Guy from South Africa here. I bought my PENN BATTLE 3 6000 in December last year. The bigger sizes come with the CNC cut brass gear. I have not had a smoother reel! The drag has an amazing sound. Definitely worth the money! My favourite reel!

Great review, could not agree more. I recently bought the new Penn Battle 3DX 2500, same bass reel with a few upgrades like brass gears and only cost a few dollars more. Incredible reel, I’ve used it for inshore trout and redfish, and it works great for bass. They are a little heavier than some others in that class due to the all metal frame and brass gears, (the brass gears weigh 2x the standard battle 3 gears) but I think the little bit more weight is a small price to pay for the durability and increased strength. Packs a lot of power in a small package. Very smooth, versatile and much easier to breakdown, clean and maintain than the more expensive sealed reels. Love it.

Its onlt the B3 6000 series and up that have the wood on Daiwa and Shimano. But saying that, the superiority and value for money is outstanding .

Thanks for the video, I wanted a size comparison before I buy the reel. I want a no-nonsense reel for stalking grass carp, and this seems the right one.

I use a penn battle III 3000 here in the Netherlands for catching carp with a light float rod. A few years ago i bought my first Penn reel and never used another brand again. Love these reels.

Love my Penn Battle III 3000. First fish I pulled in with it was a 26” red here in Galveston in the Gulf Coast. Little tank worth every penny.

Thanks for the review. I own the Penn Battle 3 3000. I use it for surf perch mostly. I found that the drag binds up and I cannot get line out. I loosened the drag up and was able to pull on the line to get the gears working. I thought this reel was sealed... your video indicated it is not. I thought all Penn's were sealed? Anyway, I hose off my reel after use in saltwater... It still works fine but I was hoping I didnt have to "baby" the reel like a fresh water reel. Thanks for the video! I may upgrade to the Spinfisher.

Penn reels are absolute workhorses. I use my 3000 for salt water in the summer for Wrasse and pollock and Pike in the winter.
The thing hasn’t given me a single problem ever, I’ve had it for 2 years and not a single birds nest or anything.
If you’re proper into fishing and want a good mid to high range reel I couldn’t recommend anything better honestly.

Did you tear the reel down and clean the inside it out and regrease? Even though it has sealed bearings, its not designed to be immersed in saltwater. The battle 3 is easy to take apart and reassemble. A youtuber named tackleadvisors tore one down in 2 min and 17 seconds.

All sizes have CnC gears. In the "regular" series, the main gear is CnC machined aluminum on the smaller ones, and the larger ones have brass. In the DX series, all models have brass CnC main gear, and all models of all series have brass CnC pinion gear.
