This comparison comes a couple of days later for me...But i've already watched your 890 adv, 890 R and Tuareg series videos . I almost purchase a 890 adv, but I was worried that the suspension was not adequate for me, my weight and short travel. Then I dislike the 890R looks. that high fender and seat is just ugly IMO. So after many videos watched and reading a lot, I decided for the Tuareg 660, which seems like a reliable bike, I love the looks ( I wanted an Africa Twin but decided againts big bikes) , good suspension and it has the conveniences I like: Tubeless, engine sound, cruise control, weight, etc. I like from KTM adv , that the design eliminates the need for high crash bars (weight and $) and the rear holding rack. I am having a difficult time finding a rear rack I like for my Tuareg
I just traded in my 23’ 890 base for a 23’ GS. The weight and handling of the 890 simply can’t be beat. I ride alone, and long distance. Right or wrong, I was always worried about the reliability . I never had a problem, but just couldn’t shake the concern. Great bike, I just didn’t trust it. I will say however, for your avg to medium rider- the base is plenty off road. More capable than the rider. Much better on road. I think it fits most riders better in fact.
I've had both 890R and a '17 1200GS and a '19 R1250GS. I think the BMW's are extremely reliable. You'll get an occasional fault message but rarely something that will end your trip or ruin your day. I sold the 1250 with 40,000 miles on it, with lots of off road time and it never missed a beat. But if you want to blaze througmh the tough stuff the 890 is hard to beat. Although my DesertX neck and neck with the 890R.
The 790/890 line of bikes are just incredible off road. I had the standard version, and was great on road as well. The 1250 will be used for longer travel and light off road. I really liked the 890 though, and was just fantastic size/ weight and handling. Plenty of power. Just a great all around package. I never had a problem other than the coolant leak- no big deal ( only about 3500 miles on the bike ) The real problem was in my head…. Couldn’t shake the reliability concern, which sapped the fun out too much. I hope KTM can outgrow this perception, bc their bikes are really good performers.
I currently own a 390 adventure, and I know it's assembled in India, but they should definitely make their QC process better. During the first 600 miles I've had a dead battery that had to be replaced, TFT flickering if you are driving and there aren't clouds covering the sun, quickshifter that works randomly and also goes into neutral on its own, which I've found to be a bit concerning when going downhill and using engine brake. There have been more issues, but those are the ones I can remember right now, and it's a bike with 600 miles / 1000 km. KTM should do better if they want someone to later upgrade to a KTM 890 Adventure, they might be build in Austria, but if there are products under your umbrella which are faulty, you should definitely step up your game. Additionally (and this will not be a problem for many people) in my country base models (890s) don't sell, last time I went to KTM to view one I had to order the bike before I could sit on it, and that is just insane. In the case of the R model, people aren't buying it either, today I saw the 2023 model was priced at around 17.8k USD, but last year it was around 24k USD (motorcycles are really expensive here due to taxes), but that is a really big discount, because simply people don't buy them. Sorry for the long text, but just wanted to vent a little bit, I'm sure there are people in countries where you can find good quality dealers who will fix every issue you have, but around here, if you break something it might take months to get a replacement, the technicians don't really know how to work on a bike with so many electronics (and this wouldn't be an issue, if things just worked). To summarize, I think KTM should work on their QC process on all of their motorcycles, someone who is buying a 250 or 390 today could be someone buying a 1290 in a couple years, but if they are disappointed with errors, they will surely look at other options. Greetings from South America
@@BigRockMoto i got a buyback, 390 adventure did not start well, not even after the first day. However, i have friends that love theirs and have not had any issues.
It seems people like to trash talk KTM and maybe sometime they deserve it. However I got 4 seasons and 30000 km on my 790R and one season and 12000 km on my 890 R. I love the bikes and would highly recommend them. For the price and performance it would be hard to find any other bike that would compare.
My son has a 2023 390 and zero problems. I had a 2018 1290 SAR with 5000 miles and zero problems. I currently have a 2023 Husky 701 with 2500 miles and haven't had any issues with it. I'm not saying other people haven't had problems but being the internet the way it is who knows whether all the complaints are true.
I completely agree with your sharing. I'm short, I do more road riding, not much off-road, so I bought the 790 S. I've had the KTM for three years and I still love it. Best regards from Portugal.
I was so close to getting a 2023 R but the reports of heat, wind buffeting and terrible reliability had me go for an older 2014 GS to run with my CRF450L.
Very nice comparison! From reading on-line forums I know there are pros and cons to these bikes. Nevertheless, I was edging close to buying a 890S, when for the 2024 model year KTM pulled the 890S from the US market and reintroduced the 790S, with non-adjustable front suspension. I decided to buy a Tuareg 660, and got a good deal on a new 2023 model. Your Tuareg series has been extremely helpful to me, thanks!
I couldn't be happier w/ my '23 base 890. I don't get to ride off road w/o an 1.5hr commute, I prefer the hwy comfort and will sacrifice a little offroad. I have had zero problems w/ mine, 4K miles....
After many problems on the KTM 790 AdvR I had (two workshops were not able to replace the broken clutch lever sensor) I have sold it. No more Pierer Mobility bikes anymore. To much troubles with that. Now I am on Honda.
As previous owner of 790 ADV R, think you nailed difference. R was very capable, liked it more watching Chris Birch thrash but BDR trails I was riding probably could have used base. Just went between the 2 & got a Norden 901 last week
Thanks Ian for your videos. I got the 23 S model. Im short and light and even lowered it 1 inch more with custom hyperpro. Love it on road and some not crazy offroad.
Very happy with my “S” model. First adv bike, first time riding off road in 20 years so I’ve been slow and practicing my skills. I do ride about 50/50 on road/off road. Love how it handles on the street coming from 13 years of sport bikes and an 890 Duke before it. It really does everything I need it too. I’ve only bottomed out the forks once and it was riding across a V shaped ditch, my buddies 1090R bottomed out too so I don’t fault the bike at all. I’m also pretty short at 5’-7” with a 30” inseam so the shorter seat height was a big selling point. Feeling confident in hairy situations I think is more important than extra ground clearance for the average rider. Maybe someday I’ll advance enough where I notice the suspension but I think aftermarket upgrades will be enough for me at that point. Anything more serious off-road and I’ll buy an actual enduro, no reason to suffer with the wrong tool just because it can kind of do it, I’ll never be a good enough off-road rider to feel confident enough for that sort of thing on something this heavy.
My base model has 1300 miles and has already been to the dealer three times for warranty work. I had the random turn signal failures, cruise control stopped working, brake and head lights stopped working and now the head gasket is probably gone as it is leaking coolant through a weep hole in the block. I won’t be keeping it without any warranty
Funny as you mentioned Reliability issues. My buddy just told me that his neighbour had a camshaft failure on his KTM he bought last year. And his buddy's KTM apparently also has some issues.......so yeah KTM and reliability IS a thing for sure.
There's a 50+ page post on advrider about camshaft issues. The Dukes also have issues. No known fix other than just replacing the cams and everything each time. I'm sure there are plenty of good ones out there, but I'm yet to see a photo of a perfect cam shaft on the 790 and 890. It will be interesting to see when Ian gets his checked.
Thanks for the comparison. If you don't already have one out, we'd like a comparison with you behind your laptop comparing the specs of KTM790adv, Transalp 750, V-Strom 800, and Tuareg and Tenere 700. Perhaps you could add a Chinese bike with similar specs just for color.
Thank you once again for a very comprehensive, easily absorbed run down on these bikes. Your previous videos covering the new kTM390 intrigued me and after checking them out at Mt. Baker Motor sports, in Bellingham, I bought one. That bike us probably the most fun bike I have ever owned. I spent 20 years on Road Kings while also having various pre- 2008 KLR650s and pre-1989 DR350SEs. 8 years ago I bought an R1200GS Rallye and marveled about the technology, highway ride and performance. I still own the R1200, but after watching your video, am putting on my gear and headed back to MBPS to check out the KTM890. I have complete trust in your appraisals of bikes and gear. I want to thank you, quite sincerely, for your commitment to adventure riding community. Big Rock Moto us always the first source I check when searching for this type of information.
In Europe, it’s hard to do a trip where you do more than 50% off road so I bought the standard bike. It did bottom out though off road so I’ve put 220mm closed cartridges in the forks and a 220mm piggyback shock from Tractive in the rear with hydraulic bump stop. I still have the higher screen, comfier lower seat but the suspension is a great compromise for genuine 50/50 riding.
Thanks for the video. I was faced with this question last spring and decided on the standard model because the R was taller than I was comfortable riding as well as almost all of my riding is on the road. The reason I wanted an adventure style bike is if the pavement ends, I would have a bike that could do an adequate job on gravel and dirt roads. I ride with a friend that has BMW RT and he kinda freaks when we unexpectedly come upon a dirt or gravel section of road.
Really? Bought mine in Valencia, I'm sure it was only 2 years. If it is three years, I'd better get my valve clearances and cams checked soon then before the 3 years is up.
I've personally come full circle from "mid-size" ADV bikes. Having owned a KTM 890R, I felt the bike was not the best for touring and not the best for off road. In fact, it was annoying on the highway and at speed due to buffeting, and off-road is was a handful. I found myself always worrying about not dropping it because it was such a pain to lift - especially since I would invariably drop the darned thing in sand on a steep narrow downslope. By the time I lifted it out I would be praying that I wouldn't drop it again. I have since realized there is (currently) no such thing as a unicorn bike, and there probably never will be. For me the mid-size ADV bike is a bike of compromises across the whole riding spectrum i.e on-road and off-road. To that end I got a KTM 1290 S that I use for touring and gravel roads. It has amazing wind protection, awesome power, and is remarkably nimble. Frankly, aside from the price, I don't understand why anyone would get a 890S over a 1290S (assuming you're getting a KTM). I also have a CRF300 Rally (with upgraded suspension). It is a ton of fun off-road (for my skill level). I can easily pick it up after multiple drops, and I have no problem riding it on the highway for several hours if need be. Bottom line: If I want to go touring with some light off-road it's the 1290. If I want to ride dirt with some touring it's the 300. Again all very personal and I am blessed to have the luxury of two bikes. Then again, f I were Chris Birch the I would probably just have a 1290R and rip up everything with a big grin on my face. Not happening in my case lol!
Hello Ian. Could you make a review of the new 790 Adventure? Or 790s vs 890 s. Here in Holland is the 790 €4000 less expensive en seems a good deal. Only 9 pks less and non adjustable springs. Kind Regards Eric from Holland
Ian, I would love to see you do a review of the Husky Norden 901Expedition model. I've watched hours upon hours of your content over the years and I have watched you back and forth between the 890 Adventure and 890 Adventure R for all the reasons you have explained in this video. One is more of the off-road camp and the other is for the milder Adv touring folks. Comfort vs capability seems to always be the discriminating factor. Well, as I'm sure you already know, Husky attempted to resolve that dilemma with the 901 Expedition. With the 2 piece seat and touring windscreen, as well as the WP Xplor suspension and a heavy duty bash plate....I really think this would be a worth while review. Keep up the good work!
Another great video Ian! When KTM announced the 2023 890 I'd already decided to let go of my 2019 1290 Super Adventure S. Primarily because of mileage, but also because I wanted to be able to tackle some more demanding high mountain gravel & dirt roads in the Alps (live in Scandinavia). So downsizing was the sensible route. While staying in orange. Did >55.000 kilometers with the 1290, almost fault free (just one minor niggle). So I'd not lost my confidence in KTM. But the getting there is, especially for (some) Scandinavians, a big part of the whole adventure. Having something street/road biased makes sense. That, and a friend's remark on the stiffness of the 2023 890R had me chose the base model. Never rode the R, but one can tell the stiffness just from sitting on it. Anyhow, 2023 season with the 890 base model (why can't they call it S for simplicity) ended around 19000 kilometers or ca 12000 miles. Just had some minor issues, else the motorcycle has been brilliant. And made me a better rider. To help people I've blogged about the whole experience, and will continue to do so. IF I decide to keep it. Which is where I'm at. Prior to choosing the 890S (see above :) I'd tested the 2023 Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro. I really liked it, but there were some things I didn't li. However, the 2024 model carries several improvements. So the question now is, one more season with the 890S, or the 2024 Tiger 900 Rally Pro. The Tiger is a far better long distance traveller, I've no doubt about that. But even with improvements I suspect the 890S is a better motorcycle offroad. And way more fun. Never owned a Triumph. Maybe it's time to try British. Or maybe stay Orange. One definitely could have worse challenges in life, cheers :)
Great video Ian! I think I would go with the base model because I dont have much experience off road but I dont really go fast off road because Im taking it all in. Now, I’ll set the asphalt on fire with stree riding so it seems like the base model has a great suspension for the street and a pretty good suspension for slow rides off road. I have sat on the R model and I liked it but I think if I were to buy one the base model would suit me best. The height doesnt really matter to me too much because Im 6’2” but the lower hight of the base appeals to me as well. Anyways, keep up the great work! God bless!
Another great video Ian. I have a '23 KTM 890 Adventure S and really like it. Having said that, I'm not an off-road rider, but simply prefer adventure bikes for a variety of reasons. In addition, both the KTM R and Rally 890 models are much too tall for me. Which Mosko top tail bag is pictured in this video, along with it's capacity in liters? Thanks and keep up the great work!
I had my 890 Adventure (non-R) down some dirt roads last week. Doing around 90km/h and hit some puddle holes - no issues I can say. No bottoming out. I eventually ended up on a washed out road, and it handled the washout with small baby heads no problem either - didn't remember to pop it off of street mode either. I am by no means an aggressive or expert off-road rider though - and love the 890 because I too and old, short and fat. I did sit on the 890R and definitely noticed the seat height difference you spoke of (even though it is only an inch and a half)
Transalp for me im mild offroad at best, mostly on road off road touring is my bliss, but if i wanted an offroad for anything more than that or a dedicated offroad, I'd get a drz400 most likely . Thanks for all the things ive learned from watching you 😊 and the great vids
Is the Norden different enough from the standard 890 to be considered in this? Beside looks, there seems to be a slight height difference when comparing the 901 and 890 base. This due to a different suspension or just seat design?
I considered and tried the Norden 901. To me, it felt much larger! The seat width is wider which meant that at 5' 8" 30" inseam, it was difficult to reach the ground even with 1 foot especially in MX boots. The bike to me felt heavier. It would be okay for highway use with some trails. I wanted an ADV bike that I could RIDE to destination, then go offroad well! Being shorter l, I wanted the R. It Is too tall even for 1 foot down especially for gnarled sections where a guy would realistically need to paddle. The base model model allows me to put the seat in the high position for a better rider triangle for travel, then lower it for offroad riding giving me the added reach to the ground. I do not just ride gravel roads or lanes. I will do single track and rough baby heads etc. The base does very well! It is easier to life than my honda 300L, no joke! I took the bike on the COBDR last August, and I enjoyed the entire trip 100% Taking it on WYBDR and SDBDRX this year!. The rear shock does bottom out riding a fast clip over whoops with some air but it is not bad. 190 pound rider with gear
I get the R model, if one needs the highest performing off road bike in the class, get an R. As a consumer I don’t get the S model, from reviews, it doesn’t seem any better off road or on road than the new Transalp. With the transalp you don’t have to deal with ktm’s QC and reliability issues. The Vstrom 800 DE seems on par (or better), than the S model as well.
Agreed about the QC issues, but the 890 base is one of the most fun and best handling streetbikes I've ever tested... runs circles around a TA or Vstrom
The S model is still better off road because of its low center of gravity - Transalp, 800DE, T7 don't even come close. For a shorter rider, 890 S is the perfect bike, especially if you opt for the KTM low one piece seat! I rode it all over Colorado, including the Hagerman Pass and it did awesome!
Thank you , like always very good info. I just order the 790 Adv standard ( in January Canada) . I want to order 890 adv Standard but for 2024 , no more available in Canada. I don't know for USA market but for Canadian market... only 890 Adv R and 790 adv. Standard are available. I ride more on dirt road , but not like single Trac.... more fire road. And I m sure for my this one gonna be very more fun thand my previous one r1200gs 2019 ....
I went with the base model. I am 5.6 tall and 150 pounds. For fast off-road riding in not so technical terrains, the suspension is great even on the softer configuration. Once you hit more technical o highly uneven roads, the suspension will bottom. It is a trade off I am happy with.
Hi Ian thanks for taking time to make these videos a huge help, dad and I are both looking for new bikes to ride to Norway, Nordkapp and Iceland 🇮🇸 been looking at alot of the Japanese stuff but nothings caught our eye had alot in the past. The 790/890/901 platform is really interesting both previously had 390s which we had issues with on the displays and stalling on one bike an pdi issues left a lasting impression though even though we got refund hence looking at the twins now, its a shame they hadnt got the new screen on the 390s yet. If you dont mind me asking whats your take between the 890 base and the norden 901 base now youve had both inc wind buffeting. Im 6'2 and 32" inseam an i was suprised when i sat on the expedition how much of a nightmare it was far to tall, the 890r i could get one foot flat or tip toes on both, then sat on the stock norden which felt sorta close to the 890r an the 890standard seat height was really good especially for my dad. We also looked at the new chinese built 790 over here looked decent an i liked the colour noticed quite a few grand off new ones over here stuck an insurance quote in hardly anyone was covering it, plenty on the 890 though an was about £500 or so difference in favour of the 890 even though it was more expense with more companies to choose from worth checking out for any uk readers before you buy one. At the moment id say im leaning towards the 890s, normal norden 901 or a older 890/790 from 2021 on
Greatly Appreciate your videos, always well a balanced, reasonable AND honest presentation! I'm seriously looking at the 2024 KTM 790adv or 890 Adv or 890Adv R. The main issue holding me back so far is the reliability issues I have read about since the introduction of the 790 a few years ago...now with the these '24 models I'm looking for rider reviews and user issues if any and so far have only found a couple of the Bike mag intros to the new model, which of course won't display any issues as the test models are all too new still.... Main reason for looking at these models aside from features is over all weight, which according to the spec sheets from KTM that I have seen to date are both within about 10-15lbs of each other, for the 790 vs 890! This is amazing if true, if it is? Why not go to the 890 or R version?...assuming no issues of reliability....well that's my thinking at least Hope you have a chance to review these new '24 series and point us in the direction of honest review decisions again. Cheers
I pit the 890r fender on my 22 890s. The stock 890s fender does not work well in sand. It allows the front tire to throw a lot of sand up in front of the bike then it rains down all over me and gets past my helmet vents and in my eyes and the seat always had a pile of sand in it. The high fender stopped it completely. Also the 390 adv screen with a deflector works good for the wind buffeting.
Amazing video. However, I think the external tube of the forks is the same. Both S and R model have the same part code for the triple clamp. The bottom part of the tube have different diameter. If you want to swap forks you just need to change the brake lines.
They are and it is the replacement for the 890s in US. I put a deposit on one here in NY a month ago. Dealer had no arrival date, should be March, not sure
Are you sure the triples are different? I just recently put an 790R suspension on my 890S. OEM triple part numbers were the same accross the models alloweing for a direct swap of the forks. Only think i had to replace was the brake lines for the longer travel
If you have a goal to ride all of the BDRs what is the best tool for the job? Assume there is 1500 to 2000 mile highway "commute" each way to get to and from your home to the route.
Love my base 2023 890 Adventure. It does everything I need it to do as someone who weights in at 145lbs the stock suspension works. Here in Canada it doesn't look like we are getting a 2024 base 890 adventure. They have dropped that down to the new 790 adventure leaving the 890 adventure R on its own. I get why they would do this now there is a real difference between the bikes.
I have a 690 enduro r. I don’t get off-road as much as I’d like so it’s used mostly for commuting and quick trips to the shops. The 890 adventure would most likely be fine for the majority of my riding but I’m sure I’d buy the R model instead. Even if my off-road adventures are seldom having the extra travel and clearance would be worth it.
Good summary Ian, thank you! Are you able to ride a Norden 901 Expedition? Id be interested to hear your opinion on that bike after riding the KTM’s and the base Norden model, Cheers 👍
Hi, i think the triple clamps are the same, i've seen people swaping the suspension to the Xplor and also see a French guy with a the new 790 with xplor Pro, without changing the triple clamps, the regular Norden also have the same triple clamp and Lyndon Poskitt change to the Xplor Pro. The brake lines at least have a different color, i don't know if they are bigger.
I love my 2023 890 S. It does everything I need it to do. Suspension soft for the bigger stuff but I prefer to hit the bigger stuff with my KTM 350excf.
Ian, I have to make a choice Ktm 890 r Aprilia tuarag Husky 701 enduro Coming from a drz400. I am vertically challenged and lowe the seat height better. I do several day long motocamping trips with gear. The drz is bad on the highway. We do some pretty challenging scar adventure routes with deep sand and mud. What bike would you recommend.
At 6, 4" with 36" inseam I went with a 23 890r and a tall seat with lower pegs. It feels like a big dirtbike and sucks up the biggest potholes. Only problem I have had was a coolant leak and my left leg gets alot of heat from the radiator. The r suspension is grat for jumps at the offroad parks. I try not to think about how much it cost when I hit a table top jump with it.😂
I'm short only 5 foot 5 but my local KTM dealership has the 2023 R model at a discount below the base so though it might be less convenient for my size I feel like I cannot pass up the opportunity for a good deal like this. Not to say I'm inexperienced with tall bikes as I've had a crf rally and an Africa twin But this will definitely be the tallest. Reliability is also a concern. Right now I'm in between this and a tuareg 660.
Thanks for the video. Very helpful for me right now. I am 187cm tall and weigh 107kg, however I would use the motorcycle more for asphalt than for off-road. I have been told that the Basics version would be too short for me. ¿What could you recommend?
Thanks for the comparison video Ian. I got an offer I couldn't refuse from a friend who mostly does single track. Off-roading for a month every year so I picked up his 790 adventure. R and he bought a brand new 690 EnduroR. I've got the stock S seat and I'm having the suspension lowered 1.25 in with the TouraTech lowering kit. I'm going to check the stock lean angle on the kickstand before it's lowered. I'm hearing about 15% is appropriate? Has anybody done this and know how far that stand needs to be shortened? I'm hearing about a half an inch... Thanks again, Ian and Big Rock Moto!
Did they fix the cold start issue? The one where it struggles on one cylinder for a bit before dying like half the time. My 2022 does this and the dealer just said it was normal for this engine
@BigRockMoto I've been debating on the husky 701 or tuarag or 890 adventure. After owning an aprilia tuono for 4 years they are probably the most unreliable motorcycle manufacturer I have ever owned. And dealer support for me js 4 hours each way and not good. I'm really nervous about both. Coming from a drz400 that has been bulletproof!!
excellent video; your channel is amazing; just a small detail, both models have the same triple clamp diameter, reason, external diameter of both forks is the same. Thx a lot Ian for your channel
Would really like to see these tall adventure. Bikes have adjustable seats for lower seat options from the manufacturer. I'm 6 1. I'm challenged when I ride these tall bikes.
The standard model is not only lower, but also stands more on its nose, which also makes it handle much better on the road, with a bit more front end bias. Drop/raise the forks and you get a different motorcycle. I myself bit the bullit and bought a standard model with a nice discount and then invested in Tractive suspension, 15mm raised (you can simply order it like that). Going for the perfect real 50-50 adventure travel bike, here in Europe you can’t avoid tarmac. Waiting for the ice to melt and I can test it!
I have an 2019 Adv R and have ridden through the Balkans. I would say, this was medium offroad - some big rocks but I am not that fast, like the youngsters with 450 Hard Enduros. But it is quite tall for me. So I think about getting the Base-Model of the new 890. It is a tough decision as a I cannot try it in real offroad riding.
great comparison...usually most people start out going to ride more off-road than they really do...both are great bikes, but where I live and my age, if I ever went to KTM it would be the base.
Thanks for the video, I Would really enjoy hearing your thoughts on the 2024 KTM 790 adv. Is it better than ‘23 890S? What options and price points could be done to make 790 adv suspension close to 890 adv r? (Say good/better/best) What changes were done to Airbox? With a 2 year vs one year warranty and much lower price point, 790 seems ‘too good to be true’!
I was at my dealer yesterday and thought about it - he saved a Trophy for me....but I'm passing and wait until the GSA comes....I'll let you handle this...hahah!!! - Can't wait!!!! @@BigRockMoto
Even if you plan to ride mostly off road a lower seat height may be a better choice if you don’t plan to ride super aggressively. I decided against the Adventure R model because it put me on my tip toes. I am happy with my Aprilia Tuareg 660 which I can almost flat foot. I would probably also be content with the KTM 890 Base Model height.
I have the 890R, and would say that the suspension is far too hard for most people. The hard suspension causes the front wheel to deflect rather than soak up the bumps. Measuring the sag proves this. Ian, please would you be kind enough to measure the sag on each bike. I bet the R's sag is way off KTM's spec (80mm with an 85kg rider).
I have the R model and lowered it close to the S model ride height to cater my short 29 innch inseam. It was a comprise i was willing to take by having the explore suspension.
How did you go about lowering it? Also have a short inseam, the only reason other than not "needing" the R suspension that pushes me towards the base model
I have watched some of your videos about gear. My question is what do you recommend for hot humid climates like Southern Georgia? I would greatly appreciate a response!
Great review Ian. I have a deposit on a Transalp but am starting to think about a base 890. Reliabilty is my biggest concern with the KTM. Since you have ridden both what are your thoughts on the two? Some of your comments about the KTM suspension seem to mirror your comments of the Transalps, so are they aout the same? Thanks
The 890 performs better, firmer suspension, better handling, feels lighter, faster, etc. But, the honda is definitely built better and is more comfortable. tough choice. also huge price difference.
They don't sell the 890 base in the US anymore. They do sell the new 790, which is made in China, and I'll be interested to see if it is more reliable. There are hardware/software issues with these bikes, but I also suspect the KTM just isn't very good at mass production. There are also the CFMoto versions - not yet in the US - and I'm curious about their build quality relative to KTM. They don't have the same leeway KTM seems to be granted, so it should be interesting. ( The street 790 is for sale in the US.)
Which one would you buy? Or, would you buy a different bike or brand entirely? Chime in below.

@@Rod990ktm I am running the SW Motech rear rack on my Tuareg and am very happy with it.
I traded my Pan America for the 890 base model. What a difference. Love this bike!
How hot does this 890 engine run in this state of tune in the adventure? I live in a country with warmer climate and this is a big concern.
@BigRockMoto Waiting for you to do a comparison between the 890R and the Norden 901 Expedition.
I could not be happier with the 2023 base model. As I am getting older I ride mild dirt so it is perfect for me. Thanks the the video.
Same for me and lower seat height
I just traded in my 23’ 890 base for a 23’ GS. The weight and handling of the 890 simply can’t be beat. I ride alone, and long distance. Right or wrong, I was always worried about the reliability . I never had a problem, but just couldn’t shake the concern. Great bike, I just didn’t trust it. I will say however, for your avg to medium rider- the base is plenty off road. More capable than the rider. Much better on road. I think it fits most riders better in fact.
Exactly, I'd rather a older BMW then any new KTM...
I don’t think KTM are unreliable at all I have a adv setup 500 excf pushing 25,000km and had zero issues…

Thank you for sharing. Great info.
@@BigRockMoto i got a buyback, 390 adventure did not start well, not even after the first day. However, i have friends that love theirs and have not had any issues.
Welcome to KTM ownership lol
Heat is awesome when riding in colder weather
Very nice comparison! From reading on-line forums I know there are pros and cons to these bikes. Nevertheless, I was edging close to buying a 890S, when for the 2024 model year KTM pulled the 890S from the US market and reintroduced the 790S, with non-adjustable front suspension. I decided to buy a Tuareg 660, and got a good deal on a new 2023 model. Your Tuareg series has been extremely helpful to me, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
I couldn't be happier w/ my '23 base 890. I don't get to ride off road w/o an 1.5hr commute, I prefer the hwy comfort and will sacrifice a little offroad. I have had zero problems w/ mine, 4K miles....
awesome
After many problems on the KTM 790 AdvR I had (two workshops were not able to replace the broken clutch lever sensor) I have sold it. No more Pierer Mobility bikes anymore. To much troubles with that. Now I am on Honda.
i hear you.
Just wish Honda come with 2nd iteration of the Transalp.
What? Clutch lever sensor is a basic microswitch. It is also very easy to access (maybe too easy) on this bike. How they failed such a simple thing 🤦
@@hyozd ktm dealerships have no idea what they are doing.
Awesome comparison Ian. Keep up the great work 👊
Glad you enjoyed it
Very happy with my “S” model.
Great video! Looking forward to you reviewing the new 2024 KTM 790
My 2022 ktm 890 adv s radiator blew up. Luckily i was able to get a v strom for it.
Did exactly the same thing, also in Europe, same reason.
Good video! In Spain both models come with 3 year warranty (don't know the rest of the EU)
Good to know!
Really? Bought mine in Valencia, I'm sure it was only 2 years. If it is three years, I'd better get my valve clearances and cams checked soon then before the 3 years is up.
@@defylifeadventure Yes! I’ve just bought my 890 adv R in Barcelona with 3 year warranty. Also, I asked other dealers and it was the same here.
I am coming to the same conclusion
@Mightypowner what are your thoughts on the new 2025 KTM 390 Adventure R?
I’ve nearly bottomed out the 890R… added in like 10 clicks of compression. Very happy with the suspension.
This due to a different suspension or just seat design?
seat design, Norden seat is extremely wide and makes a huge difference for getting feet down.
What about KTM quality and dependability?
I’m thinking Husqvarna Norden 901 is in between those two. How you compare it?
I took the bike on the COBDR last August, and I enjoyed the entire trip 100%
Taking it on WYBDR and SDBDRX this year!.
Fair enough 👍@@BigRockMoto
cruise control? Rally Pack?
To me, the 890s $4000 extra list price, plus the additional tech pack at $550 or so (lol) isn't worth it.
To each their own.
Why not go to the 890 or R version?...assuming no issues of reliability....well that's my thinking at least
Hope you have a chance to review these new '24 series and point us in the direction of honest review decisions again.
The 790 (being produced by CFMOTO now) has made it back to European markets. Have you heard if there are plans to bring it to the US?
They are and it is the replacement for the 890s in US. I put a deposit on one here in NY a month ago. Dealer had no arrival date, should be March, not sure
Always fantastic reviews. Thanks again Ian for being straight forward and succinct. Keep em coming!!
You explain the obvious pretty well. And I would like to see more of a Ride demo on the R model.
Good summary Ian, thank you! Are you able to ride a Norden 901 Expedition? Id be interested to hear your opinion on that bike after riding the KTM’s and the base Norden model, Cheers 👍
Compare 790S vs Translap?
Hi, i think the triple clamps are the same, i've seen people swaping the suspension to the Xplor and also see a French guy with a the new 790 with xplor Pro, without changing the triple clamps, the regular Norden also have the same triple clamp and Lyndon Poskitt change to the Xplor Pro.
The brake lines at least have a different color, i don't know if they are bigger.
Puig windshield and the 890 R is the one bike bike. It’s fantastic on the road and goes anywhere else I want to.
I love my 2023 890 S. It does everything I need it to do. Suspension soft for the bigger stuff but I prefer to hit the bigger stuff with my KTM 350excf.
Would be great to get your opinion about the Husqvarna Norden 901 vs 890 Adventure.
Ian, I have to make a choice
Ktm 890 r
Aprilia tuarag
Husky 701 enduro
Coming from a drz400.
Hello, good review as always. Is it possible to review The Voge range of bikes?
Ian, I’m ordering a pair of MSR Voyager pants, should I order the exact size in which my waist measures, or a size larger? Thanks.
What about getting the base model but just upgrading the spring rates for your weight? Would that work?
Did they fix the cold start issue? The one where it struggles on one cylinder for a bit before dying like half the time. My 2022 does this and the dealer just said it was normal for this engine
I've always been a fan of the "Base" model. Other bikes I am considering are the Tuareg 660 and Norden 901 (to replace my 2016 R1200GSA).
Ive got a 20 790 S that I upgraded to TracTive Xtreme setup, fully adj front and rear, its a short R version now, what a differance
nice!
How would you compare the aprilia tuareg with the 890 base model?
Tuareg is way better off road and I prefer it overall.
Yes, you are right
I bottomed the front forks twice in first gear on base model, I love the height I'll change the seals when they go that's all.
I can't wait for the new ktm790 review...
The side mirrors on the base model are fugly. But I’d still get the base. Not a big off roader. Great review
Would really like to see these tall adventure. Bikes have adjustable seats for lower seat options from the manufacturer. I'm 6 1. I'm challenged when I ride these tall bikes.
Yoy really smacked this one! Great comparison, thanks.
I got the R for the suspension.
Sounds great
I have an 2019 Adv R and have ridden through the Balkans. I would say, this was medium offroad - some big rocks but I am not that fast, like the youngsters with 450 Hard Enduros. But it is quite tall for me. So I think about getting the Base-Model of the new 890. It is a tough decision as a I cannot try it in real offroad riding.
Hi Ian!, quick question, im thinking 890s vs transalp. now that you have tested both, what are your thoughts
KTM way more fun and fast, Honda way more comfortable and reliable.
@@BigRockMotoyou're not really helping us decide 😂
@@srdjanmaksimovic1779 it requires self knowledge..;)
So is the S model windscreen way better than the R. Or is there something better out there
Which one do you like the most Norden 901 or Ktm 890 adv s ?
great comparison...usually most people start out going to ride more off-road than they really do...both are great bikes, but where I live and my age, if I ever went to KTM it would be the base.
I'm interested in a Husqvarna Norden 901 Expedition for the bennies of a 890 Adv R but with better road comfort.
I think the base 890 would be a great bike for me but the issues with them are pushing me to the Africa Twin.
same
I have ridden KTM 890 ADV comming from 90s bikes... wow, just wow...
Thanks for the video, I Would really enjoy hearing your thoughts on the
2024 KTM 790 adv.
Is it better than ‘23 890S?
What options and price points could be done to make 790 adv suspension close to 890 adv r? (Say good/better/best)
What changes were done to Airbox?
With a 2 year vs one year warranty and much lower price point, 790 seems ‘too good to be true’!
Its the 890 adventure vs the 790 adventure for me. Assembled in China vs Austria too but theres no competing data
Nice Job comparing the two...I'm kinda regretting selling my 890R now..hahah!!!...keep them coming...
R1300GS's about to hit dealers... life is short... :)
I was at my dealer yesterday and thought about it - he saved a Trophy for me....but I'm passing and wait until the GSA comes....I'll let you handle this...hahah!!! - Can't wait!!!!

Great information Ian, thank you!
@@emersonbowling833 HyperPro lowering kit
Every time I click on your channel it’s like you’ve read my mind. Great video as usual Ian.
I have watched some of your videos about gear. My question is what do you recommend for hot humid climates like Southern Georgia? I would greatly appreciate a response!
Klim baja s4
@@BigRockMoto Thank you for the reply. Do you have any cheaper options?
@@RevansNightmare yes, sedici marco 2 mesh at revzilla.
@@BigRockMoto I ordered the Baja S4. Thank you for all the advice.
i would like to see an updated review for the 390-sw
Diggin the shades.
Great comparison.
Thanks Ian. @@BigRockMoto
Very happy with my Tiger 900 RP just does everything well
They don't sell the 890 base in the US anymore.
Looking at the KTM website, I believe they stopped selling the 890 base and now only sell the 790.
I got a 2 year factory warranty on my '23 890 R.
Thanks for the honest review. Rare quality.
Ktms in general feel like bicycles. Very light to control. S model for me! Thanks!
