Triple Headed S160'S, The Sound Of The USA ! Superpower Weekend !

  • In this video we witness the sight and sound of THREE USATC S160s operating together for the first time in the UK since 1944, and for only the second time within preservation globally!
    Resident American Sisters nos. 5197 and 6046 will be joined by no. 2253 Omaha, which is making a flying visit courtesy of Peter Best and Dartmouth Steam Railway. The event takes place on the Churnet Valley Railway's Superpower Weekend, which is a fundraiser event, for the railway's pursuit of running trains back to the Staffordshire town of Leek !
    The main highlight of the event was the final run, where we are treated to the thunderous sound of three S160 locomotives hauling an equivalent load of 14/15 coaches in weight up the 1/45 gradient towards Ipstones. An extra diesel was added to make the train heavier and to give all three locomotives plenty of work !
    What a sound they made, I hope you enjoy the video !

    Edit: watching the 3 emerge from the tunnel and seeing the bright glow of the firebox illuminate the cabs has by far got to be the most delightful sight I’ve seen in railroading in a hot second

      @localcarthief The S160s were built by American for service in Europe, but mostly Great Britain, during WW2. Great Britain and others had a motive power shortage so so these were built. They were expected only to last the war but ended up lasting a lot longer. Kinda compare them to the Liberty Ships or the T2 Tankers, functional but not built to last.

    Soundporn, these have a very powerful exhaust beat, and being loaded up with a couple of 33's at the rear made it better.

    • @BenjaminEsposti
      @BenjaminEsposti 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Indeed! Here is the states, we call it "stack talk" ... these S160's are a bit unique compared with what I'm used to, with a poof-poof sound. Some locos here in the states are quite loud and harsh sounding:
      /watch?v=y8qryuiom6g (Yes, I know, that's in Canada, lol)
      /watch?v=WjEzExukNMs
      /watch?v=DqscywTjIS8
      /watch?v=7KSuAzGvB0Q
      Still, I love how virtually every steam loco class/type sounds different!

    • @Tom-Lahaye
      @Tom-Lahaye 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@BenjaminEsposti I watched those videos you listed, NKP 765 is making quite an impression, especially the first video after the Canadian one, thanks for listing those.
      In the UK many of the GWR classes are known for a sharp exhaust, but also a hard working black 5 has some good thrash (that's the British translation for stack talk, but also refers to a loud diesel exhaust)

    • @EeBee51
      @EeBee51 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've noticed that US made locos tend to have a more staccato beat. One of the local preservation societies has a Baldwin made loco and the difference in "note" between it and the British made locos is quite noticeable.

    • @tobys_transport_videos
      @tobys_transport_videos 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Guys, as much as you think American (and Canadian) locos might have a strong exhaust beat, in the years I've been listening to British steam locos (around 5-6 years, and I'm Australian) I have really come to notice the difference in exhaust beats and whistles as you go from railway to railway (remember that from 1923 to 1947 there were the "Big Four" railway companies, then from 1948, British Railways with its own ideas), along with a wide variation in whistles. Among the best (IMO) are the Stanier (LMS) designs such as the Black Five. Jubilee, and 8F, the Gresley A4 class (*NOT* Flying Scotswaste as it is an abortion of an A3!), and the Bulleid designed (Southern Railway) 3-cylinder Merchant Navy / West Country / Battle of Britain classes in both their original and rebuilt forms.
      Also noteworthy are a number of the Robert Riddles designed "BR Standards" which while mostly having "average" whistles, certainly had a bark to them, such as the 4MT and the 9F. I love the 9F, and in particular 92134 with its original single chimney as seen in a video of mine made at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in September 2019.

    • @Tom-Lahaye
      @Tom-Lahaye 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tobys_transport_videos I agree with what you say.
      It wasn't my opinion in my original comment that ONLY American made locos have a strong exhaust.
      But having seen and heard many loco classes in real live I can tell that the S160s are amongst the louder locos.
      But there are British built classes which gave me a good sound show, and the Black 5 is one of them, climbing out from Grosmont on the NYMR.
      The Ivatt 4MT "flying pig" is another one, and several GWR engine classes have a fairly sharp exhaust as well.
      But I have to disagree with the Bulleid 3 cylinders, although they do produce a nice 3 cylinder staccato, they aren't particularly loud.
      Funny enough is that one of the loudest locomotives in the UK also turns out to be one of the smallest, I'm not referring to the Terriers, but the sole Darjeeling class B locomotive which is preserved in the UK, when it was used on a WHR gala it did put on quite a show.
      I had some good sounding steam engines outside the UK as well, I remember a trip trough the German Eifel mountains where our train of 16 coaches was double headed by a 3 cylinder Br58 2-10-0 and 2 cylinder Br24 2-6-0, I was down in the 7th coach from the front.
      On a part of our tour we got a Br94 0-10-0 tank engine as helper from behind, and altough being at greater distance away from my window it completely overwhelmed the 2 front locos working hard, the return trip on this same train with a single Br44 2-10-0 gave me some of the finest 3 cylinder music I ever had.

    It is so cool to see the UK preserving steam locomotive power. Those American whistles were just amazing. Did not expect that. I am used to the more subtle whistles, common on European steamers.
    We here in America have our own steam locomotive preserving railroads, particularly the Union Pacific. Most other steam locomotives in the US are operated/maintained by volunteers and historical societies.
    There is definitely a sense of nostalgia when seeing and hearing steam locomotives working under their own power.

    The sound and fury of American steam power, writ large...
    If it weren't for the fact that these S160s are in the UK, I thought that these locomotives were on a heritage railroad in the Eastern United States!

      Edmund, sometimes this does happen but its added cost. Steam excursions are forever in and out of passing loops, so nothing new there. The issue for me is when they assist, most of the time I'll tolerate them, as long as they stay quiet.

    I wish I was there; excellent clips, though for me one longer passing shot further away with all 3 locos in the frame would have been perfect

    I love how every locomotive in Britain look sexy with their livery, polished copper and brass. Even the American built locomotives can be made attractive.
