I always saw this car as the prototype to prove that you can get good gas mileage and still have fun. and a lot of other better hybrids are coming out now that are electric motor assisted, but this one was a first in 2010/2011. The Cr-Z is finally getting some love, so hopefully that means the aftermarket will pick back up a bit.
I have a 2016 CR-Z stock and I love it. They gave it some extra horse power and stiffened up the rear end as well as a few other bells and whistles for the final year of production. I plan on driving it until Honda makes a new sports car. From how it's looking, that will be a ways off.
I love my crz it’s absolutely beautiful on the interior and exterior. I have a manual and its always a blast to drive!! Just wish it had a little more power stock but I love it and you don’t see too many on the road.
One thing to mention about this car is that it wasn't tuned to get the best fuel economy possible. It was tuned to be able to do so at high speeds. For example, I get 38 miles per gallon when I'm cruising at 70 on the freeway with cruise control, but I get 35mpg at 85mph. Even the Prius doesn't get that at 85mph... The mpg drops off like a rock
I can confirm, on multiple occasions, that I've gotten well over 40 mpg highway. Close to 50mpg once. I find the computer to be very accurate to the standard mpg equation.
@@lizardboy_kev in a 2013 I’m getting 40mpg average and rising, probably a 30/70 split for city/highway. When I drive I’m comfortably under 3k rpm on the stock engine with an aftermarket exhaust and an added header, so pretty much stock. Driving in normal mode for city, eco for highway. All eco does is lengthen out your RPMS when your getting on the gas, so for me it’s easier to manage my gas.

I always thought the hybrid actually made a lot of sense, but executed wrong. I would LOVE a high revving NA VTEC motor with an electric motor for torque fill at the lower revs. Those high revving engines are amazing when you're revving them, but around town can often be a little gutless - even in the S2000. I really felt like a small hybrid motor like in this, but if the 1.5L actually revved high could've been great. Or heck, a hybrid K20 with a manual!
To your point about hybrid and sports car not fitting in the same equation, the Porsche 918, BMW i8, and the new NSX are all hybrid sports cars. Granted, maybe only the first one will go down in history as anything of note, but they do exist and are apparently pretty cool. The CR-Z just didn't quite do hybrid OR sports well enough from the factory, but I find it to be a happy middle ground. If they had used the tech from the 4 wheel electric Pikes Peak car to make an SH-AWD version with rear electric motors, that would've been sick.
I own a 2010 honda insight, I really like the practicality and reliability. Also the fact of having a back row. Such a great handling car, just slow. My fantasy would be a k swap plus long travel suspension to build a crz rally car. This thing us so low... Scrapes on everything
Unfortunately I think this is really unlikely. The IMA is usually something they design into the block. I don’t think any K-series ever had IMA so it seems unlikely to work. That being said - I have seen some CRAZY shit from the community so I guess you never know.

The K20 has a engine mount bolt that goes into the head. Two go in the block, and 1 in the head. I don't know if that causes problems, but the CR-V has over heating problems. It might be from this engine mount.

Imo, it would of sold better if it had a regular auto tranny instead of the CVT. When I was looking for a new automatic compact car back then, the CRZ was on my radar... but as soon as I heard that the auto came with a CVT tranny, I said nope.
I've never read anywhere about this car being 'hated'. Quite the opposite. There aren't many of them around, they do have a following and tend to be sought after and appreciated by those that own them. Many are manual which is unusual and appreciated by enthusiastic drivers. It's just a fact that although Honda's IMA system is effective basically Toyota's hybrid synergy drive stole the show. Do post the link to people 'hating' this car.
It’s not a sports car, not even close. I owned one and it was pathetically slow. But it did have some redeeming features, the interior was just incredible, the tech at the time was top notch and I personally loved the styling. But it’s never a sports car.
I think you mean "successor" not "predecessor." A predecessor comes before. A successor comes after. In 2011 Honda came out with a successor to the legendary CRX.
They marketed it well. It was made for 6 years. There just wasn’t a market for sport compact hybrids. You’ll have a really hard time convincing enthusiasts that a hybrid can be a cool sports car. It was the terrible market segmentation that killed sales. Honda found a hole in the market and tried to fill it, unfortunately there was a hole in that market for a reason.
@@adobomoto They marketed it none. There were a few ads the first year or two, then nothing. It disappeared from all Honda ads. @@taperry326 😂 and I didn’t even need google to disprove your wild ass claim 😂😂😂 “marketed it none” bwahahahaha, anyone ever believe you when you say that?
The logic behind it was so ass. 1.5 liter + electric motor for 120 hp was not all that great mated with an optionally 6 spd trany that has ass gear ratio. I have not driven the auto version of it but I will speak on the behalf of the manual version that as a hybrid, the 6 spd transmission has small gears(not practical and idle to saving gas). Main freeway where I live is a 65 mph zone. Most people go 70 mph. The car revs extremely high in my opinion. At 60 mph, it's already at 2.5k pm. At 70 mph, it's very close to 3k rpm(miss my stage 2 MK7 that unfortunately hit a deer). Engine working harder then it needs to be for a hybrid. I get that the small gearing maybe is to help with accceleration??? But still, for an everyday car it's a thumbs down for me. I'm sure that is why the sale of this car was ass. The components that came together to make the CRZ was ass. Whoever and whatever team that came together to colab on this CRZ need to be fired. Great car, bad functionality in retrospect, bad sales!!! If your intentions are to mess with it like this video, then the CRZ is a great car! Where I live, no shop will do the work! Stock CRZ...not a good car!
Nice swap, but it's a different car to be re-immatriculate. It's like talking about Mini One R50 and then swap motor with a R53 (even more in real)... ok it's faster ok

man...you ever heard of a period? bwahahaha, j/p. that's awesome though. if you're in the area, I'd like to check out your ej1!
@@adobomoto was using voice to text man that's why there was no periods Or anything 😂 but yeah my 95 EJ1 is my built track car that I've been building over the last 7 years my 04 V6 6-speed Accord coupe with all the hfp options the Honda factory performance options front lip rear lip side skirts the bigger Wheels bigger brakes all leather seats heated seats etc with bolt ons is my daily and then I got the Civic for a track car but I'd like to get a CRZ for a daily I'd love to find me a 2016 model in that beautiful blue they come in that's almost like SI blue where you from though what part of Washington State?
I'd love to know if you could fit the 1.5t from the 2020 civic si into a CR-Z. It would be a bit faster and more nimble than the si and get better than 42mpg that I get now commuting my si
I love my 2011. The IMA lets me short shift and lug it up hills in top. I'm doing 800km on a tank. If I ever come across a wrecked SI I'm definitely doing the swap. Such a great handling car, just slow. My fantasy would be a k swap plus long travel suspension to build a crz rally car. This thing us so low... Scrapes on everything
I wonder if it would be possible to swap in the K20 but also keep the hybrid powertrain so you could have fun but also get good gas mileage.
That’s be really interesting!
Unfortunately I think this is really unlikely. The IMA is usually something they design into the block. I don’t think any K-series ever had IMA so it seems unlikely to work. That being said - I have seen some CRAZY shit from the community so I guess you never know.
I had the K20 200 Hp in my Acura Rsx Type S, great engine but it had no bottom end despite vtec. I prefer the huge bottom end torque of my MT hybrid Crz, and probably will never go back an IC only engine. Maybe the lighter CrZ uses the K20 better than the Rsx, but I don't miss the 3,500 rpm for maximum pull off.
K24 solves that
What was your total cost for this change? Thank you! I ask because I'm curious what other car you could have bought.
Love this car, but when climbing steep grades with a depleted battery pack with the IMA MT, it absolutely sucks.
There's a video where the creator of the cr-z explained that in Japan they wanted a fun commuter, easy to park . Don't get the hate for the car
I love my car, it is a stick as well. Best car ever! I put a whole couch in the back of my CRV and it is great on gas. I was going to buy a new car for my birthday but I don't want to give this one up!
Mine just turned 100k and still love it, going to get new shocks for it.
Not super fast but very fun car n very unique which I like
Its time is coming. K-series and CRZ are meant to be and a turbo on that is just cherry on cake💯Who ever wants to K-swap and turbo it check my channel. i have whole 18 part K-swap guide, from engine to a working reverse cam. Every detail is covered
Ako lang ba pinoy dito? Ahah. Anyways nice crz. Love the kswap
May mnga mongoloid dito tol…tayong dalawa 😂😂
Hahaha natawa ako dami nilang good comment 😆😅 hay CR Z '12
Need to lower the background brother
Cool review
I'm in Olalla, WA. I'd love to see the car. Followed it when LHT Performance K-swapped it. I have a 2016 CR-Z EX-L 6MT Navi and I'm in the process of k-swapping in a 8th gen 2011 Civic Si K20Z3 6MT LSD with a 4-2-1 header. Hasport mounts, Insane Axles axles. I know you are somewhere here in Washington. Look me up.
I'd like to see your build vids
Hey what about more lifted an a rally style suspension an wheels i think that will be a whole lot of fun with the K in it
damnnn...LHT performance made that...so cool man
Yeah! Nice guys. John responded to all my questions about the car.
Do You happen to know what the fuel efficiency is? I have a chance to buy a K20 swap here in South Carolina.
I always liked this car, but since I drive an FR-S and find that too slow: this car just never happened
They are gorgeous in my opinion
I live in Florida and would love for them to do my k20 swap any tips or prices?
Could you give a whole mod list of your car? I have a white MT CR-Z and I was planning on trying to do something similar within a year or so to mine. Thanks!
I have a full walk around video coming!
@@adobomoto Please include the exhaust setup you used if you could. I think it sounds good and not overbearing.I hear mostly engine and vtec which is more desirable in my opinion for that engine. I love what you did with the car overall. I like that it has a mostly "stock" look, but it's definitely not stock. It most definitely should have come that way from the factory. Yeah, looking forward to the walk around!
What axles and harness were used? I can find mounts but nothing else
The K20 has a engine mount bolt that goes into the head. Two go in the block, and 1 in the head. I don't know if that causes problems, but the CR-V has over heating problems. It might be from this engine mount.
Question do you know how to disable the auto stop in the car my car randomly does the auto stopping and idk how to turn it off
Turn on the defroster button it won't keep it on
Did you get rid of the RS and buy this car?
Still have the RS
The fn2 type r is a great type r, it's better than the ep3 and I've driven both. The fn2 is so much tightrr and better in the corners, it's a world class above the ep3 and shouldn't get the hate it's getting. People are to specs sheet focused
Imo, it would of sold better if it had a regular auto tranny instead of the CVT. When I was looking for a new automatic compact car back then, the CRZ was on my radar... but as soon as I heard that the auto came with a CVT tranny, I said nope.
I am averaging 41.3 mpg in my 2016 Cr-z
I've never read anywhere about this car being 'hated'. Quite the opposite. There aren't many of them around, they do have a following and tend to be sought after and appreciated by those that own them. Many are manual which is unusual and appreciated by enthusiastic drivers. It's just a fact that although Honda's IMA system is effective basically Toyota's hybrid synergy drive stole the show. Do post the link to people 'hating' this car.
You’re talking then vs now. They didn’t sell well, because no one wanted a hybrid crx
Now people who own them want them because they’re unique
It’s not a sports car, not even close. I owned one and it was pathetically slow. But it did have some redeeming features, the interior was just incredible, the tech at the time was top notch and I personally loved the styling. But it’s never a sports car.
Its a cool looking car but a ep3 hatch would be a easier route and less expensive
Stupid question, can we even KSwap in California?
Just got mine!
i love the look of the crz
whats kswap?
You're bugging.
I think you mean "successor" not "predecessor." A predecessor comes before. A successor comes after. In 2011 Honda came out with a successor to the legendary CRX.
Maybe one day my boosted k swap Crz will be done. One day
I think I’m gonna boost mine next
yessurrr
That only thing wrong with the CR-Z was the complete lack of marketing.
You know those two page magazine spreads that show the current year's lineup? Never had the CR-Z in it. I've had a 2010, and now a 2016. My wife also has a 2011, and now drives a 2015. Made us quite aware of how nobody knew, or knows what they are. Why? BECAUSE ZERO FUCKING MARKETING EINSTEIN.
@@taperry326 lmao. you're confusing under marketed in one area to NO marketing. and you're also confusing US to worldwide. it's a brand new car from one of the biggest manufacturers in the WORLD. You'll have to excuse me if you think I'm gonna believe your blanket statement. YOU'RE WRONG BUDDY
@@adobomoto mmkay Mr Mackey, what ever you say. Since you have such clairvoyant insight into what global exposure I have, you must be right. Sleep well with your conquering victory!
@@taperry326 😂 and I didn’t even need google to disprove your wild ass claim 😂😂😂 “marketed it none” bwahahahaha, anyone ever believe you when you say that?
Probably weights less now than stock.
Sould of came with 2 different motors.. a SI version and a hybrid version
I want to do this swap
un-proper downshifts kill my vibe
Improper grammar kills mine
Wish they would show how many 👎 dislikes. I love this car wish they still made them
Maybe actually watch the video because I talk about how much I also LOVE this car lmao
Now the price of one went up😒
Not anymore. That goes to the "New" Integra.
Bwahaha true
MPG post-swap!?!?
25mpg
bro id be scared to drive crz with 200 hp engine, the car feels to fragile and light for that amount of power lmao
Yee
Stop it. It’s vee. As in vee tec! 😂
@@adobomoto 😆 this guy
L15b be nice
Why didn't Honda fit a 1.5 Lean Burn Twin Vtec like Later Del sol/Fiero which were 128bhp, single Vtec-E were 114bhp in late 90s Civics then add Hybrid also
