The Carter Family- I Never Will Marry

  • Lyrics:
    One morning as I rambled all down the seashore
    The wind it did whistle, and the waters did roar
    I heard a fair damsel make a pitiful sound
    It sounded so lonesome in the waters around
    I never will marry, or be no man's wife
    I expect to live single all the days of my life
    The shells in the ocean shall be my death bed
    The fish in deep water swim over my head
    She plunged her fair body in the waters so deep
    She closed her blue eyes in the waters to sleep
    My love's gone and left me, the one I adore
    She's gone where I never will see her anymore

    I have this on a 78....so this is the first time I've heard it without the crackle of playing in on my grandfather's Victrola....as a musician, I appreciate hearing this version, but sentimentally, I miss the crackle :)

    The Carter Family were the first musical mega stars of that new communications device, the radio. The relationship of A.P. and Sarah would have been front page on the magazines at the grocery check out.

      +lamortdifficile Some things being bad does not take away from the fact that other things were good. It's sad that those days can not be revisited, but minus the bad things. Usually when people long for the good 'ol days it's only the good things they long for, not the bad things.

    Great old love lyric, sung well by Sara (especially in light of her marriage troubles with AP). I remember hearing the steel player for Sleepy LaBeef (rockabilly legend) RIP doing a nice job on this in Boston in 1978. I imagine the steeler got the song from Linda Ronstadt's version, which was also nice.

    @Acexwanderer There were lots of different versions of this song by different groups, especially during the 50's folk revival. Other versions are hard to find, but were done by Irene and Ellen Kossoy, the Philo Glee & Mandolin Society, and the Brothers Four did a dressed-up version called “Damsel’s Lament.” You could call it a traditional folk song and be fine with it.

    A lot of the old traditional songs are actually reworked Hymns, with different lyrics. For instance if you listen to "Can The Circle Be Unbroken" from The Carter Family, the melody and theme are taken from the hymn "Will The Circle Be Unbroken".

    Is this song about a lesbian? Or about a guy who lost his girl? It's unclear to me whose perspective it is?

    • @63DW89A
      @63DW89A 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      In folk music, the singer would often assume the traditional voice of the song in the interest of retaining the purity of the song. So a female singer would sing as the traditional male voice of a song, or vice versus. Today, singers will usually change the words to reflect their gender. When the Carter Family recorded these songs in the 1920's and 1930's, the old tradition was used and you will often hear Sara singing from a male perspective.

    • @87advil
      @87advil 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      63DW89A isn't wrong exactly, but these lyrics include "Nor be no man's wife," which are not from a man's perspective.

    • @63DW89A
      @63DW89A 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The lyric "nor be no man's wife" is from the "Fair Damsel" who is overheard to say, "I never will marry, nor be no man's wife I expect to live single all the days of my life", before drowning herself in sorrow at the prospect of being unmarried and alone all of her life. The song's male narrator (expressed by Sara Carter's voice) overhears and observes the suicide, and is apparently the man who rejected her, and he is now remorseful about his rejection because he expresses his sorrow at never seeing her again.

      Thank you! It makes sense now. It also gives the song such an expansive meaning. They don't write songs like this no more.

    • @63DW89A
      @63DW89A 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +mysteryjesus You are very welcome. This is a very old folk song that likely originated in the British Isles in the late 1700's as best I can discover. A.P. Carter "collected" the song in one of his travels in the mountains of Virginia, Tennessee or the Carolinas. A.P. then arranged the song to fit into the 3 minute recording time of the 78 rpm records of that time, and the Carter Family recorded this version in 1933. A problem with arranging old folk songs to fit a 3 minute recording is that some verses can be lost that make the song's story more clear. Anyway, most modern singers still follow the A.P. Carter arrangement and words. I'm glad you have discovered the original Carter Family. The Carter Family has a truly timeless sound and style that still charms a modern audience, and the 300 or so songs they recorded are genuine musical treasures for not only we Americans but our British Commonwealth cousins too!
