well diffused.
      Now moving on to your other problem, which is that you don't have enough green screen. For that I recommend you use a telephoto lens so that the screen looks bigger than it actually is. If you don't have one either, you can always mask your subject in post, but that is very tedious and time-consuming, and would make the use of a green screen unnecessary.
      So in conclusion my advice is: use side lighting for the background and the subject and fill the front with a reflector * (note that depending on the background you will add is how your actor's lighting should be), and use a tele lens.
      I don't know if you understood what I said, and if you didn't it's totally fine. In that case you can search the following topics on TH-cam (there are lots of videos that can answer your questions): "how to light a green screen", "basic lighting techniques", "how do telephoto lenses change the background".
      Have a nice day!

      @PaulyEditz sorry no Buddy. Maybe can you explain me, how this Movie costs 200 Million Dollar? Is just full of CGI. Yeah it's a Virus out there. But in the 90s, you had go into a real Jungle, on a real Boat or Arena. The Movies made more or less in real Houses. But this Movie? All Locations more or less in the Studio. Ok I can you explain, where are 50 Million Bucks. The Cast alone has 50, the Director 10 Million. I don't like this Movie. This Movie is more for start, and play on your Phone or talk with somebody.

    • @rodrigolandaromero
      @rodrigolandaromero 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Samjimmyjoe I beg your pardon, but are you actually comparing a 15 sec VFX shot that is badly lit (the lighting isn’t the same as the original film) to a full length well done movie? Do you know anything about cinematography at all?

    • @Samjimmyjoe
      @Samjimmyjoe 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rodrigolandaromero hey Rodrigo. The Fact is that Steve thinks on every step. The Light, the Shadows and so much small Details, to make the Clip more realistic. Tell me Rodrigo: Do you like an Evening in the Cinema, or seeing a Movie at Home, if you know that the Full Movie was produced for 200 Million Dollar, but the Movie is full of CGI? Have you saw the Movie? How often did you see Gal Gadot? Her Cameratime was to short in comparison to the other Cast. I understand now why Ryan Reynolds needs a Break, because he's every time in the same Role. The Role of a Comedian with funny patter. But he can play more than the funny Guy. Check or remember at the Movie Burried. ;)

    • @rodrigolandaromero
      @rodrigolandaromero 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Samjimmyjoe It is curious you say shadow and light are “small details”. The whole point of having a green screen is that the subject (besides being isolated from the background) is well lit. A good effect without the appropriate lighting is pointless (for example: imagine filming a sunset scene with a big frontal white key light. That would be wrong, because in real life the sun would act as an orange backlight. It’s basic, I’m surprised people don’t realise it). Also, I think Steve filmed in a different focal length, so he looks wider, but it is understandable that he used a tele lens for the small screen to cover a larger area.
      The participation time of an actress has nothing to do with the quality of a film, which mainly depends on good scriptwriting, acting, shots and effects, and “Red Notice” isn’t of course the best of its kind, but it is well done, at least better than this video.
      PS: If you didn’t understand the terms I used, please do a bit of research in cinematography.

    I do 3D Modelling but never really tried VFX, maybe I should give it a try, cause it looks like a lot of fun. And although AE is probably pretty complex and has a steep learning curve, I have to say, I could follow the tutorial without ever opened AE. The steps were quite intuitive for me and looked to me like a mix of Photoshop and a node based workflow from Houdini or Blender

      AE and Photoshop are made by the same company so naturally there will be some similarities if you are used to Photoshop; they are also, of course, both layer-based workflows. If you are looking for more node-based Visual FX/Special FX you can try using DaVinci Resolve Fusion (it is free), as it is a purely node based Visual Effects editor that works a lot like After Effects and lets you merge 2D and 3D elements into the same final composite.
      Though workflows vary in Hollywood studios, you can also try more professional Software like "Nuke" and combine it with 3D modeling software like Maya. Unreal Engine 5 has also been gaining traction in the film industry.
      Adobe's products do have quite a bit of use in the professional film industry though, so they are close to an industry standard.
      Special FX can be fun. Hope that helps!
