I would recommend aligning the bed on leveling jacks before any scraping is done. Sitting on 4 x 4's could twist the bed and give you false readings. Did you align the bed on the grinder or have it setting on 4 x 4's? I always align the bed before I scrape anything.
Hi there! This is a venerable machine! I have exactly the same machine and I do appreciate your points of vew about the rebulding; btw, my lathe doesn't justify rebuild now, but maybe some day
In the past when I ran lathes with gap the previous operators wouldn't take the time to properly clean the gap and over it messes up the lathe. The 2 lathes I bought has no gap problem solved!

Yes I agree as most of the time the stuff inside it is the cost of the gap so it has to be cleaned.
