Thanks for posting the video! My smog kit came today, only other mod I did was change the exhaust to a FMF powercore 4 and it shaved like 8 pounds from the stock exhaust and gave it a lot more power.
After studying your walkthrough here about 15 times, I banged out this mod in 10 minutes. The instructions that come with the kit suck. You laid this out well. I agree with the throttle response. Sounds cleaner, smoother too. I've got a 2013. Thanks again for this.
Thanks for the video. I purchased this same kit and the instructions got wet in transit and were un-readable. I have a 2006 as well, nice job on the video. I have Jets on order to mod the carb next. Thanks again for this, saved my day - and was super easy to do.
I am doing the same mod tonight. I also moved the battery under the seat. Installed a UNI filter and took the stock off. Installed the flat side panel so it looks more like an XRR. Pretty cool.
@Lonnie91a That would be cool if you could make all of it. I figured for the price it wasn't worth me trying to make it. I think the thing that led me to buying one the most was because there wasn't any videos on the install so I didn't know what to expect, that is why I made this video. I didn't re-jet. I left the intake and exhaust stock, some say to pull the snorkel out of the airbox but I didn't want to get into the carb until I had an exhaust. Let us know how it goes..
I have a 2007 and I'm replacing my smog kit right now. This video has really helped me out. I appreciate the help! BTW, when you replace your exhaust, you'll probably have to upgrade your jets as well. I don't know how she'll (my bike) react when I remove the smog kit, but when i put the exhaust on at first I could tell she was running way too lean and got larger jets. Maybe the removal of the smog kit makes the difference for the upgraded exhaust. I'll give you some feedback on that!
@hikertim100 That's a good deal, I know alot of guys just built their own; but for me it was my first time and I thought a kit with instructions would be the safe way to go. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
Did the mod but changed the carb to an fcr 40mm at the same time. To explain it in one word wouldn't do it justice. Just think of being with 3 of your dream girls for a weekend of pleasure.
I've done this mod. Any issues with oil in the airbox since removing the oil separater? I've had minimal amounts of oil in mine, nothing to concerning right now.
Do a spark plug reading to tell if you need to re-jet... you want a brown to light brown plug color it will probably be grey ...if that is the case go to the next jet size bigger. and then re check for plug color
Hey I need help! I've got a 2007 XR650L with: FMF Pipe, (Standard Jet Currently), FMF Needle with one setting down, Better Air filter, and removed snorkel. After removing smog kit and oil separator, my bike won't run on it's own cold. I've messed with the carb by swapping the jets and adjusting the needle over six times. I took it to two different motorcycle mechanics as well, which didn't get me much farther. Any Ideas? I shouldn't have to reinstall the smog kit right?
As long as everything is sealed up air tight you shouldn't need to. I might be possible that it's not sealed correctly and when the bike warms up and the jugs expand it makes the seal. Try adding some RVT and insure it's fully cured out before starting the bike. These bikes are cold blooded and are a bitch to get going in the morning. I had to start mine with full choke, let it run until it sounded like it would die and pull it down to 1/2 choke for a few min more until it would be okay. Some times even needed to keep the throttle on to keep it going until it warmed up. It is also hard to say with out hearing it or seeing what is happening. it could be choked out, not enough air, too much air, not enough fuel, too much fuel, valve adjustment, timing, etc... I know this is all general information but if it was working fine with the smog stuff on, than and it doesn't when you took it off. I would say re-install it and test it out and/or retrace your steps maybe there is a step that was skipped. I remember forgetting to do some stuff and had to go back and re-install. Also I didn't change anything in the carb. it was all OEM. I did remember the entire air box blowing out on me because I didn't tighten the clamp down and hand to do a repair in the lowes parking lot.
I used to be able to start the bike on full choke, then half, etc. You might be right with the air leak... Concerning the snorkel removal, when I punch the gas she wants to choke up on me. when I put it back, she sings fine. Could that be part of the charcoal system removal as well?
That sounds like it's getting flooded. When is the last time you rebuilt the carb? might be a sticking float/shut off valve (forgot what they are called). Or the needle isn't correct ether way it sounds like the carb is getting to much fuel than it can burn.
Hi. I have a question. My 2009 Honda xr650l is doing a sound when it compress, it sounds like an air explosion. Do you have an idea why it's making it? do you think it can be the carburetor or by taking out this IMS baja will resolve it. You can see in my video title air explosion sound what I ment.
I saw your video. Explain what you are doing when the sound is made. It almost sounds like a compression break or it is choked out when you twist the throttle. However I can't tell what your hands and feet are doing.
Thank you for your answer and willing to help me. The sound it's made when starts to decelerate, the explosions sounds louder in motor higer evolutions. In the video I was going down on the hill. I'm not using the brakes or twisting the throttle. The bike only has 3000 miles.
From what you are telling me, it sounds like you are compression braking. Basically when you are going down hill, you are using the engine's compression and back pressure to slow the bike down. I heavy use compression breaking on trucks, bikes and cars. You will see big trucks or trucks with heavy loads using this technique when going down hills so they don't burn up the breaks. When I lived in Washington I regularly used compression braking, however no that I live in Louisiana where there are no hills I only use it for stopping quickly. Basically I will grab both breaks and drop a gear, if I feel the breaks aren't slowing me down enough I will let go of the clutch and the bike will almost come to a stand still. Try this.... Next time you are going down a hill, either pull in the clutch and cost down and/or shift into a higher gear. For example if in the video you are in 2nd gear not using the throttle or break, try up shifting to 3rd with out throttle or break. ***Keep in mind you will be going faster*** its all about how fast you are going, RPMs, and gear you are in that will give you that sound. So if you are now in 3rd gear going down the same hill but going faster you will notice that sound once you have reached that magic ratio of speed/RPM/gear. Hope that makes since, its a little hard to explain for me. In short what you are telling me and how I understand it, it is normal. Hope that helps and wish I could show you first hand. Let me know what the out come is.
Thank you for the detailed instructions on what to do with the hoses ! I'll make the block off plates in my shop I have the scrap aluminum I can use. the county i live in does not have Smog inspections so I don't need this junk... emission control is a bunch of hooy anyway...global warming is going to happen anyway ,so why should we pay more for their garbage ?

@sluppps: every thing just seems smoother, like it's not restricted. throttle responce is snappy and no more lag

That's not a charcoal filter, it is an oil separater

Good, I haven't regretted it

excellent video. Makes it look easy. I am going to try to make all the block off parts myself. Any need to re-jet or anything after this?

@wipeyourfeetok Could you post a DIY video of the battery relocation?

к той штуковине на 9:57 нужно приделать что-то типо сковородки и жарить там гренки по дороге XD
so what performance are you gaining from this?
Now get yourself some new handlebars and risers and get rid of those stock bars they make the bike look like crap. LOL at least They did on mine.
I did do that
