See, most people would think that Jaguar reliability is lower than Mercedes reliability, but actually the story of these two luxury car brands is very different today.

Love this review! IMO, modern Jags will out last a modern Benz. It was the complete opposite decades ago... However, here & now Benz does not care too much about reliability as it seems Jag has tried to turn itself around thanks to Ford who helped them a great deal. The problem with Jag, it has suffered a long time from a bad reputation due to being unreliable. Jag has actually improved a great deal in that department... It's just hard to get away from that stigma unfortunately. And I'd NEVER take my Jag to a dealership unless it was for a recall. I have a mechanic who takes care of my car needs & he is a LIFE SAVER!

I’m from Europe where you can find Mercedes on every corner , I owned many different Mercedes models over the years , never had any problems with any of them … if you take care of Mercedes, service it , and fix things when they need fixing , it’ll run forever , there are Mercedes for sale with 300 000 - 400 000 miles all over , and they’re not cheap either … I just bought 2015 S550 with 80K miles for $29.000 , I checked internet for sale ads in Europe, and that same car would cost around €70.000 over there , we are very fortunate that those cars depreciate unbelievably like that , here in US , so we can actually afford to buy them … every time I sit in my S550 is an experience, that car brings me a lots of joy and satisfaction, and I’ll gladly pay more to maintain it, rather than driving a boring car every day , that I don’t care for … just me , your mileage may vary…
I own a Jag S-Type, 2000 Model, with a 3.0 Litre straight six engine, 157k kilometer. Runs perfect, beautiful car, no gremlins,.no problems, I do maintain it and treat it like a princess, but it has been a very reliable daily car. I would never trade it for a Mercedes or a BMW from that era. It is not always car's fault, very often are the problems actually owner's fault.

Hi from Canada, yes thanks for your comment and I agree, often it is the owners doing or undoing that causes a cars issues. I do believe that recent Jags have truly evolved to a place of solid mainstream reliability. No worse, no better but the reputation hangs on. Let’s also not forget what junk Ho fa and Toyota used to be, tin boxes, weak RS fines that burned oil at lower milrs and rusted out early I. It’s life. Now Toyota and Honda are solid but they shook off the rep, would be great if Jag could focus on marketing things to evolve.
And I live in The States where Jaguars still have always the same shady reputation. But I noticed how they'd come a long way by 2000/2001. And I became a real fan of the S-Type by that time as well as a fan of the other Jags then. And after 20+ years since, I've felt impressed reading comments in other TH-cam vids from owners who kept their Jags of those years and kept them, including the supercharged versions, and got rid of their BMWs, Audis, and/or Mercedes Benzes of the same years because those spent more time in the shops. And going back to 2000, when I became more of a Jag man, it's like I almost knew that it was going to happen. And I could take a base 2000/02 S-Type over a Mercedes E320 or base BMW 3 series and have no regrets even with the 3.0 Litre S- Type being slower than both of them in acceleration.
Your S Type has a V6 engine. The last straight 6 came out in 1997 in the X300 XJs and it was the AJ16.
A realistic overview indeed, u know mark, noticing that you start all you vids riding a Jag , one might think partial to the British brand, yet you keep thing fair and even enough, I like that ,didn't disappoint as always,all the best👍
As an owner of a jag xe s and a mercedez e350 this vid was right up my alley.
Jaguars have always been given an exaggerated 'thumbs down' by the motoring press. There are many owners of more modern Jags who have experienced next to no reliability problems or at a level at least on a par with BMW or Mercedes Benz. Everyone jumps unfairly on the bandwagon. Conversely, German cars get all the hype, when in fact in a lot of cases they are no more reliable than their competition. Would have that Jag over the Merc every time.

Loloooloo there’s a reason you see Mercedes on every corner block but you can go a week without seeing a Jaguar… they are horrific junk.

I bought a 2016 Jaguar XF Prestige in Hawaii in July of 2019. I loved it at the beginning. The first problem I had was the rims were 19" and scared up so I did lots of research and found the rim and tires I wanted. There were 18" and the tires I wanted came in the correct size. I bought the rims and made my appointment at Jaguar of Honolulu. When I took the car in they told me that they can not swap out the rims because I did not buy them from their dealership (The ONLY Jaguar dealership in Hawaii). I explained that I spent $2,000 US dollars on the rims and basically begged them, but they were firm and did not do the work. I took my Jag to GoodYear in Pearl City and begged them to switch the TPS sensors from the old rims to the new rims and do a wheel alignment. They agreed to switch the TPS sensors but told me they can not do work on Jaguars (At all not even oil changes). In fact, I quickly learned that no shops of any kind will do any work on a Jaguar (Fast Lube, Jiffy Lube, No one will do oil changes). Jaguar of Honolulu charges about $900.00 to service the car and do an oil change (information I found out after I was already STUCK with the car). I scheduled another appt with Jaguar to do the wheel alignment and fix the doors which were suddenly not locking anymore. At the appt I was told that the reason my doors stopped locking was the door actuators went bad. They replaced them on (2) doors and I paid the $2,000 bill making my Jaguar start to leave a dent in my wallet. This brings my investment to over $4,000 dollars plus the (4) new tires and I just bought the car! I should also say that I bought the car with 25,000 miles just for complete understanding. Door locks should not be breaking at 25k miles. That is insane!!!! Ok, so after paying the bill I walk out to my car and there is a huge 5 inch long area of scratches and missing paint at the bottom of one of the doors they fixed. I got so mad it was difficult to contain my rage after the bill I just paid. They did NOT discount the work after admitting they damaged my car. They could not even fix it that day because they had to schedule with an outside vendor for paint repairs. So I had to bring it back in a few weeks. In the meantime every time it rained my doors they started filling up with water or when I washed the car too.!!! At the next appt they (sort of fixed the paint damage). I could tell where they damaged it and they cleaned out the doors so they stopped filling up with water. This bill was no charge (Thank God!!). That was all in the 1st year of ownership. Now fast forward to now in Nov 2023. My Jag started leaking coolant. I made an appointment to Jaguar of Honolulu and the quote for the repair was $7,000 US dollars. I am not even finished making payments on the car and I have only driven the car 28,000 miles since I bought it!!! The Odometer is at 53,000 miles!!!! Explain to me how it has a 7,000 dollar coolant at 53K miles??? I own a 2006 Toyota Tacoma (I am the only owner) with 160,000 miles and only paid for breaks, oil changes, and a couple of battery replacements. How on Earth is Jaguar built so BAD????? I called Subaru and told them my 2016 Jag was in perfect condition and asked them how much they would give me to trade it in and you know what they said? Sorry, we won't take Jaguar for trade-ins. You have to sell it on your own. Are you freaking kidding me here!!!!!! I hate Jaguar and I will never ever have anything good to say about them ever again. I have to find a way to get out of this nightmare car!!!!! Any thoughts???

Ford took possession of Jaguar in 1989. Jaguar NEVER had engine issues. They were hampered by electrical issues and the labor unions in Britain in the 1970s and early `80s. My 1988 XJ6, which I kept 12 years was quite reliable. It was powered by a Jaguar designed and built inline six engine that Jaguar started building in the early 1950s. It made numerous interstate trips of 500 plus miles without an issue. I still own a `95 XJ12 that never fails to start. It is powered by a V12 that is essentially 2 inline sixes and the transmission is a G.M. built Turbo (Hydramatic) 400'. I've also owned a 6.0 XJS and a `67 E type. My 2007 XJ8 and my 2009 XKR have both been trouble free. I have never owned a Jaguar V6 such as the 3 litre in the S series cars. The V8 engines used in Jaguars starting from 1997 (US) were designed by Jaguar, not Ford. Ford saved Jaguar and did certainly improve reliability. Mercedes started having issues when the wall fell. BTW, I spent 30+ years in the auto industry. I will not purchase a post 2009 Jaguar because a Jaguar should never have a 4 cylinder engine or a gear selector that looks and operates like a washing machine knob.

I have a 2003 Mercedes E500 non 4 matic the car still looks great I have 213000 miles on it it’s very reliable but it cost me alot over the 10 years of ownership
Indeed, operating costs is substantial but they have the potential to go a long ways
I bought my 2015 F-Type from CarMax three years ago. I purchased a 100,000 5-year CarMax warranty. Yesterday my car needed a new water pump and other things. The cost came to over $800, but I only had to pay my $50 CarMax deductible. Sweet.
Ok strangely enough I always thought Rovers and jags were unreliable. That said I drove an 2010 XKR Cabriolet to 2019 and it only gave me a hassle once with the water pump...annoying things like the adaptive headlights aside it was a decent daily driver.
I have a 2013 Mercedes c350 4matic and a 2016 Ftype V6S-AWD. No problems with either but the scheduled maintenance on the Mercedes was easily double the Jaguar. Which is crazy since the Jaguar was twice as expensive to purchase.
Your Benz had more maintenance costs than a sports car Jaguar? Lol don’t believe that at all. Especially since you were driving a w204 c class one of the most reliable and cost effective modern Benz
I have just got myself a Jaguar F-pace which I unexpectedly found at a great price from an auction....It was not the car I was actually searching for, because for long I had some reliability worries about the reliability for the brand, however this video is reassuring 😄
My first impression , Just opening and closing its doors did make me feel a high quality experience, the doors being heavy and very sturdy... This jag seemed to be built far better than my preconception told me it would be. So that got me a bit puzzled, and this video quite reassured me I made a far better choice than getting a merc as an example. It also drives like a dream, far more nimble than a car of its size would suggest.... Might I actually have bought a very good car ? Time will tell....😄

The servicing costs you mention for the Jaguar in Canada are nuts. I was able to get 4 years' worth of servicing here in the UK for £800 - around 1300 Canadian dollars - as part of a fixed price plan for my F Type (v6 not the v8 so maybe a bit less expensive in general to maintain). That works out around a quarter of the annual servicing costs they are charging you guys in Canada. Similarly for the Benz, my CLS was around £300 per year (500 Canadian) to get serviced.

If in Canada and usa, price to maintain a mercedes and jaguar are cheap like in uk, then noone will drive Honda and toyota .

I watched a video of hand made air cooled Porsches (can't remember was it 964 or 993 but pretty much the same car) and constructing them cost more to Porsche than what they we're getting of them at the dealers. Doors were like bank vaults and while they had a production line, most of the stuff was pretty much hand constructed. Only when they started producing the Boxter and the Boxter-based 911, they started to make enormous profits. Those cars aren't even NEAR the build quality of the old Porsches. Same for Merc. 123, 124, W140 and R129 were still superbly built. When the "rounded headlight"-models came up, Merc quality plummeted. They say the accountants took the power from the engineers. I have a 2020 Range Rover sport after owning several bmws. I have to say that it does feel more solidly built- and I also noticed and appreciated the old school cooling hose connections (any bmw owner can relate to the ticking time bomb that is a bmw cooling system)

The amount of "strain" on a transmission is relative to the torque capacity for which it was built. The MB trans is a lower spec transmission to service the expected torque from that engine. The ZF 8HP70 in the Jaguar is rated for 516 lb-ft of torque...with an engine with a max torque of 502 in the 550HP trim. That did increase with the 575HP SVR version to 516 ft-lbs...but I think the trans was upgraded to the 8HP95.
That is a beautiful Jaguar. It has a shape very similar to an Aston Martin.

“There’s no replacement for displacement”, but we want more and more power from small engines. Greater power density = less reliability/longevity. Having said that, the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 in my SL63 is notorious for some serious failures. And, wow, that engine is such a tight fit, it looks like they had to assemble the rest of the car around it.
Modern cars are far too complicated for owning past warranty. My 23 year old Jaguar has done 250.000 miles and still no sign whatsoever of old age orher than the usual patina. Of course brakes and suspension is exchanged over time but the engine isn’t worn at all. No oil consumption to speak about. Maybe 1/2 litre over the 10000 miles service interval. Good Service during the lifetime of a car is essential.

Driving a jaguar is like driving an suv with power speed and handling of a sedan, I love how heavy it is, Benz feel way too delicate. I mean modern cars pretty much are free from all flaws and I don’t believe in the old beliefs that jaguars aren’t as reliable, I think the brand new ones have no issues whatsoever, even if they do spending money will fix them nice, moreover the rwd launch is something else, where I am speed rules aren’t as strict as Canada, so basically driving a jag is just a feel that can’t be matched

They dont make or have anything to do with JLR they just own them, still made in the same factory in Gaydon by the same people
Anyone know what years of the F Type to get? I’ve heard to avoid the 2014 and 2015 models…and go for 2016 and up? Also, what about the rusting issue? Are there years to avoid there too? Or just avoid cars from cold climates?

Hi, absolutely they are flawed and it seems the more luxurious and better performing, the more flaws there seem to be. With that said some of the most exciting cars in the world to drive clearly have flaws and yet many continue to buy Ferrari and McLaren.

When I sold my first 3.8 litre E-Type in the late 1970s, it had covered 287,000 miles. You have bought the "Germany quality engineering" myth; nothing has changed; Jaguars have always been mechanically as tough as old boots, although they did suffer minor electrical troubles at one time. I have owned four Mercedes and eight BMWs over the years, all the Mercedes and four of the BMWs let me down and the roadside at least once, one of the Mercedes engines snapped its timing chain destroying the engine at just 41,000 miles.
What strange times we live in where a Jag is as reliable as a MB. ~25 years ago, it would seem ridiculous to even suggest it. P.S. That Jaaaaag F Type R is fizz-inducing.

Well for a weekend toy the Benz is not bad but when you hear the V8...
I have a 2003 S type jag every mechanic I bring it to screws it up can't figure out what's going on and cant even get it to pass inspection.....
The focus on fit and finish was interesting; however, that doesn't necessarily mean that the car with better fit and finish is necessarily more reliable. You can have better fit and finish paired up with worse electronics, a weaker transmission, a underbuilt engine, etc.

56k on my tuned v6 doing 550hp. ZF8HP70....700nm rated tranny stock. No issues. Bosch subsystems. The Jaguar is probably way more reliable now....did the coolant tubes and s/c snout clutch solid piece and all the stuff is good. Replaced the braces and rear steel subframes as Tata supplied poor quality steel at first...new stuff is fine.
Car is set to go to 200k or more easilly. So, likely to keep it 30 more years at least. I'll be that guy driving the e type dailly.... :)
That Jag is sexy. I prefer my newly purchased 2022 mustang gt........but its not because i dont like or appeeciate the jag. Its one of those if i can only have 1......i pick that. They make alot of them, and a ton of aftermarket support.
I wish that Range Rover and Jaguar would fix their reliability problem same with Audi and BMW. For the sky high prices, they warrant reliable design like Honda and Toyota.

My XKR feels very solid and composed, definitely better built than the Jags from the 80's and early 90's. It's almost 10 years old and has no creaks or rattles, and it's given me 0 fuss (yet) in the time I've had it. That said, even though it definitely feels solid enough to daily drive, I'm glad i don't have to with the maintenance cost that might incur. I see luxury cars like these as 2nd or 3rd cars that are fun to drive a couple days a week but not something I'd necessarily want to have to rely on everyday.

As a Jaguar XF owner I can say I spend more money in one year on this car than any other car cost $1200 a year this includes alternator failure O-ring replaced and oil change I need to change rear brake and rotor$700 includes labor if u buy your own parts u will come out alot cheaper my XF is a fun car to drive I would not recommend it being a daily
driver car specially XF and R Type
As a Jaguar XF owner for four years I consider myself lucky having had only two issues: EGR valve needed cleaning, one rear parking sensor needed replacement.
I just sold my XF they are at the bottom compared to XK XJ and F Types

@@duddaman254118 yes I bought my 2009 jaguar xf supercharged for 6400 $ with 110,000 miles I put in over 6k into it since I bought it in 2021!! Waterpump and all them weak coolant pipes and labor..one of the cylinders had low compression in it..I just sold it for 3200 today.. its was almost flawless beige inside black paint only put 622 miles on it ...I will be saving for a XK now..way better build...Ford sold the company same year they put out the XF they where not invested in that car

You’re right. Out of warranty, these vehicles are a big expense. People that can’t afford these used OOW vehicles are in for a big surprise. I see too many cars left on the roadside as insurance fraud. We all end up paying for bad decisions from unscrupulous buyers. Now you know why your insurance premiums are so high.

With enough money you can make them last forever. I have worked with industrial equipment that is 100 years old and there is no plan to replace that equipment with something made more recently.

Purchased a pre-owned F-Type two years ago and have had zero issues with it. Would take the Jaguar over mediocre Mercedes and bland BMW any day.
My 2008 6 Series coupe (E63, LCI) is far from bland and I love it. But I also love my 2013 XF sedan/saloon.
Listening to those engines is OK but the 5.7 V8 in my Tundra sounds much better and when under throttle, the snarl of a NA V8 is hard to beat. I have owned several different brands and no auto make does it better than Toyota for switch gear. Toyota switch gear feels Swiss made. I remember the Ford Taurus...the switch gear was just pure crap.
For Mercedes I can only say one thing three times, shame, shame, shame.
It sounds like what you’re trying to say is that I should study hard so I can open up my own corporation get one of these cars as a lease so I can use it as a tax write off and never have a lease lasting for more than three years, because these are literally less reliable than a 35 year old Toyota

There's just no way to tell the reliability of recent cars at all. They wear over time, and by the time they do wear and problems occur and recur, people would've been over those vehicles already to even search and see it on TH-cam. So this Jaguar /Mercedes in ten years when we could actually rate their reliability, people who watch TH-cam wouldn't care to watch it, and thus there wouldn't be such video... People watch video to find out about modern new cars and debate which of the new cars are more reliable... Much like this one...

If you want luxury AND reliability, then you should buy Lincoln. Mercedes and Jaguar are also not bad, but one step below.
Even now the turbo charged Mercedes can drive 350000 miles . I know many !!!!
What type of engines?
Both the Jaguar and Benz are beautiful to look and drive, but they don't last. The Jaguar might last 1.5 years and the Benz 2 years. German cars are overengineered and junk and UK just can't build cars. These cars are just status symbols, but most people just finance them, so people, you aren't fooling anyone. Great videos.

@@dlj1285 Well that's your opinion. Jag, Rover and so on all have issues early on. They depreciate more than others for a reason. Benz was a good car many many years ago, now they are cheaply made and over engineered. I am not here to offend anyone, but it is a fact that UK and German cars to stand up to Japanese cars. Nobody in their right mind with actual knowledge of the industry would dispute this. I own 2 Toyotas. They are incredible cars. That’s not what I was calling you out on. The way you chose to express your “opinion” was just a bit over the top and greatly exaggerated. Come on now, hardly a fair statement to say 1.5 years. I was just watching a video on the LC500 from Lexus, as I have interest in potentially purchasing one. People were going on about a whole bunch of problems. Servos in the air conditioning unit failing, fuel pump recall, squeaks and rattles all over the place, something about glass delaminating, condensation inside brake lights. Truthfully, this surprised me a bit, but it just goes to show you problems are occurring with even the most reliable. I literally have had nothing go wrong with my Toyotas so this was surprising. I am aware that Merc have fallen a bit. I’m also aware that Jag (not LR) have improved in recent years. I know this through first hand accounts of people I know who have owned or own them (XE, F-type). Are they Japanese quality? Nope.
@@dlj1285 When I wrote Jag 1.5 years and Benz 2 years, I was referring to the years that you might be seeing issues, not that they only last that long. I guess I should have been more specific. Like I said, Jag and Benz are great looking /driving cars and nice cars to own if you are ok with the reliability issues. I have owned American cars in my teenager years (never again), one German car (never again) and Japanese (only buy). I have been working on cars since a teenager (not a mechanic) and rebuilding dirt bikes, so I have quite a bit of experience. My opinion is that German and UK brands are just status symbols and that doesn't mean much these days if you drive one as majority of them are leased or financed and you don't buy one for reliability.
@@dominicd2694 Fair enough man. I respect the views of others. I guess I misinterpreted your comments to some degree. Now that you've added a bit of color I understand you a bit more. I would just suggest another possibility for you to consider. I have been lusting after an F-type from the moment I saw one. I have a genuine interest in the car. Not because the car may or may not be some sort of status symbol. I genuinely love the car. I literally could care less what anyone else thinks about the car, or any "status" around such a car (perceived or otherwise). If I was worried about status I would go for a Porsche 911 turbo, or something of that variety. What others think is quite irrelevant to me at this point in my life. Everyone matures eventually and realizes that worrying about what other people think is a complete waste of time. For true happiness you need to do things because it works for you. Also (again, not that it matters), even to lease or purchase on credit cars like these, one does need to have some level of success in their life (at least here in NA, Canada in particular). This is particularly true if one has a family, property or properties, and hopes to be able to retire some day. You make it sound like it is so easy to just go out and buy something like this. My wife and I have done alright for ourselves in life, always focusing on building wealth instead of making irresponsible purchases (expensive vehicles or otherwise). We make decent coin in terms of household income (more than I ever dreamed possible), but I certainly don't view such a car as an "easy" thing to achieve. Certainly not if one is doing it responsibly, and with actual wealth behind the car. I know people who have gone out and bought cars like these with nothing else to their name. That it pure lunacy if you ask me, but to each their own. It has taken me almost 50 years on this earth to feel like I've done enough financially to be able to responsibly go out and waste this kind of money on a toy. We all know from a dollars and cents perspective cars are a complete waste of money. Period. Fortunately life is not just about money. It's my time ;-) In any case, good talking to ya.
