    Seeing locos such as this reminds me of just how good our engineers were, having the ability to fit excellent engineering into such handsome bodies.

      Yes very much so! Many countries made their own steam locos but in the early days few put so much effort on beauty and style.

    Trains ran through my back yard in Boston, Massachusetts back in the 50’s. I’d stand on the fence and could just about touch them. I waved instead. When I moved to Florida, the back yard of my rental in Safety Harbor had trains running through it. No fence, though. Right now I’m about a mile from tracks and hear trains at night.

    • @ADMIRALSCORNER
      @ADMIRALSCORNER  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They just aren't needed because all the tracks are fenced off to stop animals. Again the bell is thought to be unnecessary. In some very rare situations where tracks had run down streets to the docks where there is no other way a bell is fitted.

    • @ADMIRALSCORNER
      @ADMIRALSCORNER  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is an interesting Idea for the UK! Great Western Railway whistles are good. Some other regions have sounds rather more like hooters. None are as magnificent as the chime whistles some owners have imported and fitted. The recent newly built steam loco Tornado has one . When you compare it to its original Squeak It is much more impressive. The Flying Scotsman which is so much admired almost makes you laugh when it sounds its whistle!

      @@ADMIRALSCORNER the Nene valley railway is the only railway that can run almost all continental trains, as it was restored to the Bern gauge. Only a few continental locos can run anywhere else in Britain. As of late there is one loco at Nene valley, the slask, which is polish. However I believe there will be more locomotives restored soon. Obviously this depends on time and money.

      @ADMIRALSCORNER  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @justahillbilly7777 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fluffnose3386 There's still a few here in America, one of which is running, albeit in a different aesthetic look. Look up GSMR 1702 and you'll see what I mean. Then there's one that WAS operational, but is now stored cold, and that's TVRM 610. There's also one that's stored in a FANTASTIC cosmetic condition at the Age Of Steam Roundhouse in Ohio. There's one in Crewe, Virginia, but it's stored outside as a static exhibit, in a slightly worn condition, what'd you expect for an outdoor exhibit? Then there's the shell of an S160 in the ownership of a Maryland contractor; *I THINK* , feel free to fact check me on that; that's managed to keep it's valve gear, which is surprisingly a set of Franklin Type B poppet valve gear. The T1 Trust took a look at it to get an idea of what they'd be dealing with whenever they get the cylinders and valve gear of 5550 assembled. And finally, there's the S160 under rebuild in Alaska. Number 557 if memory serves correctly. And to both you and ADMIRALSCORNER , the S160's were never built to different sizes, just different configurations. Any of the S160's here in America could most likely run in the U.K. with little to no modification. 1702 might have to have an original S160 tender converted to hold oil applied, but other then that, I can't think of any other reason an S160 from here in the States couldn't fit the U.K. loading gauge.
