  • What is faster a JDM car, or a European car? The battle of "who is the fastest" is a long debated one. So ‪@GearsandGasoline‬ challenged me to a $5000 drag race build! We are building the fastest VW we can for $5000. Both cars will run 1/4 race and the fastest 1/4 wins! This is part 1 of a 4 part series to see who can build the fastest car for $5000!
Thanks to ‪@advanceautoparts‬ for being an amazing partner in this Drag Race Series #advancefleet #humblemechanic #jdm #vw

I installed a Frankenturbo kit to replace my blown mk4 GLI stock turbo. It's spools slow, the compressor wheel looks much stronger but that fatty needs a turbo for its turbo. If my turbo wasn't cracked and I was turning the car into a drag racer, I'd upgrade the watergate and DV on the stock turbo. Put the saved money into stiffening the suspension and sways up. Doesn't matter how much hp and torque you have if the tires are spinning and hopping.

If this had been a couple of years ago, clapped-out, rusted-out (pretty much all '02's and many '03's) C32 AMGs could be had for around $3k. BPU (pulley, tune, heat exchanger upgrade) makes them solid high-12s cars. And the engine and trans in them are bulletproof. No air/hydro suspension, either. Like every other car though, prices have ballooned on them now, assuming you can even find one for sale.

They were pretty uncommon to being with. I personally would look at a C230 Kompressor with the M111 engine, turbo manifold & big turbo, injectors, tune, shift kit in transmission, tires, send it. Similarly could be done with a C280 with the M104.

I have an old GT2860RS (aka Disco Potato) turbo from a first gen APR Stage 3 kit that I will let go for $300. Turbo was pushing 23-25lbs of boost without issue before it was removed. Only reason I took it off is because I upgraded to the newer GTX2867R. The problem is that you will need a manifold adapter and possibly different oil and coolant lines. Might be best to continue to pursue the used K04 solution...

Awesome. I was thinking it would have been 1 of the 3 cars I was think.
1: MK5 series VW (though I thought it'd be GTI)
2: Audi TT Quattro. AWD, cheap to build, really light.
3: Audi A3 Quattro, though in hind sight you might be able to talk someone down to 5 or 4K, but it wouldn't leave you with much room to mod.

I was hoping you would've gone with a MK1 or MK2 chassis and an engine swap, but it'll be interesting to see what you can do with the MK5. A MK1 or MK2 would be almost half the weight, but then you need a donor car for the engine, transmission, harness, etc. So I understand why you went with the MK5, but a MK1 or MK2 would definitely be faster in the end (but more work).

G&G is going for the JDM is having the problem of pre molested cars and Humble mechanic is going for euro and is having the issue of abused and broken car. I really like this series because it looks like it will show both sides of the coin. I have a small mechanic background and I would do the same as Humble. This is interesting because I think people get the idea that you can just buy a car slap turbo on it and go full send down the track. And technically you can but you can seriously hurt the car and yourself. It really is nice to see two kinds of build series in one multichannel series. my money is on Jetta ATM because I have seen them do well as long as they can get rev limiter set up and build boost they Will be fine but the civic is frightening.
